Mixtape Review | Desiigner – New English

This mixtape was released on June 26th this year. Desiigner’s fame is honestly amazing to me. Anytime this guy does anything people wanna know about it. Remember that XXL Freshman Freestyle review I did a few days ago? That became my most viewed article ever after just a few hours. It’s still getting way more views than anything else I’ve posted. It’s amazing how famous this guy is. Honestly, I doubt that I’m gonna like this mixtape, but at the same time… I like Desiigner. Is he a good rapper? Absofuckinglutely not. I just can’t help but be happy for him tho. Every time I see him he just looks so fucking happy to be himself. I’m assuming he came from a rough neighborhood. I’ve never seen anyone be so happy to have one hit song. Even if his music is pure fucking trash he just seems like a likable person. Well, actually I could see him getting annoying REAL fuckin’ quick. But his happiness is contagious for me, and I don’t even really know why. His Freshman Freestyle was straight balls, but hopefully he has some entertaining music on here. I actually like Panda, so maybe he can shit out another catchy song like that.

Track 1: Intro

I just realized that I like Desiigner a lot more than Future. I don’t even know why. Y’all know I fucking hate Future, but Desiigner doesn’t really bother me that much. Maybe it’s because he’s a bit more hungry than Future. Well, I can’t even say that I like him more than Future because I haven’t heard any songs from him aside from Panda. Maybe that’s why. I guess I just haven’t dismissed him like I always do Future. This track is an instrumental intro. There weren’t any production credits listed for this track on the Tidal page, but this mixtape was executive produced by Zana Ray, Mike Dean & Steven Victor, so I’m just gonna assume that they’re the ones who made this. It sounds like the intro to a fuckin’ Disney movie. It’s dope af. It’s not an actual song tho, so I’m not gonna rate it.

Track 2: Caliber (Prod. NickFRSH)

Oh… The way the intro transitions into this song is pretty disappointing. That’s not really a big deal tho. This beat is dope. Wow. This fool really sounds like Future. There’s a LOT of autotune on his voice. I liked the buildup for the hook, but the hook itself isn’t doin’ nothin’ for me. “Caliber, caliber, caliber.” First panda, then Timmy Turner, now caliber… If every song is like this I don’t know if I’ll be able to make it through this tape. This sounds like a parody. This sounds like No Words by Hopsin. The first verse was terrible. You know how washed up old people are always talkin’ about how Hip Hop is trash these days? This song is exactly what they’re talking about. I’d love to see an old person’s reaction to this. Actually, that’s not true at all. I don’t give a shit what old people have to say about this. I’m not feelin’ this song. It has pretty much the exact same structure as Panda. A long ass hook where he repeats the same word over and over again, and then a single verse. This isn’t good tho. He doesn’t need to be usin’ that much autotune. The beat was cool, but everything else about this song is horrible. This song is fucking awful. 1/5

Track 3: Make It Out (Prod. Mekado)

Wow. This is crazy. He obviously heard about the Future comparisons. He sounds nothing like him on this song. It sounds like he’s really straining his voice tho. It’s making MY throat hurt just listening this fool. It’s like someone has him in a chokehold while he’s rapping. Damn… This is really weird, but… I’m actually enjoying this song… I’m shocked… Y’all might think I’m joking, but I seriously did not expect to like this song. I like his delivery tho. The hook lasts way too long, but once the actual verse starts his flow is honestly dope af. Y’all probably didn’t know this, but I actually DO listen to Trap music sometimes, and I actually think this guy is doing it really well on this song in particular. His delivery is insanely aggressive, and he has a ridiculous amount of energy, which is the most important thing when it comes to Trap music. The lyrics aren’t even that bad. I mean, they aren’t good, but they aren’t any worse than you’d expect from a Trap artist. I… I can’t believe it. I’m so fucking stunned right now. I cannot believe I like another Desiigner song. I didn’t expect him to make something like this. It’s dope. It’s REALLY dope. I can’t quite call it dope af because that hook lasts WAY too long and there’s only one verse, but I still think he put together a pretty good song here. I fuck with this song. This is dope. 4/5

Track 4: Shooters (Prod. Mekado)

