EP Review | Trinidad James – The WAKE Up

This project dropped on January 3rd this year. Trinidad James has had an extremely rough career. He was signed for what felt like two days before he was dropped from Def Jam Recordings. Apparently he was actually signed for like 2 or 3 years, but all he did was drop a mixtape called 10 Piece Mild.

It’s kind of a shame because he’s actually been putting out some tolerable music lately. It’s like as soon as he started trying, everyone stopped listening. I’m actually expecting this EP to be decent.

Track 1: Lost In My Dreams

I can’t find any production credits for this project. This beat is dope af. Don’t expect trap beats from this project because most of these beats sound nothing like All Gold Everything. Trinidad James must’ve produced this because it’s just an instrumental. I fuck with this tho. This is dope af. It kinda sounds like something Drake would rhyme or do that half assed singing over. It sounds a lot less dark than the shit Drake usually goes over tho. It’s relaxing. 5/5

Track 2: Morning Wood Feat. Problem & Friend (Prod. Dun Deal)

This beat is similar to the previous one, but it has more bounce to it. I guess you could say it’s trap inspired. It has the trap hi hats and everything. It’s not really something you could rap about dope to tho. This hook is cool. It’s kind of like a Lil Wayne song. I could see him on this. Problem’s verse was nice. This beat is really dope. It has a kind of progressive sound. Friend is on the hook if you’re wondering what she did. Trinidad James actually didn’t have a verse. He just had a bridge about girls with big asses. He was also on the hook. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 3: Get Dre$$ed Feat. 31

Get Dre$$ed (Rap Game Just Too Funny)

I’m really surprised by how much I like this so far. Wait a minute… I’ve heard this song before… Yeah this song was released a long time ago as “Rap Game Just Too Funny.” It has the same beat and everything. I still don’t know who produced it. He apparently wanted to have Lil Boosie & DMX on this track. That woulda been weird. It’s probably better this way. This beat wouldn’t have worked for them at all. This beat is even more atmospheric than the shit Drake raps over. I don’t know who else could rap over this. Maybe Mick Jenkins. Maybe. The hook’s alright. His flow is a little boring, but it works. He just rhymed “rappin’” with “rappin’” four times. This is actually a pretty boring song. The beat’s cool, but his flow is boring and his rhymes are pretty basic. At least he’s not rapping about the generic hip hop shit. He’s talking about his frustration with the “rap game.” I don’t like when people refer to hip hop as “the game.” It’s alright I guess. 3/5

Track 4: Don’t Ever Lose Your Joy Feat. Neval (Prod. Denice Millien)

This beat is dope af. It’s real dark. It kinda reminds me of Kendrick Lamar’s Swimming Pool instrumental. Trinidadians Neval does his thing on the intro. He’s sangin’. This is weird. There’s just a real short verse from James. This shit is crazy. It’s real different. I don’t even know what genre this is. I usually only listen to Hip Hop so I don’t know what category this would fit into, but I like this song. The beat is fucking crazy. It’s very simple, but it just sounds so dark. It’s a real short song too, but this is dope. It coulda used another verse tho. I still fuck with it tho. 4/5

Track 5: HAVE A Good Day

This is more of what someone might expect from Trinidad James. This is like a weird trap beat. It’s your average “I’m a real nigga” song. He has an average flow. The hook is average. The beat is cool and everything, but it’s nothing special. This is just alright. If you want All Gold Everything Trinidad James you’ll like this song. It’s kinda boring. Not really feelin’ it. 2/5

Final Thoughts:

That was weird as hell. I mean, it isn’t really that weird. Once you realize that this is the same guy that made All Gold Everything and Female$ Welcomed it is tho. This was actually dope. I liked a Trinidad James project. I think it was actually good that he was dropped from Def Jam because he’s actually putting out dope shit now. Even if he was still signed, this isn’t the kinda shit that the mainstream audience wants to hear. This is too weird for them. This kinda reminds me of ILoveMakonnen, except it isn’t fucking terrible. I don’t know why, but I fuck with Trinidad James. I might have a slight bias since my mama is from Trinidad, but I really think he’s a cool guy and if he tried really hard he could have a great project. The beats kinda made this project. He had very few verses. The verses he did have were really short too. That might be why it was so good. I don’t know. All I know is that this was definitely worth listening to and that people should give him a chance. I mean, his verses really weren’t that good in terms of technical ability, but you can tell that he cares about the shit he’s rapping about (maybe not that last track). This project was dope. I fuck with this project.
