Mixtape Review | Young Thug – Slime Season

This mixtape was released on September 16th last year. This is another project that’s been on my schedule for a long ass time. If you’ve read my other two Young Thug reviews, you’ll know that I really fucking hated him A LOT at first. By the time I got to Slime Season 3, I’d learned to accept his place in Hip Hop. He’s a terrible rapper who occasionally releases a bizarrely catchy song. I’m pretty sure I said this in my review of Slime Season 3, but it’s so true that I need to remind yall; I hate a lot of Young Thug’s music, but whenever he drops something that I kinda like, I find myself replaying the shit over and over again. In the rare cases where he actually drops a decent song, the replay value is off the charts for whatever reason. I’ve heard a very small selection of some of the songs on this project, and I wasn’t in love with all of them, but if I’m remembering correctly, some of them actually caught my ear. I’m expecting this to be… Well, I’m honestly still expecting this to be really fucking bad, but I’m sure there’s at least one song on this mixtape that I’ll like.

Track 1: Take Kare Feat. Lil Wayne (Prod. London On Tha Track)

Take Kare.jpg

This song was originally released all the way back when Young Thug was getting really hot in late 2014. It came out before Young Thug & Lil Wayne’s beef even started. What ever happened with that? Does Wayne still hate Young Thug? I remember at one point he said something like “I love him” when he was talking about Young Thug, but then I think he had some negative shit to say about him again. I can’t really remember. Fuck it; it doesn’t matter. Does anyone really care about that beef anymore? I apparently do since I’m still talking about it for some reason. Anyway, I remember hearing this and being really underwhelmed. Hopefully I don’t feel the same way this time. Damn. This song was originally released before I even started this website. It’s starting now. Okay, I definitely fuck with this dark production. The beat is dope af. The first verse was fucking terrible. The only coherent punchline was “I’m in her mouth just like Colgate,” which just isn’t a good line… The hook is pretty underwhelming. Jesus. It’s really absurd how good this beat is for an artist like Young Thug. What a waste. I kinda liked Thug’s aggressive delivery on the second verse. Wow. This is really bad. Lmao. Wayne’s verse was wack af. It was only slightly better than Young Thug’s verses due to his more substantial flow. It really wasn’t that much better than Young Thug’s shit lyrically tho… “No chaser for my girl though / She go harder than me on occasion / Gettin’ wasted with my girl / Then we 69 ’til we need ventilation.” Of course the track with Wayne had to be a “love” song. Nah. I’m not feelin’ this bullshit. The only reason I’m not giving this fucking wack ass bullshit a 1 is because of the superb production from London On Tha Track. The beat was completely ruined by Young Thug & Wayne moaning about their love interests with autotune over their voices. I can’t do this one. This shit is fucking wack. 2/5

Track 2: Quarterback Feat. Quavo, Offset & PeeWee Longway (Prod. Sonny Digital)

Of course he only gets features from the two Migos whom I DON’T like. It’s starting now. This beat is pretty weak. The production has been surprisingly dark so far. Almost like Travi$ Scott’s production. This beat’s really basic tho. The first verse from Young Thug was awful. This is even worse than Take Kare. Take Kare seems amazing compared to this shit. Quavo’s verse was average for him. It was wack by normal standards. It was great compared to Young Thug’s verse. I’m not feelin’ this hook. Offset definitely had the best verse so far. It started off pretty similar to Quavo’s verse, but he stepped his flow up for the last few bars. This beat is getting really old… PeeWee’s verse was wack. What was even the point of having all these features? None of them added anything. This song is awful. I don’t like a single thing about this song. This shit is wack af to me. 1/5

Track 3: Rarri Feat. Young Ralph (Prod. Southside)

This beat is dope. I’m not feelin’ the hook tho. Young Thug’s delivery is just annoying as hell. What the fuck am I listening to? Lmao listen to this fool. He sounds fucking insane. Oh shit. It actually sounds a little better once those background vocals come in. It doesn’t really fit over this aggressive beat tho. Woah. Young Ralph’s voice sounds deep as hell compared to Young Thug. That’s kind of a nice contrast. His actual verse wasn’t good tho. This song is annoying as hell. This loud ass beat along with Thug’s obnoxious delivery is just too much for me. I’m not feelin’ this shit. This is wack af. 1/5

Track 4: Stunna (Prod. Isaac Flame)

Stunna

This tape is honestly a little worse than I had anticipated… It’s still far from over tho. Maybe it’ll pick up after the first few tracks. This one’s starting now. This beat is dope. Young Thug’s been using this same flow for the past three songs. The hook is wack. HAHAHA. Nah. Well, I gotta be honest; this is definitely the most entertaining track on the tape so far in my opinion. The lyrics are dumb as hell, but they’re makin’ me laugh. His flow on the first verse was actually kinda dope. The second verse was awful. “I ain’t even crippin’ but I got a mothafuckin’ clue and it’s blue.” Nah. I don’t know if I should say this is wack or mediocre. I guess it wasn’t that bad. It’s definitely not a good song, but I can tolerate it. It’s okay. 3/5

