Album Review | Gangrene – Welcome To Los Santos

Gangrene is a duo comprised of The Alchemist & Oh No. The only shit I’ve ever heard from Gangrene was that track in GTA V called Bassheads. I thought that song was wack af. I do like The Alchemist & Oh No tho, so I’m just gonna assume that that song was just a dud. I’m sure they’re actually dope. This album was released on April 21st in promotion for the Windows version of Grand Theft Auto V. I guess that version of the game has an extra station or something. I really wanted to make sure I reviewed this because ain’t nobody really talkin’ about it and I probably won’t ever get around to listening to it if I don’t do it now. I’m assuming every song on here is produced by Gangrene. I really don’t know what to expect. I think some of the songs on here aren’t even Hip Hop. I hope this is dope.

Track 1: Play It Cool Feat. Samuel T. Herring & Earl Sweatshirt

Samuel T. Herring, according to RapGenius, is a “Future Islands vocalist.” I’m not sure what Future Islands is. He’s singing on the intro to this song. It’s not really bad, but it isn’t anything special. The Alchemist is on the first verse. He did his thing. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him rap before. He wasn’t bad. I actually like Samuel T. Herring’s hook. The beat is dope. Kinda sounds like something MF DOOM might rhyme over. Earl fucking killed it. I wish he would do features more often. This is dope. I fuck with this. 4/5

Track 2: Trouble (Ab-Soul Feat. Aloe Blacc)

This beat is smooth af. Aloe Blacc be singin’ like a motherfucker. He’s singin’ his ass off. “But wherever I go / Seems like trouble will find me.” Soulo did his thing on the first verse, but he really went the fuck off on the second verse. “You just record tracks, what a waste of wax / Name an individual exempt from a candlelight vigil and bring me his head.” This is dope af. The beat is dope, Aloe Blacc sang his motherfuckin’ ass off and Ab-Soul did a great job, especially on the second verse. I fuck with this. This is dope af. 5/5

Track 3: Speedline Miracle Masterpiece (Tunde Adebimpe Feat. Sal P & Sinkane)

I have no idea who the fuck any of these people are. I don’t know who’s who. Oh fuck. This isn’t Hip Hop. I can’t stand music like this. I don’t even think I should speak about this. I can’t call this bad because I don’t listen to rock music like that, but I would never listen to this shit ever again. TO ME this shit is fucking terrible. All you need to know is that it’s not Hip Hop. I don’t like this shit. Hell fuckin’ no. That fucking hook is awful. If you aren’t like me, and you like rock music you might like this. I don’t know. If you don’t like rock music you’ll probably think this is fucking awful. Because I do. 1/5

Track 4: Welcome To Los Santos (MC Eiht Feat. Freddie Gibbs & Kokane)

Oh fuck yeah, bitch. This shit’s probably gonna be dope af. MC Eiht, Freddie Gibbs & Kokane? You can’t go wrong with that shit. AND you got Gangrene on the beat. This is about to be dope af. Oh hell yeah. This shit is GANGSTA AS FUCK! This beat is so gangsta. It sounds like some more 90s west coast gangsta rap. This shit is crazy. This beat is dope. MC Eiht sounds amazing over this beat. It seriously sounds like some Dr. Dre shit. FUCK yes. This is perfect. Freddie Gibbs is rappin’ his ass off. This is so fuckin’ hard. Kokane is singin’ on the outro. It wasn’t bad. This song is fucking amazing. God damn. This is awesome. I love this song. I fuck with this song. This shit is fucking dope af. 5/5

Track 5: K.Y.S.A. (Phantogram)

I’m not really familiar with Phantogram. I heard some shit they did with Big Boi, but that was just one song. I have no idea what to expect. I don’t think this is Hip Hop tho. I probably won’t like this. This really isn’t my kind of music, but I don’t think it’s terrible. I just wouldn’t wanna hear this. It’s not bad tho. It sounds like video game music. Well, I guess it’s supposed to since this is for GTA V, but still. It’s not really for me, but it isn’t terrible. It’s alright I guess. I would never want to hear it again tho. I’d definitely rather hear this than Speedline Miracle Masterpiece. That shit was fucking terrible to me. This is alright tho. 3/5

