Album Review | Ludacris – Ludaversal

This album came out… 2 days ago? Damn. I don’t know why, but I thought I was real late with this review. Probably because it got leaked or something. Anyway, this album was announced all the way back in… 2012!? Geez, what the fuck has he been doing? Why did this take so fucking long? He even released three singles for this album: Jingalin’, Representin’ (I actually like that song; never heard the other two), & Rest Of My Life. None of those songs even ended up on this album. What about that song Party Girls with Jeremih & Wiz Khalifa? How come that isn’t on this album? Not that I really care, but damn. What took so long? Where has he been? My brother told me that he didn’t even know Ludacris still made music. That beat on Party Girls was dope af… This project will hopefully be good. All the reviews that I’ve seen for it seem to think that it’s pretty goddamn good. I really hope they’re right.

Track 1: Ludaversal Intro (Prod. David Banner)

Damn. Where the fuck has David Banner been? I feel like I’m goin’ back in time to the 2000s. The last time I heard from David Banner was all the way back in 2012 when he dropped Sex, Drugs & Video Games. That was actually a pretty good album. It was free too. Well, I don’t know if it was that good. I’m lookin’ at it in iTunes and I only have like 7 songs from it. That doesn’t sound too bad until you realize that there were 20 songs on the album. He’s a good ass producer tho. He’s apparently droppin’ an album called The God Box this year. I’ll definitely review that. This beat is dope af. Ludacris is going crazy. His flow is fucking great. This beat is amazing. This is a great way to start the album off. I coulda did without the girls moaning on the outro tho… 5/5

Track 2: Grass Is Always Greener (Prod. Da Internz)

This beat is okay. I don’t know. Can a beat be corny? It reminds me of The One Eye Kitten Song by Wale. Ludacris did his thing on the first verse. I’m not really feelin’ that hook. It wasn’t bad until he started saying “Bye bye butterfly / Fly away” His bars aren’t weak or anything, but this song just isn’t for me. When I close my eyes while listening to this song, I picture myself outside a mansion surrounded by shirtless white people fist pumping. These are the kind of white people that call each other “my nigga”. I don’t wanna be there. I want to be far away from those people. This isn’t a bad song, but I just can’t get into it. It’s alright. 3/5

Track 3: Call Ya Bluff (Prod. Syk Sense)

Oh fuck. This beat is HARD. This song is a diss towards pussy punk bitches. That’s pretty much the best way to describe it. If you are offended by this song, you’re probably soft. Luda’s flow is on point and the hook is actually dope af. There’s a deep ass voice slowly repeating everything Luda says during the hook. It’s kinda hard to take seriously, but it doesn’t really hurt the song. He said fuck yo couch. Goddamn that was a good show. It’s always depressing when an amazing show like that ends. I fuck with this song. The beat is hard, the hook is dope, his flow is crazy and his bars are on point. 5/5

Track 4: Lyrical Healing (Prod. !llmind & Frank Dukes)

“Too much Tweefin’ goin’ on in this world.” Is that what it’s called? Do people say that? Tweefing? That word is dangerously close to another one that I’d rather not use. Oh shit. This beat is dope af. It’s real jazzy & smooth. There’s no hook. Luda’s flow is cool. This song is only a minute and 16 seconds long. I guess it’s supposed to be an interlude. I’m still gonna give it a rating tho. This song could’ve used more than 16 bars. 32 would’ve made it feel more complete. That would still feel kinda short tho. This song is dope. It would be dope af if it were longer. I fuck with this. 4/5

Track 5: Beast Mode (Prod. 1500 Or Nothin’ & Mike & Keys)

Beast Mode

This beat is excellent. I feel like I’m driving through Atlanta at night. Luda’s flow is cool. This is great. There’s no hook. I’m so glad there’s no hook. It’s just Ludacris goin’ in for 3 minutes. His bars are on point. The line about Pac-Man was nice. I liked that one. Do people still play Pac-Man? Do they make new Pac-Man games? I hope so. This beat makes me think of Kanye West for some reason. It reminds me of Can’t Tell Me Nothing or Grammy Family. This is great. I fuck with this. This shit dope af. 5/5

Track 6: Viagra (Skit)

This skit made me very uncomfortable.

