Album Review | Tyler The Creator – Cherry Bomb

This album came out seven days ago (April 17). Tyler The Creator used to be one of my favorite rappers (I have no idea why tbh), but he honestly isn’t anymore. I don’t think he’s wack now or anything, but he just isn’t as good as a lot of other rappers. I don’t think any of his albums are wack so far, but none of them are really amazing. I didn’t listen to all of Bastard or Goblin. Wolf was pretty good. His production skills (as Ace The Creator) usually have a blatant increase in quality with each release, so I’m expecting the beats to be good. On Goblin, a lot of the beats just sounded really trashy. He did a much better job with that lo-fi sound on Wolf. It actually sounded good on Wolf. I really want to like this album. I’m not really sure if I’m going to tho. The response that Tyler’s been getting from this project seems to be pretty mixed. I hope I like it. I don’t like bad music. Good music is so good. I like good music. Please be good. Please. I feel like Tyler The Creator could be a really great rapper, but the topics he chooses to speak about usually aren’t that good. Even when the subject matter is good, he tends to have an immature view on things. There’s a song called Blow My Load. There’s also a song called The Brown Stains of Darkeese Latifah. I don’t know what to say about that. Those probably aren’t gonna be… Well, I guess I shouldn’t judge a song by it’s title. I’m just gonna go ahead and start listening. Every song on the project is produced by Ace The Creator by the way. Ace The Creator is the name that Tyler goes by as a producer.

Track 1: Deathcamp

This beat is cool. Tyler’s delivery and flow are nice, but it sounds like his vocals aren’t loud enough. I can barely hear him. The beat gets kind of annoying after about 30 seconds. It shoulda switched up a little more. There’s some terrible singing in the background. “YEEEEAAAAAAHHH YEEAAH YEAH YEAH.” It’s obviously not meant to sound very serious. It’s pretty annoying tho. Sounds like a 90 year old smoker who got they voice pitch shifted up. The beat kinda switched up at the end for the bridge. Just for a second tho. This song is honestly annoying af. The beat just sounds obnoxious. I get that it’s supposed to be loud and capture your attention, but it just gets old after a while. I don’t really like the guitar. It’s annoying to me. I’m not really feelin’ this song. 2/5

Track 2: Buffalo

This song opens with the same vocal sample as Numbers On The Boards by Pusha T. The beat is real simple, but Tyler sounds great over it. His vocals still sound a little quiet. It’s not nearly as bad as it was on the last track, but it is noticeable. Damn. He just mentioned Hopsin. Ill Mind of Hopsin 4 was a fucking great song, but the diss to Tyler The Creator was always the one thing that sorta took away from it. That was completely random. I saw an interview where they asked him why he dissed Tyler and he basically just said, “He’s too negative.” Of course he hates negativity, why else would he insult someone like that? It really just felt like a shameless publicity stunt. I did like the rest of the song tho. Tyler’s actually talking about all the stuff that’s been happening to him. He usually just says, “PEOPLE THINK I’M AN ATHIEST (is that not how you spell it? the spell check is being stupid…) THAT WORSHIPS THE DEVIL AND THAT’S STUPID! FUCK THEM!” It’s nice to hear him actually explain a little bit more. It’s not amazing, but it’s good. I fuck with this. This is dope. 4/5

Track 3: Pilot

The drum pattern so far is pretty dope. What… What the fuck… The sound quality is… so… It’s so fucking awful. I heard people complaining about it before, but I didn’t think it would be this bad. Jesus. Why? That’s not good. Don’t give me all that “IT WAS INTENTIONAL! IT WAS AN ARTISTIC CHOICE!” Just because it was intentional doesn’t mean I have to like it. Bondage porn is intentional (I think), but nobody gets mad at me for not liking that shit. I don’t care about the fucking “art” he’s trying to convey. If the music doesn’t sound good, it doesn’t sound good. I don’t wanna listen to homeless people bang on trash cans. The annoying thing is… This beat is honestly dope af. It sounds so good, but I feel like I’m listening to a leaked version that someone recorded with they phone while they was in the booth. Why would you do this intentionally? I don’t like it. I know it was intentional, but most things that artists do are intentional. It doesn’t make sense to give him a pass just because it was on purpose. It was a bad decision. The beat is so fucking good too. Why? Why did it have to be this song? It’s like listening to a sound file on a Motorola Razr. The song is soooo good tho… But it sounds terrible. God damnit. Why. He needs to release a proper version. What if the HQ version is exclusive to Tidal subscribers. That would honestly be hilarious, but also annoying af. I like the song. I just don’t like the way he released this. I don’t know how to describe the way I feel. This should’ve been an amazing song. He fucked up tho. 3/5