Man, every time I listen to Desiigner I become more & more shocked. He really caught me off guard with that previous track. Hopefully he can do it again. This one’s starting now. Fuck… This beat was SOOO close to being dope. Something about the bass just sounds off tho. It doesn’t come in at the right moment. It never really feels like the beat drops. He really doesn’t sound like Future on this one. I mean, he KINDA does, but it’s not really hard to tell that this is Desiigner. This song suffers from the same shit that all of his songs have suffered from; the hook lasts way too long. Woah, what the fuck? This track ends before Desiigner’s even done. Lmao who mixed this shit? I don’t know about this one. I think this really could’ve been a better song if the percussion hit a little harder and he switched his flow up a bit more. I don’t think this song is terrible, but nah. I’m not feelin’ it. This is wack to me. 2/5

Track 5: Monsta & Villains (Prod. YsOnnaTrack)

I think this is just gonna be an interlude because this track is only 38 seconds long. Hold up, why is the next track called Interlude 1? Wait a minute… No… THIS FOOL MADE A 38 SECOND LONG SONG? Oh my fucking God, man. This guy’s just throwin’ nonstop curveballs, huh? Wow. The longest song on this tape so far is two minutes & fifty seconds. Alright, this one’s starting. OH SHIT. This beat is fucking incredible. WHAT THE FUCK? This song ends so abruptly. I should’ve expected that. I don’t even know how to rate this. I really liked what I heard, but… lmao… I just can’t enjoy this song. It’s too short. Do I even need to tell y’all that? Maybe this is just a preview, and the full version will be on his album. I hope that’s the case because this beat sounded dope as hell. Fuck… How do I rate this shit? I guess I’ll just say it’s alright. I enjoyed what I heard, but there’s no reason for me to not delete this track. 3/5

Track 6: Interlude 1 (Prod. Hal Ritson & Richard Adlam)

This is another instrumental track, just like the intro. It’s dope af. You know what’s weird? All of the instrumental tracks have been really smooth, more traditional sounding Hip Hop beats. I guess it’s supposed to be a break from the over the top Trap shit that he used for the actual songs.

Track 7: Talk Regardless (Prod. Richie Souf)

Oh. I guess I stand corrected. This is the same beat that the interlude had. Why are there different production credits for this track? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS. I swear the more music I hear from this guy, the more confused I get. That interlude was the definition of filler. There was absolutely no reason for that to have it’s own track. It should’ve just been at the beginning of this one. Oh shit… This really IS an over the top Trap beat. I don’t know why I wasn’t expecting the beat to drop like that. I guess I have to take back everything I just said. This beat is dope af. This hook is annoying as fuck. Okay, the first verse just ended, and I could barely understand any of the shit this fool said. What the fuck is this motherfucker saying? Jesus Christ. Oh my fucking God both of these verses are horrific. I can’t believe how bad this second verse is. Jesus Christ. This is awful. Lmao. I think it’s gonna be hard for y’all to understand this review without hearing it for yourselves. Okay, lemme try to describe what’s happening here. Desiigner kinda sounds like a crackhead who got his tongue cut out, and then got shot with a tranquilizer dart. That’s really the best way for me to describe it. This song is wack af. 1/5

Track 8: Roll Wit Me (Prod. Rico Beats)

What is he saying? He sounds like Future again. He seriously sounds exactly like Future. I cannot understand a single word. Oh my God… How fucking long is this hook? The hook ended, and then he was like “YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH,” and then he started sayin’ the hook again. Is this some kinda joke? Am I being trolled? What the fuck is this?? Oh my God. Nah. Nah, I can’t fuck with this one. This is terrible. I can’t fuck with this shit. This is wack af to me. 1/5

Track 9: Interlude 2 (Prod. Hal Ritson & Richard Adlam)

I actually think these smoother, more chill interludes do a great job breaking up the crazy shit on the actual songs. I already said that during the first interlude tho. This instrumental in particular is dope af. This beat is fucking incredible honestly.

Track 10: Da Day (Prod. Mekado & Mike Dean)

Who the fuck is this on the hook? What? He’s on the first verse too. WHO? Oh. I just looked it up. Apparently this song has an uncredited feature from someone named Milly.CTD. I actually think he sounds pretty good on this track. His flow was pretty underwhelming tho. I’m not really feelin’ his verse. Or the hook. Good fucking lord. This verse from Desiigner is fucking terrible. Seriously, this verse is fucking dogshit. His voice sounds SO fucking bad. He sounds exactly like Future. This is so fucking bad. Uh oh… The beat just switched up. Damn. This new beat is dope af. Woah, what the fuck? Now this motherfucker’s stealin’ OG Maco’s thing? He’s yelling Maco’s “YEAYEAYUGH” ad-lib in the background. I’m probably the only person who’ll ever notice that tho. I would be shocked if that was intentional. Does he even know who OG Maco is? Probably not. What the fuck? Did this Milly.CTD guy just spit the same fucking verse he spit earlier? I don’t believe this shit man… I like the faster pace of this second half of the song, but that’s pretty much the only positive thing I can say. The only reason I’m not given this fucking wack ass bullshit a 0 is because I liked the second beat. This is wack af tho. 1/5

