Album Review | MadGibbs – Piñata

I’m real late on this one. MadGibbs is a Hip Hop duo comprised of rapper Freddie Gibbs & producer Madlib. This shit came out in March last year. I’ve heard great things about this album. It was near the top of everyone’s Best of 2014 list. This’ll prolly be dope af. Every track is produced by Madlib. Damn. I’m lookin’ at the tracklist right now. This shit longer than a mf. This review is gonna take SOOOO long. He got some dope features on this shit tho. I’m reviewing the deluxe edition btw. I’ve never heard a Freddie Gibbs album. I only heard him on features. I never listened to a Madlib or Quasimoto project either… So there ya go.

Track 1: Supplier

Oh shit this beat is dope af. Madlib fuckin’ did his thing this is dope af. There’s no rappin’. It’s just an instrumental intro. I fuck with this. Not finna give it a score, but it’s dope af.

Track 2: Scarface

This beat is dope af. Sounds like… old people music. But in a good way. Sounds like 60s or 70s music with a gangsta rappin’ over it. It’s a short ass song, but it’s dope af. This beat sounds so old. I like it tho. It’s dope. This shit is HARD. I fuck with this. 4/5

Track 3: Deeper

This beat sounds real old too. I fuck with this shit. Gibbs’ voice sounds so perfect over this smooth old school production. Gibbs rappin’ about some chick that don’t fuck with him no more. I usually don’t like songs like that, but this one isn’t bitchmade. A lotta rappers be doin’ lil bitch ass shit. Actin’ like a lil bitch. Talkin’ ’bout, “I could fuck you better than that guy, you know. Fuck you bitch. I don’t even care about you anymore. I’m just leavin’ all these messages to let you know that I don’t care about you anymore. But that dude you fuckin’ with is a bitch & I ain’t, even tho I’m talkin’ about him behind his back. Please take me back. I don’t even really care tho. Please take me back. Please. I’m so lonely… Bitch. I don’t even care… Please tho. Please? Fuck you then bitch… Nah I’m just playin’. You wanna hang out later? I was thinkin’ maybe we could go bowling and then see a movie and then maybe we could smash. If you want to, then call me back and if not than you can suck my dick. Bitch. Please. I love you. That other dude doesn’t fuck you like I used to does he? There’s no way. I used to fuck you for like 12 whole minutes. No one could do better than that. I bet his penis isn’t bigger than mine. Mine’s like 5 whole inches. Haha what a loser. Please? I still love you… Please. Ok I gotta go. I’ll talk to you later. Love you. So… so much…” That’s some Drake ass shit. That’s the bitchest shit a nigga could do. That’s just pathetic. Marvin’s room. Smfh. This song is dope af tho. 5/5

Track 4: High Feat. Danny Brown

This shit smooth af. Damn Gibbs’ flow on this track is dope af. The production is real smooth. Danny Brown did his thing. Song’s obviously about gettin’ high. Songs like that are usually pretty boring to me, but this one isn’t too bad. I fuck with this. 4/5

Track 5: Harold’s

This beat is real smooth. Gibbs’ flow is cool. The hook isn’t bad. Honestly, this song is boring to me. The beat is cool, but it ain’t really nothin’ special to me. Nothing on this song really stands out. It’s not bad. Just not anything special. 3/5

Track 6: Bomb Feat. Raekwon

This beat is dope af. Freddie Gibbs’ flow is dope. Here we go this is the kinda shit I wanna hear from Freddie Gibbs. Gangsta shit. I don’t need to be hearin’ about restaurants or bitches. Just do what you do best. Talk about gangsta shit. This beat is dope af. Of course Raekwon did his thing too. I fuck with this. This is dope af. Woah there’s a dope outro from Madlib. The outro is even better than the beat from the actual song. 5/5

Track 7: Shitsville

Ah shit, this beat is fuckin’ dope af. Man, this shit, man… This beat is fuckin’ crazy. Gibbs’ flow is dope af on this one. I fuck with this shit. This shit HARD. That’s the typa shit I want from Gibbs. HARD shit. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 8: Thuggin’

There’s some sample from a movie I guess. It keeps rewinding to a guy sayin’ “Nigga.” Should I mention the fact that he’s obviously white? Does that matter? I think it do. The guy is white. I think. It’s from an old movie, obviously. It’s rated PG btw. It don’t matter. MAN, WHO GIVE A FUCK? This beat is so fuckin’ dope. It’s even doper than the last one. This shit is HARD af. Gibbs’ flow is on point. This shit is perfect. I shouldn’t say that, but this shit is dope af. The hook is real short and it only lasts a few seconds before he goes right back to the bars. I fuck with this shit. This shit dope af. 5/5