Track 4: Run

The transition from the previous track into this one was dope af. I think the quality is gonna be wack on this one too tho. It definitely sounds like it from the first 6 seconds. I’m not gonna be able to give a proper review if the whole album’s like that. This one actually isn’t that bad. It’s definitely a little off, but it’s nowhere near as rough as the previous track. Yeah. It still sounds rough. Not terrible tho. His vocals are hard to hear. They’re also pitch shifted up. He shouldn’t’ve did that. HIs flow is dope. The topic is actually dope too. He’s talking about people that wanna act hard and start gangbangin’. I’m getting pissed off. All of these tracks (not the first one tho…) could’ve been so much better. A few things just need to be tweaked before I can really enjoy it tho. Speak the fuck up. Damn. Can’t hear half the shit he’s sayin’. Don’t pitch shift your vocals. Please. Don’t do it. When does that ever add to the song? I guess you can have a part of it be pitch shifted, but not the whole thing. That’s just going to far, man. That’s crossing the line. Jk. It isn’t good tho. I want to like this song. The beat’s cool and the flow and topic are dope. There are just so many problems that could’ve been easily avoided. Just do it right. Don’t intentionally fuck it up. That’s a bad idea. Don’t. Don’t do it. Please. 3/5

Track 5: Find Your Wings

Oooh. Oh fuck. This actually sounds like it was mastered. It sounds so smooth. I’m only 30 seconds in and I can already tell that this is gonna be better than the other shit. There’s some chick singin’. I think Tyler’s singin’ too. Oh. Damn. Tyler isn’t on this song. He just produced it. There’s some chick singin’ and he says a little bit of shit, but he really just produced it. That’s actually pretty impressive that he produced this whole thing by himself. It sounds like something that would’ve been on To Pimp A Butterfly. It reminds me of These Walls sonically. That’s actually really awesome that he did it all by himself. Lyrically, it’s a lot like The World Is Yours by Nas. He even says “The world is yours” at one point. The message is just that you shouldn’t be afraid to do what you think you were meant to do in life. That’s actually a really good message now that I think about it. The message that we always get is “BE YOURSELF!” Yeah we fucking get it. We know we should be ourselves. Everybody tells everybody to do that every fucking day. I hate it when someone tells me that a song has a really good message and then I hear it and it’s “BE YOURSELF!” Why the fuck wouldn’t I be myself? I love myself. I hate so many other people. I don’t wanna be anyone but myself. If you aren’t me, fuck you. Just kidding. Are there really that many people that don’t be theyself? If you’re a fucking lame ass dork, be a lame ass dork. If you’re racist, at least be honest about it. If you’re perfect, be perfect. If you’re homosexual, be homosexual. Don’t hide… Wait a minute… Why am I preaching to you guys? What was I talking about? Damn. I guess that was really hypocritical… Sorry about that. Damn. Anyway, this song is actually dope af. It’s not really the kind of song that I would listen to like that, but the production is dope af and the message is great. It’s basically a song by Ace The Creator with background vocals from Kali Uchis. That’s her name btw. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 6: Cherry Bomb