Track 6: Fast Life (Vybz Kartel)

When was this song made? According to Wikipedia, Vybz Kartel will remain in jail for the next 35 years. He’s been in there since April of last year. That sucks. I’ve never heard any of his music. I’m not really into Dancehall music like that. My dad is. It’s annoying af to me. Hopefully this isn’t bad. He’s autotuned. I ain’t feelin’ this. I didn’t like his delivery on his verse and the hook is wack to me. The beat isn’t that good either. The autotuned singing is annoying as fuck. Nah. I ain’t feelin’ this. 2/5

Track 7: 20’s 50’s 100’s (King Avriel Feat. A$AP Ferg)

I have no idea who King Avriel. It’s a female tho. That’s all that I know. A$AP Ferg’s on the first verse. “Walked in the club and the booty clappin’.” Yeah. It’s that kind of song. This is so… Ghetto. This is so fucking stereotypical. I know I just reviewed Young Thug’s mixtape, but damn. That didn’t seem as bad. It’s probably because I was expecting it. Ferg’s style in general just feels a lot more coonish than Young Thug’s tbh. I guess his flow is alright, but the shit he’s saying is just so… He… Umm… I’ll put it like this. If a rich white republican man was meeting a black person for the first time, I really wouldn’t want it to be A$AP Ferg. If a rich white republican were to listen to Hip Hop for the first time, I really wouldn’t want it to be A$AP Ferg. If a rich white republican did anything that has anything to do with black people for the first time, I wouldn’t want A$AP Ferg to be involved. That would be the birth of a KKK member. So there ya go. I wasn’t really feelin’ his verse. King Avriel is sangin’. Her voice isn’t terrible, but it’s not that great. A$AP Ferg’s ad-libs in the background are really weird. She’s not bad. She’s not really anything special. A$AP Ferg feels kinda out of place. King Avriel isn’t really singing about anything deep, but she sounds a lot more sophisticated. I’m not really feelin’ this. The hook is actually dope, but the rest of it is kinda wack. I like the beat too. This honestly wouldn’t be that bad without Ferg, but it wouldn’t be anything special either. Not feelin’ it. 2/5

Track 8: Lock & Load (MNDR Feat. Killer Mike)

I think MNDR’s been featured on some shit that I heard, but I still don’t really know who it is. Ok. It’s a female on the first verse. Her flow is pretty dope. I don’t know where she’s from, but she has kind of a weird accent. By weird I mean not Southern. That was a short ass verse. It wasn’t bad tho. The hook is cool I guess. It’s not anything special. This beat is dope. Killer Mike’s goin’ in. This honestly feels like a Killer Mike song with MNDR on the intro and hook. He only had one verse, but it was much longer than MNDR’s and he fucking killed it. “Principle and pistols on these pussies in Atlanta bro / Please man when I pull it in I pray the bullet damage ya / I’m a bad black bastard.” The beat’s really different. I don’t know how to describe it. I guess it’s kinda like alternative rock. Is that what you would call it? It sounds a lot more experimental & less melodic than most of the typical rock shit you here on the radio. It doesn’t really sounds like an experimental Hip Hop beat tho. Maybe it would sound less normal without MNDR. Idk. It’s dope tho. I fuck with this song. 4/5

Track 9: Born Bad (Popcaan Feat. Freddie Gibbs)

I really don’t know who Popcaan is. I only ever heard him on one song called Blocka by Pusha T. His contribution to that song was a hook. It was dope af. I’ve never really heard a song by Popcaan, so I don’t know what to expect. I don’t really think this is gonna be anything special, but I am looking forward to the Freddie Gibbs feature. I have no idea what the fuck he’s saying. It’s weird how a lot of people think that Trinidadian accents sound similar to Jamaican accents, but Jamaican accents are a lot harder to understand to me. As I said before, I’m not really into Dancehall like that, but this isn’t bad. It actually sounds pretty good. Holy shit. Freddie Gibbs sounds weird on this. He sounds good, but different. I don’t know why I’m surprised. I actually forgot he was on this song for a second tho. Imagine Freddie Gibbs on a Dancehall song. This song sounds exactly like what you’re expecting it to. This is so dope. I fuck with this song. This is dope af. I just wish I knew what the fuck he was sayin’. 5/5