Track 5: Best Friend (Prod. Ricky Racks & Young Shad)

Best Friend.jpg

I’ve been told by an admittedly unreliable source that this is Young Thug’s best song. I’m pretty sure this is one of his best selling singles—it went platinum—so I’m expecting this to at least be better than everything else I’ve heard so far. It’s starting now. This beat is dope af. This… Nah. I’m not feelin’ this hook. The hook is wack. Wow. This is pretty goddamn disappointing. Both of the verses are terrible—”Take them boys to school, swagonometry.“—and the hook is very underwhelming. The only thing I really like about this song is the production. Yes, it IS better than most of the other shit on this tape so far, but it’s still not good. It’s just less awful. This definitely isn’t Young Thug’s best song. This isn’t even the best beat he’s rapped over. I can’t believe how quickly everyone forgot about Old English. I’m not really feelin’ this song. I don’t think it’s super wack or anything. It’s just not good. This is average at best for me personally. The music video was… Not good… 3/5

Track 6: Power (Prod. London On Tha Track)

Power

I think I’ve heard this one before. This hook is actually dope af. It’s really catchy. The beat from London On Tha Track is great. “She sucked like eight dicks; I call her Octagon.” The first verse wasn’t good lyrically, but I can tolerate it sonically. Same goes for the second verse. I actually like this one. I don’t know if I’m comfortable calling it a “good” song, but I enjoyed it personally. This is the kinda shit I like from Young Thug. Yes, the lyrics are terrible. It’s catchy as hell tho. I fuck with this song. This is dope to me. Only sonically tho. Wow. The effects in this music video are atrocious. Whatever. I still fuck with the song. 4/5

Track 7: Calling Your Name (Prod. Goose)

Calling Your Name

HAHAHA. Oh my fuckin’ gawd. NO HE DIDN’T! HAHAHA. This fool sampled ELLIE GOULDING, and he’s tryna sing along with her, and he’s making his voice go really high just liker her. It’s actually kinda depressing. The beat isn’t bad, but I just can’t take it seriously when Thug is singing over it like this. Well, he only did it during the intro… HAHAHA. How can you hear this shit and not laugh your fuckin’ ass off? Listen to this fool yelling on the second verse. He sounds like a fucking idiot. HAHAHA. Nah. I’m not feelin’ this one. I guess it’s not that bad of a song compared to the other shit on this tape, but I can’t fuck with it. The beat was cool. That’s really the only positive thing I can say about this song. This shit is wack to me. 2/5

Track 8: No Way (Prod. London On Tha Track)

This beat’s dope. I actually kinda like this hook. He sounds good singin’ this shit. The first verse was pretty bad. The second verse was really bad too, but… I still kinda like this song. I like it for pretty much the same reasons that I like Power. I can fuck with this sonically. The hook is catchy. Lyrically, I wouldn’t think twice about giving this shit a 1. The production is great tho, and I like the way he sounds on this. I like this song. This is dope to me. Again, I only like this sonically. 4/5

Track 9: Mine (Prod. Allen Ritter)

I know I said that this tape was worse than I was expecting it to be a little earlier, but now it’s way better than I was expecting it to be. I wasn’t expecting to like two whole songs this close to each other. Hopefully he can keep that shit up. I doubt it tho… This beat is pretty dope. Young Thug’s flow on this first verse is kinda cool. The lyrics obviously aren’t good. It’s a lot of stuff like this: “She a shark; she like a jaws, nigga / Your bitch says she wants a tall nigga / You are one midget; you too small, nigga / She suck my dick, and rub my balls, nigga.” The hook’s alright. The second verse wasn’t good. I don’t know about this one. I kinda liked the hook, and the beat was cool… It’s not even that bad of a song. It just isn’t very good. I don’t hate this song like a lot of the other tracks, but I still don’t think I’d ever have the desire to listen to it again. It’s alright I guess. 3/5

Track 10: Freaky (Prod. WondaGurl & Eestbound)

What the hell? This beat sounded like it was gonna be dope at first, but it didn’t really go in the direction that I wanted it to when it dropped. I’m not feelin’ it. This hook is wack. The first verse was absolutely terrible. “Baby want to touch my milk like she cowin’.” What the fuck does that even mean? Nah. I’m not feelin’ this one. The second verse is fucking awful. “Even if you had Erykah Ba, you couldn’t du us.” Oh my gawd. This is so fucking bad. Nah. Nah. This is awful. I didn’t even really like the production behind this track. This song is wack af. 1/5

Track 11: Be Me See Me (Prod. Metro Boomin’)

This hook is awful. The beat’s dope af tho. This is fucking awful. Okay, I’m starting to get real tired of this shit. This is so bad. I just listened to the whole song. I don’t have anything interesting to say. It’s just not a good song. In fact, it’s the opposite of that. This is fucking awful. Everything about this song aside from the production is awful. This shit is wack. The only reason I’m not giving it a 1 is because Metro Boomin’ did a good job. This shit is still wack tho. 2/5

Track 12: Overdosin’ (Prod. Ricky Racks)

