Mixtape Review | C Dot Castro – Don’t Over Think

I think this guy used to be signed to Visionary Music Group, but he left. Not sure tho. He was on that song Ballin’ by Logic, and he was also on Logic’s 24 Freestyle. That shit was dope af. I love that song. Oh, never mind. Apparently he is just an “affiliate” of VMG. I don’t know why he isn’t signed to them… I thought he was… Guess not… I’m actually having a really hard time finding information about this guy. I’ve been working on this review for 2 days already and this is all I’ve written. He’s unsigned I guess.

Track 1: The Realest Song I Ever Wrote (Prod. Jae Faive)

Apparently this is the “realest” song he ever wrote. That means that no other song on this tape will be as real as this one. That’s kind of a bad title to give your song. If someone decides to check this song out and they end up thinking it’s bad or even just mediocre, they’ll probably think that there’s no point in checking out his other stuff. I doubt most Hip Hop fans think that much about the shit they’re listening to tho. HotNewHipHop is down right now… I wish it wasn’t. Okay, It’s been three days since I started this review. I just started listening to this song. I’m a minute in and so far it’s just a chick singin’ about “water on the moon” or some shit. I actually have no idea what the fuck she’s singing about. You can hear when the sound clip of her singing ends. It makes it sound kind of cheap. It’s not really a big deal tho. Castro is spittin’ really aggressively over this smooth ass beat. This song is indeed real af. This beat is smooth af. This is dope. “I told Logic I couldn’t have done it without him.” He is apparently a part of the “Rattpack”, which is just Logic’s group of friends & affiliates. Not a label. This is smooth af. I fuck with this. 4/5

Track 2: Kilo

There aren’t any production credits for this song. I wish there were, because this beat is fucking amazing. HOLY SHIT THIS BEAT IS FUCKING CRAZY! WHEN THAT SHIT DROPPED I SAIDDAT BEAT THOOOOOO

Seriously tho, this beat is fucking crazy. Really wish I knew who the producer was. This hook is dope. It has a Kanye West sample. Castro’s flow is on point. I fuck with this shit. This shit dope af. 5/5

Track 3: Royal (Prod. Jae Faive)

This beat is dope af. Castro’s flow is great on this. The beat sounds really dark. This is good. REAL GOOD. His flow is crazy on this. No hook. I think. Oh never mind there is. It just sounds like part of the verse. Kinda. I like it when songs either have no hook or have hooks that sound like part of the verse. This beat is crazy. I fuck with this shit. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 4: Are We There Yet (Prod. OB)

This beat is dope. The hook is cool. His flow is dope. I don’t know why he never signed with Visionary. I feel like he woulda fit in real well over there. This is cool. I fuck with this. 4/5

Track 5: Coast To Coast (Prod. Jae Faive)

What the hell. This beat is… not very good. The hook isn’t very good either. The beat just sounds like noise. His flow is dope. I ain’t feelin’ this tho. The hook isn’t very good and the beat is cacophonous. The only thing that I liked was his flow. Which was pretty great tbh. 2/5

Track 6: Take It Out (Prod. Jae Faive)

This beat’s a lil… soft. I feel bad for sayin’ that. It sounds like something Kid Ink would rhyme over. Not feelin’ this hook. His flow is cool I guess. It’s not a bad track, but I can’t get into this. 3/5

Track 7: Fuck About You (Prod. Jae Faive)

Fuck About You

This hook isn’t very good. It’s not that bad tho. I’m just not feelin’ it. It kinda sounds like the one from the last song. Not really feelin’ this beat either. It sounds like an upbeat Drake instrumental. The verses ain’t bad. The last verse is way better than the first. He sounds great when he has an energetic verse over a soft beat. This song ain’t bad. Just not for me. 3/5

Track 8: Revenge (Prod. OB)

Damn… This shit real af… I’m sorry, but this shit is definitely realer than that first track. He talkin’ about how his mama’s boyfriend beat the shit outta him when he was a lil boy. That’s fucked up. Better him than his mama tho. Is that messed up to say? I’d rather be beat up than have my mama be beat up. He probably feels the same way. Damn this shit real af. In the second verse he was gettin’ ready to pop this nigga, but then his mama called him, but he couldn’t find his phone. I guess he just had a lot of pockets or something… Anyway, she leaves a message, so that shit is the outro for the song. That shit was dope af. Kinda wish he woulda finished the story about gettin’ revenge on his mama ex, but the ending sounded like it was leading up to something and he called his mama an angel in this song and the next song is called Angel. WONDER WHAT THAT’S GONNA BE ABOUT. Anyway, this shit dope af. I fuck with this shit. 5/5

Track 9: Angel (Prod. Pops)

Damn… I spoke to soon. This ain’t about his mama. Well, I never actually said that… Anyway, this beat is kinda boring. It works tho. It isn’t terrible. His flow is average. He be spittin’ tho. He got an angel watchin’ over him. Damn, I really thought he was about to talk about his mama on this shit. Feels like a missed opportunity. That song kinda went nowhere… This song ain’t that bad… I just feel kinda disappointed. 3/5

Track 10: All Right (Prod. Jae Faive & Peru)

Not really feelin’ this beat. It could be better. It really ain’t bad tho. Just nothin’ special. Not really feelin’ the hook either. Castro’s verses is dope tho. His flow is great. Not feelin’ the outro. It’s not a bad track, but I can’t get into this. It’s just a lil too soft. He played Kanye’s Grammy speech at the end. I guess this is supposed to be like an inspirational song or something. Not for me. I don’t need inspiration. I’m good. Just kidding, but this really ain’t my type of song. It ain’t that bad tho. 3/5

Track 11: Forget About It Feat. Lambo Anlo (Prod. Jae Faive)