Track 7: Get Lit (Prod. Da Internz & Lil Ronnie)

This hook is real catchy. Goddamn. This beat bangs like a motherfucker. Luda’s flow is on point. Shit. It’s gonna be hard to pick a favorite song for this album. The hook sounded good at first, but after hearing that verse… Idk. It’s just a lot less exciting than actually hearing Luda spit bars. The verses in songs usually feel like they’re leading up to the hooks, but this song is the other way around. The hook feels anticlimactic compared to his verse. The beat doesn’t really drop during the hook. His crazy flow makes the verses sound a lot more energetic than the hook where he just says “get lit.” The first verse is way better than the second and third ones. This song is still dope af tho. I fuck with this shit. 5/5

Track 8: Come & See Me (Interlude) [Prod. DJ Toomp]

Is DJ Toomp considered a legend? Probably not. He’s made some classic songs with T.I. tho. Well, I can only think of one honestly. I should review a T.I. project… This beat is honestly annoying as hell. This song is about how Luda is in love with his car and how his actual girl is annoying af. I guess. His flow is nothing special. This isn’t really a bad song, but compared to the other ones so far this is kinda wack. It’s just kinda boring. It’s really not bad tho. The beat is just kind of annoying, but everything else is fine. It’s alright. 3/5

Track 9: Come & See Me Feat. Big K.R.I.T. (Prod. Mike WiLL Made It)

Come & See Me

This hopefully won’t suck. Big K.R.I.T. is one of my favorite rappers, but I don’t think that Mike WiLL Made It is a very good producer. OOOOOHHH FUCK! This beat is fucking crazy!

DAT BEAT THOOOOOO

Oh FUCK yeah, bitch. Luda & K.R.I.T. are tradin’ bars throughout the whole song! Yes! This is exactly what I wanted to hear. Damn. Mike WiLL usually isn’t that good, but this beat is fucking crazy. The hook is great too. This shit is great. This song is about they love for cars just like the last one, but they ain’t bitter about some chick this time. I don’t know how this song could be any doper. I love this shit. I fuck with this. This shit dope af. 5/5

Track 10: Good Lovin’ Feat. Miguel (Prod. Da Internz)

Good Lovin'

This song was on that Burning Bridges EP that Ludacris released back in December last year. I’m not even gonna put the link to that review on this one because it was so bad. That review is probably the worst one I ever did. The PRhyme review was probably worse tbh. Anyway, I liked this song when I heard it the first time, but it was just kinda soft. Miguel is sangin’ like a motherfucker on this bitch. He be sangin’ his ass off. Luda’s flow is cool. You can probably guess what this song is about from the title. It’s soft. Basically, it’s a pretty good song, but I wouldn’t wanna be caught listening to this. ‘Cause I’m a OG. I fuck with this song tho. This song is dope. 4/5

Track 11: Ocean Skies Feat. Monica (Prod. Kyle Justice & J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League)

Ocean Skies

This song is dedicated to Ludacris’ father who died from diabetes, which was probably caused by his alcoholism. This beat is dope af. It sounds like a guitar. I said in one of my previous reviews that I don’t like the guitar, but this doesn’t sound bad. Maybe I just don’t like electric guitars. Idk. This is definitely the realest song on the album. He’s talkin’ about growin’ up with an alcoholic father. I don’t know who Monica is, but she does an alright job with the hook. I’m not really a fan of really melodic hooks. I kinda wish there wasn’t a hook. The one on this song isn’t too bad tho. Damn. This is really sad. “You left the day after I put you into my Grammy speech / It’s almost like you waited just to see me win / Well, pops I can’t wait until the day we meet again.” I fuck with this. This is dope. I feel bad for not saying it’s dope af, but the hook just… I wasn’t really feelin’ the hook. It wasn’t terrible, but it was just… Nah. I liked the song tho. 4/5

