This album was released on May 6th in 2014. I’m just really nervous right now. I’m nervous that this album will be as boring as The Family Sign. I’m afraid that I won’t like the production. Nate Collis & Erick Anderson were still involved with this album, so I don’t know how this one’s gonna turn out. There are a shit load of music videos for this album by the way. Also it’s too long. 20 tracks is way too long. Anyway, I uh… I’m not gonna try to predict what I’m gonna think of this album after what happened with The Family Sign. I’m just gonna start listening and see what happens. Every track is produced by Ant. He was unfortunately accompanied by Nate Collis & Erick Anderson.

Track 1: Camera Thief

I guess it was kinda unfair for me to say that this album is too long when the standard edition is only 15 tracks. Anyway, this beat is pretty dope. The first verse was cool.”I still kick it with angels / The difference is instead of the bar I’m at my kitchen table.” I guess it’s time to accept that Slug is a grown ass man with a family. Of course he’s not gonna be rapping about getting drunk and thirstin’ over random women in a bar. Slug’s flow is pretty underwhelming. I’m used to it at this point. I think the last album where he was really gonna impress anyone with his flow was You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having. There’s no hook. That’s probably a good thing. The song just ended. It’s pretty good. I’m not super amazed or anything, but I enjoyed the song. This is dope to me. 4/5

Track 2: Arthur’s Song

This beat is cool. This song is just one long ass verse. Slug’s rapping about alcoholism. You know, I think one of the main problems I have with Atmosphere’s music is how seriously they take themselves. Every song sounds super emotional. We don’t get songs like Sep Seven Game Show Theme or I Wish Those Cats At Fobia Would Give Me Some Free Shoes anymore. Sorry. I’m getting off topic. This song isn’t really doin’ anything for me. It’s not really a bad song, but it was just really boring for me. It’s decent tho. 3/5

Track 3: The World Might Not Live Through The Night

This beat isn’t bad. UUuuuuugh… No. Nah, I’m not feelin’ this. The first verse was alright I guess, but this hook is pretty fuckin’ wack. Jesus… What the fuck happened to Atmosphere, man? Goddamn… This is corny… “Give no fucks, kiss no butts.” Uugh… Noooo. This is so fucking depressing to listen to for me… Slug’s delivery and flow just sound so… I don’t know if “lazy” is the word I should use… You can tell he’s not tryin’ to prove himself anymore. He’s just not hungry anymore. I’m not feelin’ this song. This is making me sad. 2/5

Track 4: Star Shaped Heart

This beat is decent. I’d probably say it was dope if Slug was killin’ it. He’s just not tho. He’s rapping with the same boring flow and delivery that he’s been using for the past 3 albums. Dude, FUCK. Why am I already so bored?? This is only the fourth song… I can’t believe I’ve got 16 more tracks of this shit to listen to. This is just so unbelievably disappointing. Damn. I’ve been listening to a lot of disappointing shit this year, like Coloring Book & Blade Of The Ronin… I don’t think this song is as bad as the previous track, but… I just don’t like it. This shit is boring to me. I’m not feelin’ it. 2/5

Track 5: I Love You Like A Brother

I actually fuck with this beat. The first verse was cool. The hook isn’t bad. The second verse was cool I guess. Jesus fucking Christ. I really don’t know what to think about this shit. I don’t like this song, but it’s not even bad. It’s just not my cup of tea. I don’t know what the hell happened man… This is super disappointing. This isn’t what I want from Atmosphere. This isn’t what I want from anyone. This song is probably above average objectively, but I personally don’t really like it. It’s okay I guess… 3/5

Track 6: Southsiders

This beat is alright I guess. The first verse was decent. This track definitely has more energy than anything else on this album. The hook is nothing special. The second verse was cool I guess. Uuugh. I’m not enjoying this album. This song isn’t bad, but it did absolutely nothing for me. It’s decent tho. 3/5

Track 7: Bitter

Bitter

This beat is cool. Oh no… No, man. I’m really not feelin’ Slug’s melodic delivery on this… It sounds bad… This isn’t good. I guess the hook is fine, but goddamn. These verses are just not good… This doesn’t even sound like Hip Hop… I mean, it IS Hip Hop because Slug’s still rapping, but… This doesn’t sound like a Hip Hop instrumental. You know what this reminds me of? What’s that band called? They have a popular single out right now… Fuck. I don’t know what the song’s called. The band’s called 21 Pilots I think. Or Twenty One Pilots. Whatever. This kinda reminds me of that single they have. I’m not feelin’ this. This is wack to me. 2/5