Track 11: Jet Feat. Pusha T (Prod. IGNORVNCE)

I don’t even think Pusha T can save this project… It’s starting now. Jesus, man. Desiigner’s voice sounds awful. Mainly because he sounds exactly like Future on this one. Wow. Pusha T’s normal voice sounds fucking heavenly compared to Desiigner’s. Pusha T’s verse at the beginning was dope. I’ve heard better shit from him tho. He easily had the best verse on the whole mixtape, and I’m 100% sure that’s not gonna change by the time I’m done listening. I’ll bet a million dollars that I won’t hear a better verse than that on this mixtape. If Desiigner spits a better verse than that, I’ll twerk. This hook is so bad. Jesus Christ. This is such a bad song. The beat’s not even that good. No, man. No. This is bad. This is really bad. Is this worse than Lil Uzi Vert Vs. The World? Nah, I don’t think it’s that bad yet. There wasn’t a single song on that mixtape that I liked. I already know that there are two songs on this one that I like. This song right here is wack tho. I can’t fuck with this one. 2/5

Track 12: Overnight (Prod. Mike Dean)

This beat is dope af. This sounds like fuckin’ Travi$ Scott now. Mainly because of the production and the overuse of autotune. The melody is catchy enough I guess. You know what? I… I think I might actually like this song. Are the lyrics bad? Yes. I still like the song tho. The beat is dope af, and I actually like the melody that Desiigner’s singing. He’s not really singing it that well, but it’s tolerable for me personally. I kinda fuck with this song. I’m hesitant to call this “dope,” but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it sonically. 4/5

Track 13: Zombie Walk Feat. King Savage (Prod. The Shell God)

Zombie Walk.jpg

If I’m not mistaken, this was the first song Desiigner ever released, and the only song of his to be released before Panda. This beat is dope. Desiigner’s singing with autotune on the first verse, and he never really switches anything up. The melody gets old real quick. The hook is actually dope tho. I fuck with the hook. I wasn’t feelin’ King Savage’s verse. Nah. I’m not feelin’ this one. The hook was dope, and the beat was hot. That’s it tho. This isn’t a good song. I don’t think it’s that bad tho. Especially compared to the other songs. LMAO, I just saw a comment that said that “King Savage” sounds like someone’s gamertag. 3/5

Track 14: Panda (Prod. Menace)

Panda

Alright, where do I begin with this one? I guess I KINDA already talked about it when I reviewed Kanye’s version of it. This song is dope af tho. I really like this one. I don’t really have anything to say about it. The beat’s dope af, the hook’s dope af, and the verse is fine. I guess there hasn’t really been an official remix of this song yet has there? Well, there is the Kanye one I guess… The music video was kinda disappointing. He loses points for dabbing so much. There’s a scene where he’s jackin’ somebody’s car. If there were more scenes like that in the music video it would be dope af. There aren’t tho. Anyway, the song’s dope af. I think I prefer the Kanye version tho. I know that’s weird since I gave that version a 4 and I’m giving this one a 5, but compared to Kanye’s other shit it is a 4. Compared the Desiigner’s other shit, this is the best shit I’ve ever heard. 5/5

Final Thoughts:

This mixtape is REALLY bad. It’s awful. I still had a really fun time reviewing it tho. I never really knew what to expect. When I heard Make It Out I thought I was actually gonna enjoy this mixtape, but nah. It’s not good. It doesn’t even really feel like a complete project. You can tell just by listening to it that he hasn’t been rapping for a long time. This mixtape sounds like it was made in 2 hours. It probably took me longer to write this review than it did for him to make this shit. I do think that the way he broke this shit up with the interludes was surprisingly smart tho. I don’t know if that was his idea or not, but either way it was smart. This is a bad Trap mixtape. There’s plenty of good Trap music out there. Don’t waste your time on this one unless you’re really curious. Well, I haven’t exactly been a fan of the newer Trap shit that’s been coming out recently. If you like that fucking garbage ass wack ass trash Future shit, then you might like this maybe. I think this shit is wack tho.