This is pretty much the same beat from the last song. It’s slightly altered. Just slowed down a lil bit. I don’t know why this is a separate song. I definitely like this one better tho. The hook is better. His flow is even better on this track. This is kinda like a good version of the last song. Sonically, it isn’t very different. It’s really like an opposite version tho. In the last song he said, “Everything’s gonna be all right,” and in this song he said “I been fuckin’ up a little / I just get fucked up a little.” That guy Lambo Anlo wasn’t that bad. He definitely wasn’t as good as Castro tho. His flow was cool. I fuck with this song. 4/5

Track 12: Let It Go Feat. Brooke Aulani (Prod. Jae Faive)

Let It Go

I haven’t worked on this review for 2 days. I haven’t listened to a new song in 2 fucking days. I don’t know why this is happening. This is the first time that’s ever happened. I can’t get through this fucking mixtape. It’s just not keeping me interested for some reason. It’s not even that bad. I just can’t do it for some reason. I only have four songs left to listen to, but I just don’t feel like doing it. This song better be fucking good or else I might not be able to finish this project. I’ve been distracted watching fucking Beyond Scared Straight on Netflix all day. That’s a good ass show. It makes me wanna go through one of the programs even though I’m not a bad kid. They’d be like “WHAT ARE YOU IN HERE FOR!” and I’d just be like “Nothin'” and then they’d say “BULLSHIT!” and I’d be like “Quit yellin’ man, fuck. I’m not a bad kid; I don’t even know what the fuck I’m in here for.” Anyway, this hook is fucking awful. He’s tryna harmonize with this chick. OH fuck no. This beat isn’t good. What the fuck is this corny ass shit? This is awful. During the hook I feel like I’m in a fucking Disney moving, but when he starts rapping I feel like I’m in some Brazilian club. This is bad. I can imagine some white kids fist pumping to this shit. Nah. I ain’t feelin’ this shit. This shit is fucked up. 1/5

Track 13: The Blueprint Feat. Jon Bellion (Prod. OB)

This hook is corny af. Wow, Jon Bellion don’t even get a verse? That white boy be rappin’ like a motherfucker and Castro got him on the hook. Jon Bellion needs to stick to rapping because this Pop shit is lame af. It’s not really supposed to appeal to me, but you can’t be that dope of a rapper and then just not rap. You can’t just gimme a little taste like you did on the 24 Freestyle and then not rap again. I need bars, nigga. 16 of ’em. This hook is bad. Real bad. What the fuck am I listening to? This some corny ass lame ass Disney ass bullshit. I feel like I’m listening to an Eminem song. That’s not a compliment tho… It only sounds like Eminem because of the terribly corny hook and the beat that’s trying too hard to sound inspirational. Castro can rap, but not like Em. This ain’t for me. I ain’t like this shit. 2/5

Track 14: Curtain Call (Prod. Jae Faive)

Woah. This beat is dope af. It’s like a guy talking, but it’s looped and Castro’s rappin’ over it. The clapping and the actual melody of the beat is kinda corny. I like the way the sample is looped, but I don’t really like anything else about this beat. Castro did his thing, but I ain’t really feelin’ this hook. The beat could be so much better. Ah shit. This second verse is dope af. This nigga flow is crazy. Fuck. If you could take the bars and his flow and just leave everything else out this would be dope af. I ain’t really feelin’ this. His flow and bars are dope tho. 3/5

Track 15: Still Got It (Prod. Jae Faive & Pops)

This beat is fucking crazy. This shit knocks. I fuck with this. His flow is dope. This is actually really dope. I fuck with this. This is dope. The hook isn’t bad. The beat switched up for the last verse. This is dope af. 5/5

Final Thoughts:

I guess I just needed a break because I listened to those last 4 songs in like 7 minutes. This tape wasn’t bad. It just gets INCREDIBLY corny towards the end. This tape is pretty much over after the 8th track. He coulda cut this shit in half. He definitely coulda left out that corny ass track with Jon Bellion. Jon Bellion is popular tho, so I guess his name kinda helped this project out. The first 4 tracks are the best part of the whole album. I’ll take the first 4 tracks, the 8th track, MAYBE the 11th track, and the bonus track at the end. Other than that you can keep this shit. Castro can definitely rap, but he needs to get some better producers and stop doing hooks. You don’t need to have hooks in your music. This is Hip Hop. You don’t need a hook. If you’re gonna do a hook, don’t sing. I don’t like sing-songy hooks. I have no tolerance for shit like Let It Go or The Blueprint. That shit was… man… That shit was just bad. Hell nah… I shoulda known a song called Let It Go would make me feel like I was sittin’ in front a screen lookin’ at Frozen. That song was a bad song. I ain’t liked that shit. The nigga can rap tho. I just don’t like his songs. Same problem I got with Eminem. His bars is dope af. His beats and hooks are ass. Felt like someone was rubbin’ they booty cheeks in my ear. That is toilet music. The Blueprint is a toilet song. Let It Go is a toilet song. He can rap tho. He just needs to get some new producers. Let It Go was fucking awful. The beat was fucking out of place. That ain’t Hip Hop. He needs to let that beat go. Same goes for the hook. I really did not like that song. I had a chimichanga today.

  1. OB is Castro’s producer. He was with Visionary before him and Logic’s fallout. He’s currently in prison and getting out in about a year. I didn’t think there would be a possibility of Logic and Castro being friends again, but that might change after he serves time. I lived with Castro for years and know everything. If you want more info, let me know. But it won’t be free

  2. Well it just sounds like Castro isn’t the right guy for you. Rattpack has an underground style and you have a really mainstream view of this. C Dot killed it and if you don’t see that just kill yourself.