Track 9: Real

This beat sounds real… I don’t know what word I’m lookin’ for. Not dark, but just… Idk… Hard? I guess. The beats on the other songs were dope, but Gibbs was the one bringin’ the hardness, not Madlib. But this beat actually sounds hard. He’s talkin’ about someone who he hates I guess. This nigga mad af. Oh shit he must be talkin’ to Jeezy. He fuckin’ destroyin’ that nigga. The beat just switched up. Gibbs’ flow switched up too. Yeah he definitely talkin’ about Jeezy. He mentioned the fight Jeezy had with Rick Ross at the BET Awards. “Pray the Lord’ll take my breath before I be like this monkey nigga.” He mentioned Gucci Mane. That would be interesting if Gucci Mane & Freddie Gibbs did a song together where they both dissed Jeezy. Except Gucci can’t really rap… But maybe… Even some wack rappers have dope verses every now and then. “So take them shades up off your eyes and look me in my fucking face / ‘Cause I’m a motherfucking rare breed.” This nigga fuckin’ DESTROYED Jeezy. And Jeezy still ain’t said nothin’ back. This shit came out almost a whole year ago & Jeezy never said nothin’. Jeezy a bitch for that. Jeezy could do a diss song. He must be scared because he could do a diss song if he wanted to. He really should. The only thing that could possibly be stopping him is fear. Damn. I don’t know how I feel about Jeezy for that. Well I guess Freddie Gibbs did his job right because I think Jeezy is bein’ a little BITCH. Yeah I said it. Jeezy got murdered on this shit. I fuck with this shit. I’m just mad that the Snowman ain’t responded yet. Fuck. Say somethin’ bitch! This shit dope af tho. But damn… Jeezy what the fuck you doin’? Maybe when Gibbs disses him again he might say something. He probably ain’t even heard the diss song… Fuck… Jeezy is a bitch for that. This shit dope af tho. 5/5

Track 10: Uno

OH SHIT THIS BEAT IS DOPE AF. This fuckin’ beat is insane. Freddie Gibbs really stepped his flow up for this track too. It’s dope af. This is the best his flow has been for the whole album. And this is the best beat on the album so far. The hook is dope too. This is my shit. I fuck with this. This shit dope af. 5/5

Track 11: Robes Feat. Domo Genesis & Earl Sweatshirt

This beat is smooth af. This shit is dope. It might just be me, but it sounds like the beat is way too loud for Domo’s vocals. It actually isn’t that bad. It does sound a little loud tho. Domo Genesis isn’t bad. He used to be a pretty average & boring rapper, but he’s actually been pretty dope lately. The sample for the hook on this song is cool. Earl’s verse was dope. Where the fuck has OF been? They ain’t released shit recently. Are they gonna make The OF Tape, Vol. 3? That would actually be dope af. Gibbs killed it. He sang one bar and it was actually kinda nice. I feel like his voice would be good for Jazz. Maybe. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 12: Broken Feat. Scarface

This beat is dope af. Gibbs did his thing. The hook’s cool. This is dope. Freddie Gibbs sounds great over this production and Scarface fits perfectly too. He killed it. Gibbs chose the right song for a Scarface feature. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 13: Lakers Feat. Ab-Soul & Polyester The Saint

This is just a song about LA. The beat’s nothin’ special. Gibbs did his thing. I honestly never liked songs like this. Songs that are dedicated to a city or location. Shit like that. It’s boring to me. I did like The Recipe by Kendrick tho. I like ’em sometimes, but most of the time these songs is boring af to me. The hook’s alright. Ab-Soul did his thing. Not my type of song tho. 3/5

Track 14: Knicks

This beat is dope af. I heard the remix to this song already. It’s kinda hard to go back to the original. It’s still dope af tho. The remix is even better tho. Freddie Gibbs’ flow is on point and the hook is dope af. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 15: Shame Feat. BJ The Chicago

This beat is dope. Freddie Gibbs’ flow is dope on this track. BJ The Chicago Kid is dope af. I fuck with him. That nigga be singin’ like a mf. This track is cool. I fuck with this. It ain’t dope af tho. But it’s dope. 4/5

Track 16: Watts Feat. Big Time Watts

This is just an interlude with a phone call from some nigga called Big Time Watts that I ain’t never heard of. He mad at somebody. He mad af. Oh he mad at Freddie. Freddie is his nephew. Not really worth talkin’ about. Not gonna give this a score.

Track 17: Piñata Feat. Domo Genesis, G-Wiz, Casey Veggies, Sulaiman, Meechy Darko & Mac Miller

This beat is dope. Domo Genesis verse was actually pretty dope. Freddie Gibbs killed it. I don’t know who the fuck G-Wiz is but his verse was dope af. The nigga got a nice flow. Casey Veggies verse was dope af. His flow was great on this track. I don’t know who the fuck Sulaiman is. I only heard him on two other songs by Chuck Inglish. His verse wasn’t bad tho. It was cool. Meechy fuckin’ killed it. Mac Miller’s verse was dope too. His album Watching Movies With The Sound Off was wack af honestly, but he’s been pretty dope lately. That Faces tape was dope af. I fuck with this song. The beat during the outro to this song is dope af. 4/5

Final Thoughts:

This album was dope, but I don’t think I liked it nearly as much as everyone else seemed to. I liked the production and Freddie Gibbs did his thing, but I just wasn’t amazed like everyone else was. Freddie Gibbs definitely sounds great over this kind of production. Madlib was honestly the best part of this album to me. Gibbs was dope, but these beats are just great. I really wanna hear another diss song like Real. I’m pretty disappointed in Jeezy for not comin’ back at him. Gibbs would destroy Jeezy tho. Jeezy is cool when he’s not fuckin’ around with Future & doin’ lame shit like that, but Gibbs is just miles ahead of him. This shit is dope. I fuck with this album.