Track 8: Mrs. Interpret

This beat is actually really dope. Whoever this lady singing in French is on the intro has REALLY bad pronunciation. I think she’s trying to say “I’m hungry / I’m thirsty / I need you.” She said something else, but I couldn’t understand. Anyway, that’s what she was TRYING to say. She really ended up saying “I hungry / I thirsty / I drink say” tho. The word “drink” is in the form of a noun too, so she REALLY fucked up… It’s bothering me way more than it should. The production is pretty much the only thing that I like about this song since I don’t like love songs. This is way too sappy for me. “Could you please repeat your last few words? / The most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard / But you might as well have a mouth full of baby birds.” Nah. I’m not feelin’ the first verse. Oh God. They used the singing lady as the hook. I thought that was just an intro… Nah… I’m not feelin’ the hook. This is probably my least favorite song on the whole album so far. I don’t know. It’s between this song and the previous track. Nah. I’m not feelin’ this bullshit. This is wack to me. 2/5

Track 9: Fortunate

I’m not feelin’ this beat. The first verse was fine I guess. This song just isn’t really doin’ anything for me. It’s hard for me to care about what Slug is actually saying when the production and his flow & delivery are so fucking boring… Fuck, man. No. I’m not feelin’ this one. This shit is boring as fuck. 2/5

Track 10: Kanye West

Kanye West

I’ve seen Slug talk a lot about this song in interviews. He uses Kanye West’s name as an adjective for someone who loves something too much. It’s starting now. I actually kinda fuck with this beat. This hook isn’t too bad I guess. The first verse was cool. The second verse wasn’t bad… I don’t know man. I like the beat and the single art, but that’s pretty much it. I haven’t watched any of the music videos for this album by the way. I’m just not interested… This song was alright. I’d be lying if I said I’d wanna hear it again in the future tho. 3/5

Track 11: We Ain’t Gonna Die Today

Guys, I’m so fuckin’ bored right now. I’ve listened to 50 seconds of this song so far, and I think I’m about to fall asleep. I feel like the past three Atmosphere albums have all been recycling the same 5 beats. I don’t even have anything different to say about this track. It’s just not good. It’s super decent. I’m bored as SHIT right now. This is wack to me. 2/5

Track 12: My Lady Got Two Men

I haven’t been this bored in a long ass time. I actually like this beat tho. I wasn’t feelin’ the first verse. It sounds like Slug’s rapping about being in the “friendzone.” He’s thankfully not being an entitled douche about it tho. He’s not calling the girl an idiot for not being with him. He’s just talking about how he feels about it personally. It doesn’t interest me at all tho. Oh shit… Maybe I spoke too soon. “It’s obvious that I’m better than him / If you got any sense you won’t settle for him.” This is bad… Oh God. “I feel like a doctor / I got a lot of patience.” Jesus. What’s with the corny struggle bars? This kinda reminds me of the way Vast Aire raps these days. He just sounds washed up. It’s like he doesn’t even care anymore. It sounds like he’s rapping for money instead of fun. Nah. I’m not feelin’ this song. This is wack to me. The beat was kinda cool tho. 2/5

Track 13: Flicker

This is bad. I’ve only liked the first song so far, and that song wasn’t even that great… I’m not feelin’ this beat. I’m not feelin’ the female vocals on the hook. The first verse was cool I guess. This track is obviously about Eyedea. It’s pretty sad stuff, and I appreciate what Slug was tryin’ to do with this song, but I can’t fuck with this shit personally. This shit is REALLY sad… The lyrics are cool, but I’m not feelin’ anything else about this. The hook is wack; same goes for the beat. I’m not feelin’ this one. It’s wack to me. 2/5

Track 14: January On Lake Street

This beat is actually really dope so far. Damn. I actually liked the first verse too. Slug actually sounded pretty good on this one. I wasn’t in love with the direction in which the beat went when the percussion finally came in, but it’s still good. There’s thankfully no hook. There’s just a beat break between the two verses. The second verse was dope too. Wow. I like this song. Thank God. It’s a miracle. I’m not being sarcastic right now; I really wasn’t expecting to like another song on this album. This was a pleasant surprise. I fuck with this track. This is dope to me. 4/5