WHAT THE FUCK? THIS IS SOOOO FUCKING TERRIBLE. WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT??? THIS IS SO FUCKING BAD. THIS IS DEFINITELY THE WORST SHIT I’VE HEARD SINCE H.O.M.E. This is… Why the fuck did he do that? I really didn’t… There’s no way he could possibly think this is entertaining. How could you possibly like this shit? I mean, if you like it that’s cool, but… WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT? I’m worried that my headphones are gonna break. As soon the beat dropped my body twisted up and flinched and I fucked my neck up. It fucking hurts. This song is so bad that it physically hurt me. This is hilariously bad. This is… BAD. I don’t know what else to say. This song is just a whirlpool of noise. It’s like he pressed record on his computer, dropped it in a toilet and then flushed it. That’s the song. I really didn’t expect to hear something so bad from Tyler. Why the fuck would you name your album after this? This is Cherry Bomb? This is what I’m listening to? Why? This is… music? It sounds like a car ramming into my ears over and over again. It’s like he pressed record on his computer and launched it into the sun. That’s what I’m listening to. Who likes this shit? Does he? As soon as the beat dropped my hand flew towards the volume controls. My computer wanted to turn itself down when that shit started. This song isn’t good. To me. I don’t know what kind of a person would like this. This sounds like some shit that anybody could make. It’s not mastered properly. It sounds like he just pressed record on his computer and then smashed the shit out of it with a bass guitar. This isn’t a good song. I don’t even know what the fuck he’s talking about. I can barely hear what the fuck he’s saying. One of the comments on RapGenius says, “Very Yeezus-esque. But it’s done better in my opinion.” Yeah… I’m gonna go ahead and give that a thumbs down. I’m not really a fan of Yeezus, but even that shit didn’t get to this point. It’s like you can record yourself passing a kidney stone and people will call it art because it’s “different.” It’s “abstract.” Shit like this doesn’t take creativity. According to RapGenius, the first thing he says on this song is “I really made this song just so I could perform it.” If you don’t think it’s actually a good song, why would you put it on your album? Who wants to hear this shit? I get that it may be fun to perform, but if you’re gonna make a song like this at least make sure that it’s fun to listen to. Hell nah. This shit is wack af. Fucking horrible. 1/5

Track 7: Blow My Load

I know I shouldn’t judge a song by its title, but I don’t think this is gonna be very good. Why the fuck does he do this. I CAN’T FUCKING HEAR YOU! DON’T MIX THE FUCKING ALBUM LIKE THIS! I feel like I’m just listening to a fucking synthesizer with some guy mumbling in the background. There’s a background singer. He’s singin’ his motherfuckin’ ass off. He’s just talkin’ about eatin’ pussy. This song is makin’ me uncomfortable. How the fuck I’m gonna look listening to another man talk about eatin’ pussy like this? There’s an interlude with the sounds of someone suckin’ pussy. It’s pretty disturbing tbh. I mean, I’m all for eatin’ pussy and everything, but I really don’t wanna hear Tyler talk about it like this. The beat isn’t that good. The topic and bars are making me uncomfortable. It’s not mastered properly. I’m listening to a man eat pussy. Why the fuck would I want to hear that? That shit is wack af. Nah. 1/5

Track 8: 2Seater/Hair Blows

The transition from Blow My Load into this song was dope. This is mixed properly. This beat is smooth af. Tyler’s vocals are still a little quiet. The singin’ on the hook is pretty wack. It’s not bad enough to destroy the whole song. I fuck with this beat. It’s real jazzy. The bridge is wack. He’s singin’. He can’t sing tho. Rappers… Trying to sing… I’m not even gonna say anything about that again. He just shouldn’t sing. Because he can’t sing. Is anyone really surprised by that? You really shouldn’t be. It’s not good. He actually went off on the second verse. The song just switched to Hair Blows. He listens to Mac DeMarco. That’s funny. Tyler’s singing is bad. And it’s pitch shifted now. That’s not good. 2Seater was alright, but I’m really not feelin’ Hair Blows. A lot of these songs are about some chick that he’s in love with. Those kinds of songs never really interest me. It’s just a boring topic to me. This is not very fun to listen to. This singing is bad and the lyrics are just… not… They aren’t bad, but they’re just kinda… weird. Why does he like Mac DeMarco so much? I feel bad for saying this, but Tyler The Creator is white af… I’m so sorry for saying that. This Hair Blows track is wack af. 2Seater was alright. 2/5

