Album Review | Yo Gotti – I Am

This album came out in November of 2013. Is Yo Gotti popular? I really have no idea. I fuck with him tho. Yo Gotti is HARD. Before he released this album, he dropped a mixtape called “November 19th: The Mixtape.” Shit was wack af. I only liked one song off of it called “Cocaine Cowboy.” I’m assuming he left all of the listenable songs on the album. Honestly, that mixtape probably did more to hurt the sales of this album than it did to promote it. This album was apparently nominated for a B.E.T. Hip Hop Award last year, so it should be dope. Then again, it was B.E.T., so it might not be that good…

Track 1: I Am (Prod. Cool & Dre)

This beat is dope af. His flow is cool. He’s talkin’ about the same shit all rappers talk about. “I used to be poor and now I’m rich and I’m good at cookin’ crack.” His flow is actually dope af on this shit. I fuck with this. This is dope. 4/5

Track 2: Don’t Come Around Feat. Kendall Morgan (Prod. DJ Infamous & Xplicit)

Oh no. I don’t want to hear this chick singin’ all over this track. I hate shit like this. It worked on Fragile by Tech N9ne, but I don’t want to hear her sing over this shit. Damn… This beat is dope af. Damn this is dope af. Coulda did without Kendall Morgan on that hook tho… Kinda ruins it for me. This woulda been better without a hook. Yo Gotti’s flow is dope af. He’s actually talkin’ about real shit. The beat’s crazy. Not feelin’ the hook. Yo Gotti did his thing tho. I fuck with this. This actually is dope af. I can get over the hook. 5/5

Track 3: I Know Feat. Rich Homie Quan (Prod. Trauma Tone & Rich Homie Quan)

I Know

This beat is cool I guess. The hook is wack af. It’s finna got stuck in my head tho. Yo Gotti got a corny flow on this shit. This music video is stupid af too. Rich Homie Quan sounds awful on this shit. He sounds like he’s strugglin’ to get his bars out. He sounds like he’s in pain. He sounds like he’s getting tortured. This shit is wack. The only good part of this song is the beat. Even the beat is nothing special honestly. Not feelin’ this shit. 2/5

Track 4: Sorry (Prod. Greedy Money)

Wow. I thought this woulda been one of the deeper, more introspective songs on the album. WRONG. Sure, the producer’s name threw me off a little, but I didn’t really think it mattered. “I like different type of bitches I’m sorry / I could never be committed and I’m sorry.” He should be sorry for makin’ this song. Generic ass beat. Lazy flow. Boring ass bars. Boring hook. This shit is wack af. 1/5

Track 5: Fuck You Feat. Meek Mill (Prod. DJ Infamous)

Fuck You

This might be one of the most ignorant songs I’ve ever heard. I can just imagine a house full of white kids fist pumping to this shit with they middle fingers up. These bars are awful. The beat’s average. “You ain’t fuckin’ you ain’t suckin’ what you doin’ ho?” The way he speaks to women in this song feels like a slap in the face after seeing that Don’t Come Around video. This is terrible. Boring ass flow from Yo Gotti. The hook is fucking terrible. Yo gotti decided to throw some autotune on his voice, even though all he ever says with it is “uh.” This shit is boring af. It’s got a lazy ass hook, uninteresting beat, generic ass flow, and offensive and lazy bars from Yo Gotti. Meek Mill had a much better verse than Yo Gotti, but it still wasn’t very good. I don’t like this shit. It’s so boring. Shit got old after the first verse. 1/5

Track 6: Pride To The Side (Prod. The Youngstars)

I guess this is an attempt at being deep again. He failed this time. The beat’s not bad. He talks about how he’s fuckin’ a bunch of hoes in the beginning of his first verse, but then talks about being hurt when he sees pictures of other guys in his girl’s phone. He’s trying to show emotion in this song, but it just comes off as corny. The hook is wack. Not really feelin’ this shit. It’s way better than the last few tracks tho. 3/5

