Album Review | Rick Ross – Mastermind

This album came out in March of last year, so i’m almost a full year late on this one. Not really expecting much from this album. For those wondering, I won’t be reviewing his latest project, Hood Billionaire.

Hood Billionaire

Why? Because I listened to it before I started doing album reviews, and I like them to be my first reactions. I will tell you that Hood Billionaire was fucking awful tho. I liked four out of sixteen songs. It felt incredibly rushed & lazy. So, yeah I’m not expecting much from Mastermind.

Track 1: Intro

Pointless intro. I guess it’s supposed to make this sound more professional and/or cinematic, but it’s really just a waste of time. Not gonna give this a score.

Track 2: Rich Is Gangsta (Prod. Black Metaphor)

Rich Is Gangsta? Rick Ross is fucking stupid. This beat isn’t bad. Just not really that interesting. Rick Ross is saying a bunch of dumb shit about bein’ rich and bein’ a gangsta, even though he’s only one of those things (I can’t really say shit about that since I’m callin’ myself OG Nick Marsh and I go to the whitest school in the country, but it’s still fucked up). It’s not a terrible track, but it’s pretty generic as far Rick Ross songs go. 3/5

Track 3: Drug Dealers Dream (Prod. J. Manifest)

I just can’t take this fake ass wannabe gangsta ass nigga seriously. How is a former police officer that raps about sellin’ crack one of the most famous people in hip hop? This shit is ridiculous. The beat to this song is dope tho… I guess if you can somehow forget about his past, this is a pretty dope trap song. It’s not that bad. He’s fake af, but he knows how to make gangsta trap music. 4/5

Track 4: Shots Fired

This is a skit about when Rick Ross almost got clapped. It has like the news reports about when he got shot at in the car and everything and as I’m listening to this I’m just thinkin’ WHO THE FUCK GIVES A MUDDA FUCK! Seriously, who the fuck does he think he’s fooling? I know he actually got shot at, but it’s not like someone’s gonna hear this shit and say “Oh damn, this nigga put the news report about his fat ass gettin’ shot at in the album man! This nigga is real! This nigga is hard! Rick Ross is a real gangsta, man!” Nah foh nigga.

Track 5: Nobody Feat. French Montana (Prod. Puff Daddy)

This is basically just a cover of You’re Nobody by Biggie with a terrible hook from the worst rapper ever (French Montana), and wack bars from Rick Ross. I have no idea why anybody would listen to this instead of the original. French Montana just ruins everything he’s on. I mean the original hook wasn’t all that good either, but damn if you have a chance to improve it, why would you throw French Montana of all people on there. This shit is bad. The beat still holds up, but I can’t really give Rick Ross credit for liking a Biggie track. 2/5

Track 6: The Devil Is A Lie Feat. JAY-Z (Prod. Major Seven & K.E On The Track)

The Devil Is A Lie

Ah shit, this beat is fuckin’ crazy. This shit is hard af. When the beat drops I’m just like “Eeeeeeuuuuuuuuugggggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!” Ya know? Rick Ross had a decent verse. The hook isn’t bad. JAY-Z did his thing. Still not a big fan of him, but he wasn’t bad on this song. His flow was pretty nice. I fuck with this song. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 7: Mafia Music III Feat. Sizzla & Mavado (Prod. Bink!)

Oh God, I’m so fuckin’ tired of reggae horns… I hear reggae horns every fuckin’ day. It just sounds so cheap to me. This song made me unhappy in literally one second. It starts off with a reggae horn and nothing else, so as soon as it started I had to hit pause. I’m one second in and I already hate it. Okay I’m being way too harsh over a fucking reggae horn, but damn you don’t understand how unpleasant that sound is for me. Oh God, I guess I’m about to listen to a dancehall inspired Rick Ross song. This is gonna suck ass. The beat isn’t that bad. Rick Ross gotta lazy ass flow. No surprise there. I guess since it’s a dancehall song he intentionally made it sound cheap, and like it wasn’t mastered properly. He just called Wale a genius. If he’s so smart, why couldn’t he teach you how to make a good song? This is bad. No. Mavado didn’t do shit for me. I’m not really a huge dancehall fan, mostly because my dad is always blasting it on his fuckin’ pocket speaker and carrying it around the fucking house. The most exercise he ever gets is when he’s walking around with that speaker. I don’t even know why he does that. It’s like he just walks up and down the stairs with the obnoxious ass dancehall music blastin’ just to annoy me. Sorry, I don’t know why I told you that. Got a little too close to home. Anyway this song isn’t good. 2/5

Track 8: War Ready Feat. Jeezy & Tracy T (Prod. Mike WiLL Made It & A+)

War Ready

I still can’t get over how bad that Mike WiLL Made It tape was. Hopefully this beat is listenable. Okay this beat is dope af. Rick Ross spit a Rick Ross verse. This hook… Idk. Nigga sound like Quavo. Sound like Young Thug witta Migos flow. Wtf is this shit? Damn. Okay Jeezy ’bout to spit somethin’, but damn that hook is… bad. Wtf… JEEZY WENT THE FUCK OFF! Seriously, that’s the best verse I’ve ever heard from Jeezy. Why doesn’t he spit like that more often? Damn, I mean his album wasn’t bad, but he definitely didn’t ever go that hard on it. It might be because he wanted to murk Rozay on his own shit because they had beef, but still he should rap like that more often. I can get over that hook, this shit is dope af. 5/5