Track 9: The Brown Stains of Darkeese Latifah, Pt. 6-12 (Remix) Feat. ScHoolboy Q

tumblr_o2aainl3dt1s5wcwio1_r1_1280

What the fuck? I haven’t started listening to it yet… but what the fuck? Hopefully this doesn’t suck ass. I’m sure Q’s part will be dope. Damn. This beat is dope. Tyler’s vocals are still a little too quiet. Okay, from now on just assume that the vocals are too quiet for every song unless I say otherwise. It’s not that bad here. It could be a little better tho. The beat’s noisy as hell. I fuck with it tho. He’s talkin’ about gangbangin’. He’s not really promoting it like a lot of rappers do. He’s definitely looking down on gangs. The topic is dope and the beat isn’t bad and ScHoolboy Q & Tyler did they thing, but I just can’t see myself coming back and listening to this song. I feel like if I don’t delete it, I’ll never listen to it again. It’s not wack, I just can’t say it’s dope. It’s alright. 3/5

Track 10: Fucking Young/Perfect Feat. Charlie Wilson & Kali Uchis

Oh no. Oh fuck no. Tyler’s singing. It’s pitch shifted. The intro made it sound horrible, but when the song actually starts it doesn’t really sound that bad. Tyler’s singing isn’t good. It’s pitch shifted and it sounds like there’s autotune on there too. Charlie Wilson is singin’ his motherfuckin’ ass off. This song would probably sound a lot worse if it weren’t for him. He’s pitch shifted too tho. What the fuck? This is weird af. He’s just talking about how he’s in love with a little ass girl, but he don’t wanna go to jail for bein’ a pedophile. That’s basically what it is. “And girl, you stole my heart but you’re too fucking young / This is more than a crush, I just might be in love.” I don’t like love songs in the first place, so this extra layer of weirdness is making me a little uncomfortable. He’s actually rappin’ on the second verse. This is depressing to listen to. Tyler is trying so hard to sing, but he just can’t. I’m not feelin’ Fucking Young. His singin’ is just bad. This is making me sad. The beat is cool & Charlie Wilson did his thing, but he was really just helping Tyler out. He was in the background repeating most of what Tyler said. Without Charlie Wilson it would be fucking unbearable. It’s wack. Perfect isn’t very good either. It’s the same topic, but Kali Uchis is singing from the perspective of the little ass girl. She clearly likes him too, but it’s still just weird af to me. It’s like this song was written about Tyga & Kylie Jenner. They both like each other, but it’s still just… weird af. I don’t know how else to say it. My sister is older than Kylie Jenner and she hasn’t even finished high school yet. Kali Uchis’ singing is alright I guess. She actually sounds like a little girl kinda. It’s definitely better than Tyler’s singing. They’re both singing at the same time right now and I want to kill myself. This isn’t good. I’m not feelin’ this at all. This is bad. Fucking Young was wack. Perfect is wack af. Overall, it’s wack. I liked the beats and Charlie Wilson. I’m not feelin’ anything else about this track tho. 2/5

Track 11: Smuckers Feat. Kanye West & Lil Wayne

Damn. Okay. This probably won’t be wack af. I know Tyler has known Lil Wayne & Kanye West for a long time and I always wanted him to do a song with one of them. Didn’t expect to have both of them on the same track with him. That’s dope. I hope the actual song is dope. Oh fuck yeah. This beat is dope af. This beat is fucking CRAZY!

DAT BEAT THOOOOOO

Actually, this beat really isn’t that different from the rest of the tracks on here. I think I might just be excited to see how Wayne fits on here. I’m not really a big Weezy fan at all, but it’s gonna be really interesting to see how he sounds over this production. Kanye shouldn’t sound too out of place over this. Tyler’s flow is dope. His vocals sound fine on this one. “Ban a kid from the country, I never fall, never timber / But you fucked up as a parent, your child idol’s a nigger.” That’s just dope af. Fuck those racist ass parents. Kanye opens his verse talkin’ about Nike. This is dope af. Kanye sounds great. He doesn’t sound like a fucking asshole. Well, he does, but not as much as he usually does. He mentioned Jerome. Again. What the fuck is with Kanye West and Jerome? Damn. It’s not really a bad thing, but it’s just weird. GOD. DAMNIT. I accidentally skipped to the next song. That’s alright tho. I’ll start it over. “Richer than white people with black kids / Scarier than black people with ideas” That’s one of Kanye’s lines. Kanye’s verse was actually dope too. Hopefully Wayne doesn’t fuck this shit up. The beat switched up after Kanye’s verse. It’s still dope. Weezy & Tyler do they thing for the bridge. They tradin’ bars. This is fucking dope af. Wayne sounds great. He actually sounds like he’s trying again. It would sound pretty weird if he just came outta nowhere talkin’ about pussy and calling himself the shit. Well, he still mentioned eatin’ pussy, but it wasn’t as bad as it was on IANAHB2. Tyler said “Ye we hittin’ models like Tony Parker be hittin’ bottles.” They all did they thing. They all had dope verses. Lil Wayne had a dope verse. I haven’t said that shit in a long ass time. Well… Actually that isn’t true… Anyway, all three of them had dope verses and the beats were fucking crazy. This is definitely my favorite song on the album so far and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. I fuck with this shit. This shit is dope af. Wayne needs to rap over production like that more often. 5/5

