EP Review | Lil Uzi Vert – Luv Is Rage 1.5

This EP was released on February 26th this year. I know what you’re thinking: “OG why the fuck are you reviewing this shit? You hate Lil Uzi Vert. We already know what you’re gonna say. Fucking hater. Smh.” INCORRECT. Some of you probably already know this, but there’s a particular song on here that I honestly think is really fuckin’ good. I’m hoping there’ll be even more good shit on here, but it’s only 4 tracks, so if not, I won’t have to suffer long. Anyway, it was released as a teaser for his upcoming project, Luv Is Rage 2. Since I despise most of his music, I’m not exactly sure why that project isn’t out yet. I’m pretty sure it’s been delayed a shit ton of times. I think it’s finished already, so I’m assuming it’s something to do with Atlantic Records. I don’t usually pay attention to the business side of things when I’m enjoying music, so I haven’t been keeping up with a lot of that shit. So yeah. Honestly… I still think I’m gonna hate this, but I’m sure it’ll be better than all the other shit I’ve heard from him up to this point.

Track 1: Boring Shit (Prod. Derelle Rideout)

Ok, here we go… Huh… Alright, this is already super different from anything I’ve ever heard from him. This beat incorporates what sounds like a Gospel sample. Holy fuck. Okay, when the percussion finally comes in this shit is awesome. This first verse is decent. I mean, it’s obviously not good lyrically, but his voice isn’t annoying the dogshit outta me like it usually does. I’m actually enjoying this. The hook is nothing special. It’s tolerable tho. Eh… This isn’t that good. Lol. It’s not really that bad. His melodic delivery is really re- Wah… What… What the fuck did this motherfucker just say? Hold up… Lemme run this shit back real quick. I know he did not just say what the fuck I think he said…

It seems like that I’m always on that thin line / Like 808s & Heartbreak, Kanye with a little hentai.

Oh… Oh my fucking God… Jesus fucking Christ… Okay, unless you follow me on Twitter you probably don’t know this, but I fucking despise weebs with every fiber of my being. Honestly, 75% of my hatred is a joke, but that hentai stuff is SUPER weird. Just in general, Japan is weird as fuck. I know this is fucked up to say, but when I think of Japan, one of the first things that comes to my mind is pedophilia. I just think the culture there usually has a really disturbing tendency to sexualize underage girls. I don’t know if this is true, but I heard that in Japan, people who illustrate manga are allowed to draw sexualized depictions of underage girls. Apparently this is so that pedophiles will spend time nutting to cartoon children instead of real ones. That’s so fucked up. It’s hopefully just a myth tho. I haven’t done any research on it. Even if you disregard the pedophilia aspect of it tho, just Japanese sexualization in general is weird as fuck. You know those vending machines that sell “used” panties? They’re fucking real. Granted, they’re not literally used—they’re only made to look that way—but still. It’s fucking creepy. What the fuck would you even by that shit for anyway? Not to mention the weird tentacle erotica phenomenon they have… I really shouldn’t have to explain why jerking off to animated women is weird as fuck tho. This is the main reason I judge weebs so much. Also, video games are fucking stupid. Lmao. I’m sorry. I actually used to play a lot of video games when I was younger, and I still do like once a year, but I really can’t stand video game culture. I don’t see the appeal in playing a game online and hearing a 12 year old kid call me homophobic and racist slurs. Not to mention the rampant misogyny and perpetuation of rape culture… ANYWAY, the reason I brought up my hatred for weebs in the first place was to explain why that line annoyed me so fucking much. I shouldn’t be surprised that Lil Uzi Vert is into hentai, but it’s still weird as fuck. In fact, hentai is honestly the main reason I had to cut one of my internet friends off. Some of you may know a Twitter shitposter named Panic Hippy who I used to be affiliated with. He tried to add me to a hentai group chat. That was the last straw for me. I blocked the fuck outta that weeb. Smh. Anyway, this song is bad. Lmao. I like the production, and this is far from Uzi’s worst work, but the repetitive melody during the verses gets annoying really quickly. I’m not feelin’ this. It’s wack.

Track 2: Luv Scars K.O. 1600 (Prod. DJ Plugg)

This beat is dope af. This hook is actually not too bad. It’s kinda catchy. The first verse was fine. I’m enjoying this track. It’s not good tho. Lmao. I like the song, but it’s wack. I mean, I personally think it’s entertaining, but I also feel like this is a bad song. I mean, the beat is great, and the melody of the hook is dope too. It’s way too repetitive tho, and the verses aren’t really good in any way. This is probably the best song I’ve ever reviewed from Lil Uzi Vert. It’s definitely the first song from him that I actually enjoyed on this website. This is kinda dope to me. I mean, it’s not that dope. I kinda like it tho.

