I’ve never listened to a full Aesop Rock project, and this is probably a really bad place to start since there are literally only two songs on here, but… I guess I really don’t give a shit to be honest. I fuck with Aesop Rock. I fuck with all of Rhymesayers Entertainment. Pretty much every good underground rapper is on Rhymesayers. I’ve heard a few singles and features from Aesop Rock and he always kills it, so I’m expecting this to be dope. This EP technically has 4 tracks, but the last two are just the instrumentals from the first two songs, so I’m only gonna be reviewing 2 songs. This project came out last year I think. It was either late last year or early this year. Or maybe it was early last year. I really don’t know. Okay, I just checked iTunes; it was this year. Nobody was asking for this review, but I don’t give a shit. I wanna hear it.
Track 1: Cat Food (Prod. Blockhead)
This beat is dope. Damn… “Food hoarder; communes with the flora.” Wow. That has to be the most complicated way of sayin’ “I got the munchies,” ever. What the fuck… This is so complicated… I have no idea what this guy is talking about right now. “Terrifying errant knights thwarting any motherfucking fork tongued-sport.” …What?? This guy is using words that I’ve never even heard before. What the fuck are “lipomas?” I feel like he just reads one page of a dictionary every night before he goes to sleep. This is ridiculous. I have absolutely no clue what this song is about. I think it’s dope tho. He has to be spittin’ right now, right? It sounds like he is… It’s almost like listening to a completely different language. This is like trying to understand a poem written by the first person to ever speak English ever. This is how I felt when I listened to Mural by Lupe Fiasco. I love shit like this even though I have no idea what I’m listening to. This shit makes me think. I almost never understand it, but I definitely like this a fuck of a lot more than a fuckin’ Chief Keef song. This is bananas. The way he fits all these big ass words (like “zero”) into his bars is amazing. If I was a rapper, hearing shit like this would make me give up. This is crazy. This beat is dope. I’m not blown away by it tho. It works. His flow is good, but it’s not amazing or anything. I feel like a fucking idiot when I hear this guy rap. I fucking love it tho. Aesop Rock killed this shit. The beat is cool. I fuck with this shit. 4/5
Track 2: Bug Zapper (Prod. Aesop Rock)
Yes. This beat is dope af. It’s real dark. I don’t know what the fuck those drums are, but they sound fucking great. “Vote off the elusiveness of truth & exultation / From the point of view of students labeled putrid little aphids by the beautiful and cryogenic stasis / Sadists.” God damnit. God damnit, Aes. What the fuck… Why? This is frustratingly good. This is so good that it pisses me off because I feel like a fucking idiot for not knowing what the fuck this is about. It’s so dope. Once I figure out what this shit is about in like 10 years, it’ll hopefully be even doper to me. I don’t know what’s happening right now. It’s definitely good tho. The beat is dope af. Aes killed the verses, and the hook was dope too. I fuck with this shit. This is dope af. 5/5
Final Thoughts:
That was dope af. I guess there wasn’t a lot of room for error, but that’s a good thing. This project is definitely worth listening to. At least stream it to see if you like it. If you for whatever reason don’t like Aesop Rock as a rapper (why??), he gave you the beats as the last two tracks. Aesop Rock is clearly one of the most talented rappers ever. I can’t think of anyone else who really raps like this. Nobody uses random big ass words like this. The production isn’t the greatest shit I’ve ever heard before, but it’s dope. Even if you don’t like the beats, Aesop Rock is more than enough to keep this shit interesting. It’s a good ass project. I definitely fuck with this shit. This is dope af.