Track 15: Let Me Know That You Know What You Want Now

Oh no… I’m not feelin’ this beat. I really wasn’t feelin’ that sample at the beginning of the track either. Oh my fuck. They used the sample for the hook. HELL no. This shit is mad corny. I wasn’t feelin’ the first verse. I just finished the song. It’s not good. This is easily the wackest song on the album so far. Honestly this might actually be the wackest Atmosphere song I’ve ever heard. I REALLY don’t like this shit. It’s wack af to me. 1/5

Track 16: She Don’t Know Why She Love It

This is the first bonus track from the deluxe edition of this album. Damn. I can’t believe they ended the standard version with that previous song. Jesus… Anyway, this beat is dope af. I don’t know why the hell they saved this for the deluxe edition ’cause this beat is awesome to me. The first verse was cool. This track is pretty aggressive lyrically, but Slug’s flow and delivery are still disappointingly boring. I fuck with this hook. The second verse was alright I guess. There were definitely some questionable lines tho… “I’m the shit, I get followed by a courtesy flush.” Hmm… I honestly really don’t know if I like this or not. I was enjoying it at first, but the struggle bars, weak flow, and boring delivery really hold this back for me. It’s okay I guess. 3/5

Track 17: Hell

This beat is really smooth. It’s dope af. Damn… Why the hell did they save the best beats for the bonus tracks? This is easily the best beat on the whole album so far. The first verse was dope. He’s reminiscing about his career. “Hell yeah I had a good time / But I ain’t tryna go no more.” Wow. I guess he’s probably thinking about retiring. This is depressing as fuck. The second verse was dope. I actually fuck with this track. It’s a flawed song—Slug’s flow is still underwhelming—but I enjoyed it. This is dope to me. 4/5

Track 18: I Don’t Need No Fancy Shit

This beat is dope. The hook is cool. It lasts a little too long for me, but it’s not that big of a deal. I just listened to the whole song, and I like it. There was only one verse in which Slug told a story about a bad cop. The song has a really simple structure, but I don’t mind. It’s much better than almost everything that actually made it onto the standard edition of the album. This is dope to me. 4/5

Track 19: Idiot

This beat is alright. The hook is okay. I wasn’t really feelin’ the first verse. It was decent, but it had a few too many questionable lines for me. “I was in the middle of a selfie / When you were trying to text me / Genius Interuptus.” I actually really liked the flow Slug was using when he started the second verse, but, again, there were just too many questionable lines for me. “My wife’s so fly all the suckers envy / She’s a beautiful soul to have and to hold / And wipe my butt when I get old.” The final verse was decent I guess. I’m not really feelin’ this one. The only thing that I really liked about it was the flow that Slug was using for the first few lines of the second verse. This song is just okay to me. 3/5

Track 20: Prelude To Hell

Oh shitfuck. This beat is dope af. This track is actually pretty relatable for me. Y’all might not know this, but I hate parties. That’s what Slug’s rapping about. Being at a shitty party. “Everybody in this bitch is over privileged.” This sounds like every party I’ve ever been invited to. This song is just one verse. It’s pretty short. I liked it tho. The instrumental outro was great. One thing that kinda took away from it was the fact that Slug could’ve just left instead of complaining about the party, but that’s really just a nitpick. This is dope af to me. 5/5

Final Thoughts:

Holy fuck that was disappointing. And boring. And depressing. Seriously, there are few things more depressing than seeing one of your favorite artists get old. Slug is still an above average writer in my opinion. There were more struggle bars on this album than I’m used to hearing from Slug, but he still isn’t a bad writer. This dude’s flow and delivery has gotten really fuckin’ weak tho. I don’t like Nate Collis or Erick Anderson. I want them to leave. That’s not gonna happen tho. I didn’t like the album. Pretty much everything about it was boring and underwhelming. I’m really hoping that Fishing Blues is better than this and The Family Sign. I think Nate Collis & Erick Anderson are still involved tho. I don’t know for sure. I’ve technically listened to every Atmosphere album that’s been released so far, but I won’t be writing my final thoughts on their discography until after I’ve heard Fishing Blues, so you’ll just have to wait for that. Anyway, this album is super underwhelming and disappointing. I don’t think it’s that bad, but I definitely wouldn’t call it good. I guess mediocre is the word I’d use. It’s easily my least favorite Atmosphere album. Hopefully that doesn’t change this Friday…

  1. I liked this joint, I prefer the maturity and melding of ideas and concepts. As a man you have to change and adapt to whatever life throws at you, if you don’t then you’re just stagnating and being complacent, thinking about “the good old days”. Such is the case with Slug, I think it’s better to experiment and delve into the bigger world that is out there it can create something truly great.

    That’s my opinion at least.