Track 3: XO Tour Llif3 (Prod. TM88 & JW Lucas)

Alright here it is. This is the song that convinced me to give Lil Uzi Vert another chance. I love this song. I can confidently say this is Lil Uzi Vert’s best song, and I’ve only heard two other projects from him. First of all, TM88 & JW Lucas fucked this beat. The production is absolutely spectacular. The hook is unbelievably catchy too. I also love how dark the lyrics are for no apparent reason. I’m just talking about the hook right now tho. We’re gonna get to the verses… Anyway, the way he pronounces some of the words in the hook sounds strange to me—”awl mai frenz err ded”—but aside from that I love it.

I don’t really care if you cry / On the real, you shoulda never lied / Shoulda saw the way she looked me in my eyes / She said: “Baby, I am not afraid to die.”

I love the way those lines are delivered. The hook is great. Let’s get to the rest of this shit tho… Okay, the first verse is actually pretty good. Well, it’s good sonically. He unfortunately ditches the dark themes from the hook immediately.

Phantom that’s all red / Inside all white like somethin’ you ride a sled down / I just want that head.

I feel like I could freestyle these lyrics like 5 minutes after waking up. Nobody listens to Lil Uzi Vert for the content of his lyrics tho, so I’ll focus more on his delivery. He sounds great on the first verse in my opinion. His strange voice works perfectly with this beat when he’s singing in that lower register. However, for the second recital of the hook he sings in a louder, higher pitch, and it sounds far worse in my opinion. It’s not bad enough to ruin the song, but I definitely disagree with his decision to try to hit those higher notes. It didn’t really work very well. It’s tolerable tho. He thankfully goes back to the previous octave for the final recital of the hook. So yeah. It’s definitely not a perfect song, but it has a lot going for it. The melody and production are undeniable. There are some very slight undertones of depression and suicidality which I can appreciate, but if he stayed on topic more—I realize this is probably asking too much from Uzi, but still—this would probably be one of my favorite songs of the year. I think this song is dope af.

Track 4: YSL (Prod. DP Beats)

Hmm… This beat is kinda strange. I don’t know how I feel about it, but the percussion hasn’t come in yet. This long winded intro is annoying as hell. Ugh… This beat is alright I guess. Okay, this is fucking terrible. Lmao. This is the kinda shit I would expect from Uzi. This beat is a fucking mess. The hook is annoying as fuck. The verses obviously aren’t worth paying attention to. There’s really not a single facet of this song that I can tolerate honestly. This shit is wack af.

Final Thoughts:

This isn’t good. It’s not bad tho. It’s easily the best Lil Uzi Vert project I’ve ever reviewed, which isn’t saying much since it’s still a mediocre project that only has 4 tracks, but still. It’s enough to give me hope that maybe he’ll release more entertaining music in the future. I doubt I’ll ever really enjoy a full project from him, but I won’t be surprised if I hear more standout singles that are actually enjoyable for me in the future. He just needs to stop sloppily moaning over these unfocused beats, try to structure his verses more properly, actually focus on a particular theme for a song, and keep putting together aesthetically pleasing melodies. If he improves on all those aspects, I may end up enjoying more of his work in the future.

Favorite Song: XO Tour Llif3

Least Favorite Song: YSL

Verdict:

  1. Still trying to find what the appeal is with this dude. Aside from looking like he’d suck dick for a hit of crack, dude’s music is faux-Punk that pretends it isn’t Hip Hop, even though it is Hip Hop and pays no respect to those who came before him. The only thoughts I can actually give are, this dude should just go to work at Hot Topic or something. (Not a knock on HT, because they carry some decent Hip Hop/pro wrestling tees from time-to-time).

And lastly, Fuck this clown, I’m sorry you had to endure this trash.

Sidenotes: About Japan’s Hentai culture. Sometime after WWII the Japanese Government outlawed pornography (yes, porn was being made in the 1940’s, though it was more sensual than anything else) as they wanted to go into a more “Puritan” direction, so naturally what happens when you attempt to repress human sexuality…people find other outlets so instead of a man’s penis it became an extremely large squid tentacle(s) and it snowballed into some very nasty stuff…..It’s an odd and backwards country, Japan. Good pro wrestling though.

I love video games it’s a good stress reliever whether pummeling a muhfucka with their own spine in Mortal Kombat or reliving great Basketball rivalries in NBA 2K or just raging out in GTA it’s about having fun y’know.

Tell me if I'm trippin'