This beat is kinda dope. This hook is wack tho. Oh my God. I’m starting to get pissed off. Maybe it’s because I’m up at 1 AM listening to awful music. I should probably go to sleep after this song. The first verse was awful. This beat was cool at first, but it gets old real quick. What else do I have to say? Y’all can pretty much predict what I’m gonna think if the hook isn’t catchy. If I don’t like the hook, there’s pretty much no chance of me liking the song. This shit is wack af. I can’t fuck with this one. 1/5

Track 13: Again (Prod. London On Tha Track)

Again.png

Gucci Mane is on this song, but he isn’t credited in the tracklist. Apparently his verse is ripped straight from the intro to his Trap House 4 album. His verse was alright. It was definitely nice to hear some coherent bars even if they weren’t actually good. Young Thug’s verse wasn’t good, but I actually kinda fuck with the hook. It’s pretty catchy. The beat from London On Tha Track is dope. I don’t really like this song, but it’s far better than most of the other shit on this tape so far. It’s alright. The music video was wack tho. 3/5

Track 14: That’s All (Prod. Goose)

Go to church like Mase.” I can’t imagine Young Thug in church. It would be VERY entertaining to hear him sing a Gospel song tho. Woah… What the fuck? How is his voice so low on this hook? It’s dope af. He actually sounds really good singing this hook. “I wanna clean it with Lysol.” The lyrics are definitely confusing, but sonically this is great so far. I fuck with this beat. It sounds a little Poppy, but I don’t really give a shit. It’s dope af compared to the other shit on this tape. Wow. This is actually really entertaining. This is definitely the best song on the tape so far. I think he even sounds good on the verses. Is… Is this song dope af? I think it might be… For a Young Thug song at least. I actually really like this one. It’s catchy as hell. Why wasn’t this a single? I could see this doing really well on the radio. This is dope af to me. I really enjoyed this one. 5/5

Track 15: UDiggWhatI’mSayin’ (Prod. Kip Hilson)

This beat kinda sounds like something DJ Mustard would produce. It’s a little less basic than the average DJ Mustard beat tho. I actually kinda fuck with it. I’m not feelin’ this song tho. The hook just isn’t really doin’ it for me, and of course the verses are terrible. I don’t think this is as bad as a lot of the other shit on this tape, but it’s still pretty goddamn bad. I’m not fuckin’ with this shit. This is wack to me. 2/5

Track 16: Draw Down (Prod. London On Tha Track)

Holy fuck this is one long ass mixtape. This beat is really dope. The hook’s okay I guess. The first verse wasn’t good. “I know you a freak / Yeah, you the skeet meat.” Man, no. This isn’t good. I’m so ready for this tape to be over. I can’t fuck with this one. The beat was cool, but other than that I’m not feelin’ this one. This shit is wack to me. 2/5

Track 17: Wood Would (Prod. Wheezy)

Okay, only two more songs. Here we go. It’s starting now. This beat is dope. The hook is wack. I’m definitely not feelin’ this first verse. “My fuckin’ weed smell like a turd.” Is that how you spell “turd?” I don’t think I’ve ever had to spell that word. I’m pretty much over this whole tape man. I don’t even wanna listen to this shit… Okay, it just ended. I gotta be honest; I kinda stopped paying attention. I didn’t really need to pay attention tho. This shit isn’t good. It’s not the worst song on this tape, but I can’t fuck with it. The only good thing about this song is the beat, and even that gets old after a while. This shit is wack to me. 2/5

Track 18: Wanna Be Me (Prod. London On Tha Track)

This beat is dope. This intro is fucking horrible tho. Why does Young Thug have autotune on his voice? It’s not like he really needs it… He sounds a lot like Wayne on this first verse. Wayne’s flow isn’t usually this weak tho. What the fuck is this shit? This is one of the wackest songs on the whole tape. What the hell is he doing? This hook is so bad. At least on the other tracks his singing wasn’t off key. He sounds really fuckin’ bad on this one tho. This is so fucking bad. Nah. I can’t stand this one. This is fucking horrible. He sounded really bad on this track. This shit is wack af. 1/5

Final Thoughts:

Oh my God. It’s over. It’s finally over. Nah. This shit is wack. Ya know, I think I really forgot just how bad Young Thug’s music is. Honestly, this is far from the worst project I’ve ever heard, but the fact that it’s so long just makes it so much harder to tolerate. He put way too many tracks on this bitch. He could’ve narrowed it down to like 10 tracks. It still wouldn’t have been good, but it would’ve been way better than what he actually gave us. Young Thug just needs to slow down. He’s shitting these songs out like they’re trash. Well, most of them ARE trash, but they wouldn’t be if he spent more time on them. Quality over quantity. It doesn’t really seem like he’s improving at all either. I mean, I think I liked this more than The Barter VI, but Slime Season 3 wasn’t much better than this one. I guess I’ll have to see how Slime Season 2 compares to this other stuff, but I’m not looking forward to it after this. This shit right here was wack. I’m not fuckin’ with this tape.