Track 10: California (E-40 Feat. DâM-FunK & Ariel Pink)

This beat is fucking crazy. E-40 sounds fucking great over this beat. This is gonna sound weird, but that ad-lib he does where it sounds like a fat gay bustin’ a nut? It sounds great over this beat. He was the perfect choice for this song. Ariel Pink does a spoken wordish hook. It’s cool. Most of the songs on E-40’s last project sounded pretty uninspired, but he sounds like he’s excited to be doing shit again on this song. I’m assuming that DâM FunK just played on instrument an this song, because I didn’t hear any vocals from him. Ah fuck. That must be him on the piano at the end. It might not be tho. It sounded pretty good at first, but it feels out of place after the beat drops again. It doesn’t really fit over this beat. Coulda did without that part. The little outro he did was nice tho. I fuck with this song. It might’ve been dope af without that piano solo, but it’s just dope. 4/5

Track 11: Leave (Wavves)

Oh God. This is about to be some wack ass rock song. Nah. I ain’t feelin’ this. It’s not terrible, just not for me. If you like Rock music you might like this. I don’t know. I’m not feelin’ this personally. I can’t say it’s a bad song tho. I just can’t fuck with it. 2/5

Track 12: Fetti (Curren$y Feat. Freddie Gibbs)

Oh noooooooooooooooooooo. Not Curren$y again… Well at least Freddie Gibbs is on here again. This beat is dope af. Curren$y is just as boring as ever on here. If you’re a Curren$y fan, there’s no reason for you to not like this. As anyone could’ve predicted, he didn’t do anything new here. Damn. Freddie Gibbs is going the fuck in right now. Goddamn. He fucking killed that second verse. He’s tradin’ bars with Curren$y now. This is dope. This is dope af. I fuck with this shit. 5/5

Track 13: Wanderer (Little Dragon)

I have no idea who Little Dragon is. I heard him/her/them on a song by Big Boi called Thom Pettie. Shit wasn’t that good. I’m really not expecting much from this song because I don’t even think it’s Hip Hop. Holy fuck. This beat is fucking insane. Oh God. It’s a Pop song. Is that what this genre is? I’m not sure. It’s not bad enough to be Rock. Nah. I’m not feelin’ these vocals. Her voice is kinda annoyin’. I don’t feel like I’m in Cali when I listen to this song. I feel like I’m at a bad concert, surrounded by white women. That’s a bad thing for me. I’m not feelin’ this at all. I do like the beat tho. 2/5

Track 14: Bad News (Action Bronson Feat. Danny Brown)

I’ve heard this song before. The beat is fucking crazy. Danny Brown’s fuckin’ killin’ it. Action Bronson actually did his thing too. I liked his verse a lot. “She half Dominican & Trini.” He gets extra points for shoutin’ out Trinidadian girls. There’s no hook. Just a dope ass, dark soundin’ beat and dope verses from Danny Brown & Action Bronson. I fuck with this song. This is dope af. 5/5

Final Thoughts:

That was actually pretty good. The tracks that weren’t Hip Hop were pretty bad, but those songs aren’t made for me. If you like Rock music then you might like that Speedline Miracle Masterpiece song, but to me that shit is fucking horrible. The tracks that are Hip Hop songs are all above average. Except the one with A$AP Ferg. I ain’t feelin’ that shit. Most of these songs are Hip Hop, so if you were anticipating the other shit you may be a little disappointed. I tasted a bacon flavored lollypop today. Shit was nasty af. I also tasted a butter flavored lollypop. It was even worse than the bacon one. Who the fuck wanted that? Why would anybody want to taste that shit? This project felt like a Hip Hop album with a few random, out of place songs from other genres. Also, Freddie Gibbs was on here a lot. That’s not a bad thing. I just thought it was weird. Honestly, this album is probably only worth listening to if you really like Hip Hop. If you’re like me and you only really listen to Hip Hop, you’ll like the album. You’ll think the other songs are wack af, but you don’t have to listen to them. You can tell which ones aren’t Hip Hop from the first 10 seconds of them. This definitely would’ve been better without those songs tho. I fuck with this album. This album is dope.
