Album Review | Statik Selektah – What Goes Around

Statik Selektah is a producer who started in the early 2000s. He was the DJ on The Beat 102.7 from Grand Theft Auto 4. I’ve never listened to a Statik Selektah album. I think it’s gonna be a bunch of 90’s style beats with really dope rappers. He handled almost all of the production on B4.DA.$$. I’m looking at the tracklist right now and I can’t call any of these rappers wack. I either think they’re really good, or I haven’t heard of them. The album has features from Talib Kweli, Black Thought & Pharoahe Monche. This is gonna be dope. It came out back in August of 2014, but I never got a chance to listen to it. I’m not gonna include producer credits because Statik Selektah produced everything. I’m so tired. I’m gonna take a nap. Oh shit I just woke up, but I fell asleep with my contacts in. My eyes are watering like a bitch. This shit burns my nigga.

Track 1: What Goes Around (Lil Fame Feat. Ea$y Money)

I don’t know who Lil Fame or Ea$y Money are. This beat is dope af. Makes me think of New York City at night. Idk why. OH I remember now Lil Fame is one of the guys from M.O.P. This shit is dope af. I love this beat. Lil Fame is doin’ his thing. “Go dick down ya bitch to where her neck be / and explode like mentos in a pepsi.” This nigga crazy. Goddamn this beat is really dope af. Ea$y Money is dope too. Both these niggas went in. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 2: Carry On (Joey Bada$$ Feat. Freddie Gibbs)

Carry On

This beat is smooth af. It’s real jazzy. Joey went in. Damn Gangsta Gibbs went the fuck in. His flow is dope af on this track. He fuckin’ killed that shit. I fuck with this. This is dope af. Damn wtf people in the comments sayin’ Gibbs ruined the track. The fuck were they listenin’ to? We must not have heard the same track because Gibbs fuckin’ spazzed on this shit. 5/5

Track 3: The Thrill Is Back (Styles P Feat. Talib Kweli)

Oh, hell yeah, this shit finna be dope af. Styles P & Talib Kweil? It’s over my nigga. Nah, but seriously this song will probably be amazing. This beat is smooth af. This is apparently a follow-up to The Thrill Is Gone, but I never heard that song. I’ll listen to it some other time. The hook is dope.  Styles P did his thing. Talib Kweli’s verse was dope. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 4: The Imperial (Action Bronson Feat. Royce Da 5’9″ & Black Thought)

The Imperial

Goddamn, this album is full of nothing but dream collaborations. This beat is dope af. Seriously, this beat is fuckin’ crazy. As you all know (unless you’re new around here) I’ve never been a huge fan of Action Bronson, but his verse was pretty dope. I actually think I’m starting to get into his music. I’ll definitely be reviewing Mr. Wonderful. But yeah, his verse here wasn’t bad. Royce killed it. WTF… BLACK THOUGHT JUST WENT THE FUCK OFF… WHAT THE FUCK! WHAT THE FUCK HE FUCKIN’ KILLED THAT SHIT! HE JUST KEPT GOIN’ AND EVERY LINE WAS BETTER THAN THE LAST! I could put an excerpt in here, but I wouldn’t even know which lines to highlight… That shit was fuckin’ crazy… Goddamn. Y’all need to hear this song. Just listen to it. I definitely fuck with this. This shit is dope af. Black Thought. Damn. 5/5

Track 5: All The Way (Pimp Hop) (Snoop Dogg Feat. CharlieRED, Wais P & Ransom)

Idk who CharlieRED is, but the hook wasn’t bad. If you listened to that Paperwork album by T.I., CharlieRED kinda sounds like Watch The Duck. Kinda. Snoop Dogg did his thing, but this isn’t really my kinda song… Some of these lines are a little too graphic. “Go down, boo, go ahead & kiss it / I’m about to explode don’t you miss it / A whole mouthful, don’t be scared & don’t be bashful.” Yeah. The beat is dope. Wais P verse was cool. Didn’t think Ransom would fit well into this song after hearing that Snoop Dogg verse, but nobody else on this song got as… uh… specific? Yeah. Nobody else on this song got as specific as Snoop Dogg did. Ransom killed it. Ransom is actually dope af. You should listen to Pain & Glory: The Album. It was one of my favorite albums from last year. This song wasn’t bad, but that Snoop Dogg verse was kinda… It was… It was just too much. I still fuck with this song tho. 4/5

Track 6: Back For You (Dilated Peoples)

I’ve never listened to a Dilated Peoples album, but I will be reviewing their LP Directors Of Photography one day. Not exactly sure when that’ll be… Anyway, this beat is dope af. The hook is dope af. Rakaa did his thing. Evidence verse was dope. Goddamn, them scratches at the end of the song are fuckin’ dope. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 7: Alarm Clock (Ab-Soul Feat. Jon Connor & Logic)

This beat is smooth af. Ab-Soul killed it. The hook is nothing special. Jon Connor killed it. Logic killed it. Logic definitely had the best verse, but they all killed it. Logic’s actually talkin’ about shit in his verse. They were all dope tho. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 8: My Time (Black Dave Feat. CJ Fly, Nyck Caution & Josh Xantus)