Track 12: Keep Da O’s Feat. Pharrell Williams

Not really feelin’ this beat. Pharrell’s pitch shifted. I don’t think I would’ve liked his verse even if it wasn’t pitch shifted. I’m not really feelin’ his flow. The hook was kinda wack too. I don’t know why I used the word “kinda.” This shit is very wack. Why the fuck would I want to hear this shit? Tyler’s pitch shifted too. This shit is fucking cacophonous. It’s nowhere near as bad as Cherry Bomb, but damn. This shit don’t sound good at all. This shit just got so soft. I don’t mean like Drake soft. The sound is just less abrasive. Everything switched up. It sounds like some little ass kids sayin’ keep da o’s, but I think it might just be Tyler with a pitch shift. He’s singing. Again. It’s still terrible. There’s some chick telling me to find my wings again. Nah. I ain’t feelin’ this shit. I appreciate the message and everything, but sonically this shit is wack af. I feel like the worst shit keeps coming after the best songs. 1/5

Track 13: Okaga, CA

Oh no. Pitch. Shift. Why? Why do people do that shit? I hate pitch shifting in music. He’s singing. Pitch shifting may be tolerable when you’re rapping, but it could not possibly make your music sound better if you’re trying to sing your ass off like that. He can’t sing in the first place, so it’s ULTRA BAD. His vocals aren’t too quiet. This is bad. There’s some chick singin’ with Tyler. I don’t know who it is. It’s another song about him bein’ with this chick. He’s rapping now. He sounds good over the beat, but the beat itself doesn’t sound that good. It’s not terrible, but it doesn’t stand out. That singing just… Nah. This isn’t for me. This… I ain’t feelin’ this shit. This is wack. 2/5

Final Thoughts:

Holy shit. That was disappointing as fuck. This is all just my opinion, but damn. You gotta mix your shit properly, man. Why the fuck would I wanna hear that shit? Why would I wanna hear something that sounds so trashy? You had a good thing goin’ with Wolf. What the fuck happened? All this album is is Analog with a ton of shitty, pitch shifted singing, or Tamale with a fucking cacophonous unmastered beat. If that sounds good to you, then you will love this album. If there’s one positive thing that I can say about this project, it is that I think Tyler The Creator has become a fucking great producer. The fact that he produced Find Your Wings and Smuckers all by himself is really impressive. If he would’ve mastered it properly that would’ve been good too. I don’t think Tyler The Creator is a bad rapper. The choices he made with this album were just bad. I didn’t really complement his rapping very much because he was singing half the time. Either that, or he was saying some really weird ass shit like on Fucking Young. Also, people keep comparing this project to Death Grips. I’ve only listened to two Death Grips songs and I don’t really like they shit, but I can tell that they are a much more creative group than Tyler The Creator. This doesn’t sound like experimental Hip Hop. It just sounds like Hip Hop with a shitty unmastered beat, or smooth, soulful R&B with terrible pitch shifted singing. Wolf was so dope. I’m pretty disappointed with this project. There were so many dope fan made covers that I won’t be able to use. I really hope his next project is better than this shit. It wasn’t complete garbage. There were some alright songs. There were just a lot of poor decisions made. It’s alright. I guess. It just barely escapes being called wack. It’s alright.