Track 12: Not Long Feat. Usher (Prod. Mel & Mus)

This beat is cool. I don’t know what it is, but it sounds kind of empty. Especially during the hook. Maybe it’s the hook that sounds empty. Usher did his thing, but it’s just a little slow. Actually this beat is pretty dope. Ludacris did his thing. His flow is nothing special. His bars are cool. Something about that hook just sounds off. Idk. It’s not a bad song. Just not for me. It’s a lil soft. I like the beat. Luda did his thing. Usher didn’t do a bad job or anything. Just not my cup of tea. 3/5

Track 13: Charge It To The Rap Game (Prod. !llmind)

Charge It To The Rap Game

This hook is alright. It’s kind of boring, but it works. It’s just him sayin’, “Sometimes you gotta charge it to the rap game.” This beat is cool. It’s not great. It’s cool tho. Luda’s flow is nice. His verses were dope af. Not much to say about this track. The bars were dope. The beat’s good. The hook works. I fuck with this. 4/5

Track 14: This Has Been My World (Prod. Just Blaze)

Oh fuck yeah. Just Blaze is the shit. I can already tell this song is about to be dope af. Yup. This beat sounds like some 80s disco shit. Luda’s flow is on point. The hook is dope. This beat sounds so dramatic. He’s rappin’ about how much he loves bein’ a rapper. It’s pretty much how his life is awesome. Not really because he has bitches & money, but because he has fame and he loves Hip Hop and bein’ a rapper.  There’s a long ass spoken word outro from some guy named Big Rube. Not sure who that is. He’s apparently a member of some group called the Dungeon Family. This is crazy. This is a hell of a way to end the album. I think it’s lame af when people call things “epic”, but that’s really the best way to describe this song. It just sounds so dramatic and huge and triumphant. I fuck with this shit. This shit is dope af. 5/5

Final Thoughts:

This album is GUD. I never really listened to Ludacris like that before, but I’m glad he’s back. He’s one of the few legends from the 2000s. There are a few tracks on this album that I didn’t really like, but I can’t say any of these songs are bad. Just not for me. The worst track on here was probably the Viagra skit and that wasn’t even a song. It was kinda funny I guess (not really), but… Well, actually it really wasn’t funny at all. It felt pretty childish tbh. Viagra jokes? I haven’t heard a Viagra joke since I was in the 5th grade. I really don’t understand interludes like that. Why the hell was that even… Why does that even exist? It’s so random. It has nothing to do with anything. It’s not that big of a deal, but damn. The features on this album were all pretty good. I just realized that there’s only one rap feature, and I honestly can’t think of anyone that deserves it more than him. That song with Big K.R.I.T. is my shit. MAYBE T.I. coulda been on the album, but I really feel like Big K.R.I.T. is the hottest rapper from the South right now. If you’re a fan of Ludacris there’s really no reason for you to not like this project. Honestly, there’s no reason for anyone to not like this project. I guess if you aren’t really into Southern Hip Hop you won’t like it. Some of these songs just HAVE to be heard tho. If you just want to hear some deep shit, I don’t know why you would want to hear it from Ludacris, but Ocean Skies is exactly what you’re looking for. The second half of this album is a lot less HARD, but it’s still pretty good. If you just want what Luda’s known for, listen to the first half and the track with Big K.R.I.T. If you want some softer shit, listen to the second half. If you just want some good ass Hip Hop, listen to the last track. Well the whole album is full of good ass Hip Hop, but the last track especially. I fuck with this album. This shit is dope.

Favorite Song: Come & See Me

Least Favorite Song: Come & See Me …the interlude… not the one with krit.