I heard of Black Dave before, but I never actually heard any of his music. His flow is dope. He had kind of a short verse, but it was dope. I don’t know about this hook from Josh Xantus tho. It’s not terrible. I think this song would be better without a hook tho tbh. CJ Fly did his thing. I heard a few verses from Nyck Caution & he dope af. I think he’s with Pro Era. He killed it. The beat is dope. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 9: Fugazi (Sincere)

Idk if Sincere is just starting or what, but the tracklist said “Fugazi Introducing Sincere”, so he must not be very well known. He can definitely rap tho. That second verse was crazy. The beat is nothing special, but I fuck with this. 4/5

Track 10: Long Time (Action Bronson)

This beat is dope af. The hook is dope. Bronson did his thing on the first verse. The scratches on the hook are dope af. The second verse was cool. This is dope. I fuck with this. Coulda did without that outro tho… 4/5

Track 11: Drunk & High (N.O.R.E. Feat. Termanology & Reks)

I’ve never listened to any music from any of these guys. I think I heard Termanology on a feature once. I’m eating french fries right now. They’re impeccable. Noreaga’s flow isn’t bad. He did his thing. This beat is alright. Termanology was dope. Reks had the best verse. I fuck with this. 4/5

Track 12: The Chopper (Jon Connor Feat. Ransom)

This gonna be dope af. Connor killed it. Ransom fucking destroyed it tho. They was both dope af, but I think Ransom had the better verse. The beat is real smooth. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 13: Down Like This (Sheek Louch Feat. Pharoahe Monch & Crooked I)

This beat is dope af. I was getting worried that the beats were going downhill, but this is dope af. The hook isn’t bad. Louch did his thing. Damn Pharoahe Monch killed that shit. “Of a circle circumference to its diameter / Police scan a scrambler, damage your man with a blammer / Feeding Canada, land of the chicks, now get off my dick.” That was dope. Crooked killed it too. This shit dope af. 5/5

Track 14: Slum Villain (Joey Bada$$)

This beat is dope af. Joey Bada$$ flow is dope on this track. This is dope af. I fuck with this. 5/5

Track 15: Heltah Selektah (Heltah Skeltah)

This beat is smooth af. I’ve never listened to Heltah Skeltah, but I heard Sean Price was dope af. Not sure about Rock tho. Sean Price did his thing. Rock killed it. I actually liked Rock’s verse more. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 16: Overdose (B-Real Feat. JFK)

This beat is dope af. B-Real Killed it. The hook isn’t bad. JFK did his thing too. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 17: Something To Cry For (Boldy James)

Boldy James is dope. I’ll definitely be reviewing Trappers Alley 2 whenever that comes out. This beat is smooth. He did his thing on the first verse. The hook is dope. The second verse was dope. I fuck with this. 4/5

Track 18: Rise Above (Astro Feat. Dessy Hinds)

I’ve heard Astro on some B.E.T. Cyphers, but I don’t remember how well he did. I’ve never listened to his other stuff. I think I liked him on the cyphers tho. Dessy Hinds is dope. Astro did his thing. This beat is smooth af. Astro’s second verse was dope. Dessy Hinds killed it. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 19: Get Away (Joe Scudda Feat. Collin Munroe)

I have no idea who tf these niggas are. The beat is dope af. I think Joe Scudda is the guy on the first verse. His verse was dope. The hook could be better, but it’s not terrible. Collin Munroe verse was dope af. That hook is wack tho. Not feelin’ the hook. The rest of the song is dope tho. 3/5

Track 20: God Knows (Bun B Feat. Jared Evan & POS)

Bun B is a OG, so this will definitely be dope. Oh no. The hook. No. NO! This album was going so well! This hook is just awful tho… Bun B did his thing, but Jared Evan really just kinda ruined it for me. Jesus that hook is awful. The fuck was he thinking? POS verse was dope, but damn. This shit is just… Man, this shit… Man… Nah… Nah that hook is just too much. It’s so corny and it’s just hard to listen to. 2/5

Final Thoughts:

That shit was dope af. I can’t believe it took me so long to finally listen to this shit. This prolly woulda been in my top 10, if I had a top 10 last year & if I listened to it in time. There isn’t a wack verse on this bitch. I wouldn’t take any rapper off. The beats are dope af. They kinda start going downhill towards the end, but they’re still dope. More people shoulda listened to this. Seriously there was like no one talking about it, which is confusing considering the features. He had Ab-Soul, Black Thought, Crooked I, Dilated Peoples, Freddie Gibbs, Joey Bada$$, Jon Connor, Logic, Pharoahe Monch, POS, Royce Da 5’9″ & Talib Kweli on here. Those are some fuckin’ dope features. There are some amazing collabs on here. You would think a song with Ab-Soul, Jon Connor & Logic would blow up, but nobody was really talkin’ about this album. I fuck with this album tho. This album is dope af.