Track 9: What A Shame Feat. French Montana (Prod. Reefa)

This beat is cool I guess. For once French Montana didn’t ruin the song. The hook sounds like a stupid version of Luchini by Camp Lo. Hopefully he didn’t give Montana a verse. This song isn’t very good. It’s not that bad tho. It’s a Rick Ross song. It doesn’t have the generic trap beat tho. Its not a bad track, just nothin’ special. 3/5

Track 10: Supreme (Prod. Scott Storch)

This beat is alright. If you’re gonna listen to this song listen to the remix. Idk why anyone would listen to the original over the remix. The original gets old pretty fast, but the features keep the remix interesting. Not really feelin’ the hook. It’s not terrible tho. This version gets a 3/5, but the remix gets a 4/5.

Track 11: BLK & WHT (Prod. D-Rich)

Oh fuck, this hook is terrible. No, this shit is awful. Average flow from Ross. Nah. Nah this is wack af. 1/5

Track 12: Dope Bitch Skit

Another pointless interlude.

Track 13: In Vein Feat. The Weeknd (Prod. The Weeknd & DaHeala)

I like The Weeknd, but I’m not really feelin’ this intro. The hook is cool I guess. I feel like The Weeknd should be more famous. Ah shit, it just got even more intense. Okay, I’m halfway through the song and there’s no sign of Rozay. This beat is pretty dope. Oh never mind he just started rappin’. At least he’s actually switchin’ his flow up. It kinda sounds like he’s havin’ trouble catchin the beat tho… It’s not a bad track. Just not for me. 3/5

Track 14: Sanctified Feat. Big Sean & Kanye West (Prod. Kanye West, DJ Mustard & Mike Dean)

This beat is dope af. Kanye killed it. “people sayin’ ‘ye we need another yeezus” I seriously doubt that. His verse was still great tho. This Betty Wright sample isn’t bad. Big Sean didn’t need to be on this track. Kanye or Ross coulda did the hook. I’m glad Big Sean didn’t get a verse. This beat is dope af. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 15: Walkin’ On Air Feat. Meek Mill (Prod. D-Rich)

This beat is dope af. The horns in the background are great, but sometimes they don’t really blend well with the rest of the track. He should’ve got another feature for this song. It would’ve sounded a lot more epic. I could see Wale or Rockie Fresh on this beat. Meek Mill did his thing. His verse was real short. This isn’t bad. I fuck with this. He definitely shoulda had another feature. It gets a little boring after a while. The song is way too long. 3/5

Track 16: Thug Cry Feat. Lil Wayne (Prod. J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League)

Thug Cry

Thug Cry is a dumb ass title for a song. Okay, he’s basically doing what he did with that Biggie track except it’s 93 ‘Til Infinity by Souls Of Mischief this time. The sample he used for the hook is dope af. Rick Ross did his thing. Weezy’s flow was actually pretty dope on this one. He wasn’t really sayin’ shit but I liked his verse anyway. He sounded like he was actually trying for once. He sounded sober. It wasn’t that good tho. I mean it was great compared to the shit he been puttin’ out recently, but that ain’t really sayin’ much. “Sometimes I ask myself… Do thugs cry?” Shut the fuck up Rick Ross. That’s the dumbest shit I heard all year. I fuck with this song tho. 4/5

Track 17: Blessing In Disguise Feat. Scarface & Z-Ro (Prod. Streetrunner, Vinny Venditto & DJ Khaled)

This beat isn’t bad. Scarface did his thing. The hook from Z-ro is dope af. Rick Ross wasn’t that bad actually. Scarface definitely did way better than him tho. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 18: Paradise Lost (Prod. Ben Billions, Beats & Messy)

This beat is smooth af. This is dope. Rick Ross still ain’t sayin shit, but I fuck with this. The hook could be better but it isn’t bad. 4/5

Track 19: You Know I Got It (Reprise) (Prod. Boi-1da, Vinylz, Timbaland & J-Roc)

This is just FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt without JAY-Z. He added some verses, but idk why you would wanna listen to this one instead of the original. The original wasn’t even that good. Not feelin’ this. 2/5

Final Thoughts:

That was actually a lot better than I thought it would be. But Rick Ross is definitely the worst part of this album. I was pleasantly surprised that he didn’t just spit over a bunch of generic trap beats, but he’s still just rapping about the same shit that he’s been rapping about. Rick Ross has got to be one of the most generic rappers in hip hop. This was a great album if all you care about is the production, but the lyrics are just fucking ridiculous, so for me it’s just alright. The features were definitely the best parts of the album. Except French Montana. He don’t need to be on here. This is definitely better than Hood Billionaire. That shit was fucking terrible.