Track 7: Cold Blood Feat. J. Cole & Canei Finch (Prod. Canei Finch)

Cold Blood

This is the kinda shit I wanna hear from Yo Gotti. I don’t need to hear about how you’re good at cookin’ crack. I like hearin’ about the struggle. The promotion of crack is just boring to me. This is the kinda shit I like. Canei Finch’s hook is fuckin’ dope af. Yo Gotti’s actually rappin’ about something again. This beat is fucking incredible. Yo Gotti’s flow is cool. Cole fuckin’ killed it. His flow was dope af. I fuck with this shit. This shit is dope af. 5/5

Track 8: LeBron James (Prod. Lee On The Beats)

The intro to this beat sounds just like I Remember by Game. This song is just as stupid as that one is. This is just garbage. This is the most generic shit I’ve heard since Sorry by Yo Gotti. It at least sounds okay, sonically. I ain’t like this shit tho. Boring hook. Boring Flow. 2/5

Track 9: Die A Real Nigga (Prod. C-Note)

Oh no. This gargle voice ass nigga tryna use autotune. It sounds fucking awful. It sounds like a robot being tortured. Boring beat. This is bad. This shit wack af. 1/5

Track 12: King Shit Feat. T.I. (Prod. David Versis & Arthur McArthur)

King Shit

This beat is fucking crazy. Yo Gotti’s flow is dope on this. He ain’t sayin’ shit, but he doin’ a good job of flowin’ over the beat. T.I. flow is crazy on this shit. He definitely stole the show from Yo Gotti. Yo Gotti wasn’t bad, but T.I. made him look bad. T.I.’s bars were way better than Yo Gotti’s generic shit. “She open her legs up happily / I ball hard like a athlete.” That’s what I’m talkin’ about when I call Yo Gotti’s bars generic. This is still dope tho. I fuck with this. 4/5

Track 11: Respect That You Earn Feat. Ne-Yo & Wale (Prod. Corparal, Phatboiz & Kenton Dunson)

This beat is cool. I don’t really fit Yo Gotti tho. His flow is alright. I don’t really like this topic. That nigga Ne-Yo be singin’ like a motherfucker. This is kinda corny tho. Maybe because it’s comin’ from Yo Gotti. Wale did his thing. This kinda song works for Wale, but Yo Gotti can’t really pull somethin’ like this off. It’s not a bad song tho. Just not for me. 3/5

Track 12: ION Want It (Prod. Metro Boomin’)

This intro is fucking awful. “Aaaahhooohhhhhwaahhhhh!” He’s supposed to be sayin’ “I don’t want it.” The hook is actually dope tho. He still sayin’ “Ah oh wah”, but it sounds a lot better here than it did on the intro. He ain’t sayin’ shit. But this shit is dope. This shit is HARD. If you like trap music, you’ll like this. It’s a bad song… But it’s dope af. If you’re into trap music you know what I mean. I would never call this a good song, but I like it for some reason. 4/5

Track 13: Act Right Feat. Jeezy & YG (Prod. P-Lo)

Act Right

This beat sounds like a generic DJ Mustard beat. It’s not terrible. Just kinda boring. The hook’s alright. Yo Gotti wasn’t bad I guess. He had some alright lines. “On the real nigga scale 1-10 you a zero.” Jeezy did his thing. YG had a cool verse. It’s not a bad song. It’s alright. 3/5

Final Thoughts:

That wasn’t terrible. It wasn’t very good tho. Most of this shit was generic af. He tried to make emotional songs a few times, but a lot of times it just came off as corny. I want to hear about the struggle that you came from. I don’t wanna hear you make a song about some chick. I also don’t need to hear crack promotion. I don’t give a fuck how good you are at cookin’ dope I ain’t buyin’ shit. Crack is just such a boring topic to me. If he talked about the negative effects it had on his life that woulda been cool. There were some really good songs on here. There were even more bad songs tho. This shit ain’t worth buying. It’s really only worth listening to if you have an ass load of time on your hands. Otherwise you can stay the fuck away from this project.
