Album Review | Quavo – QUAVO HUNCHO

This album was released on October 12th this year. I recently listened to Migos’ first album, Yung Rich Nation. It has some of the most generic Trap music I’ve ever heard. That was three years ago though. Culture is a much better album from the popular trio. I haven’t heard it’s long winded sequel, but I don’t think I really need to. I’ve heard a couple singles from it, and it sounds pretty bland. Quavo is easily my least favorite member of the group. He’s acquired the most mainstream success due to his melodic delivery. I just think he’s super average as a rapper. His flow is really basic, and I don’t really care for his style of singing with autotune. I honestly don’t think I’m gonna like this project. I heard a few of the singles, and it sounds like more generic Trap music that I’ve already heard 1000 times before. I heard pretty bad things about that joint album that he dropped with Travis Scott last year too. Hopefully there’ll be a handful of songs that I enjoy though. This thing is over an hour in length though, which really isn’t a good sign. Hopefully it’s not too much of a chore to get through.

1. BIGGEST ALLEY OOP produced by 30 Roc & CuBeatz

The beat on this song sucks to be honest. It sounds pretty discordant. I don’t know what instrument that is panned to the left, but it doesn’t fit with the rest of the beat. This just sounds like an average Migos song, without the two more interesting MCs in the group. Quavo’s got a boring flow on this track. There’s really not a single aspect of this song that I enjoyed. Nothing about it stands out in a positive way. This shit is mediocre to me.

2. PASS OUT featuring 21 Savage produced by Buddah Bless

This song has a pretty generic Trap beat. I’m not feelin’ the hook from Quavo. The first verse was boring as hell. He had nothing interesting to say. 21 Savage’s verse was a little better I guess. The final verse from Quavo did nothing for me. This is gonna be a difficult album to sit through. This song is boring as hell. Just like with the previous track, absolutely nothing about this song stands out in a positive way. It’s offensively generic. I’m not fuckin’ with it.

3. HUNCHO DREAMS produced by DigitalNas & Murda Beatz

This song starts with what sounds like an audio clip from a movie. I’m not sure what film it’s from. I don’t really watch movies. I saw Sorry to Bother You & Blackkklansman though. Those are two movies that I highly recommend. Anyway, the beat on this track is okay I guess. I’ve pretty much made up my mind about this song already. It’s just as boring as the first two tracks. This track is a little bit more interesting because he seems to be name dropping Nicki Minaj throughout the first verse. It sounds like he’s tryin’ to fuck. He even repeats “bounce that ass, Nicki” on the hook. Oh I get it. This song is called Huncho Dreams. It’s his response to Barbie Dreams. That’s cool I guess. I mean, the song’s not good at all, but it’s cool that he actually responded on the track. It doesn’t sound any different from everything else he’s ever released though. It’s a super boring, generic Trap song. I’m not fuckin’ with it.

4. FLIP THE SWITCH featuring Drake produced by CuBeatz & Wheezy

This song easily has the best beat on the whole album so far. It actually sounds kinda different. I’m really not feelin’ the hook from Quavo. The first verse from Drake was super underwhelming. Quavo comes in right behind him with a verse. It’s not very good, but it’s tolerable I guess. This is a pretty short song. There’s not much to discuss. I don’t think this is a good song. It’s a little better than the first three songs just because the production is actually different sounding, but it’s still a pretty boring track. I’m not fuckin’ with it.

5. GIVE IT TO ‘EM featuring Saweetie produced by Buddah Bless

This beat is nothing special. Quavo’s flow on this track is unbelievably boring. Saweetie just has four lines in the hook. She sounds pretty good. I just listened to the whole song. This might actually be the wackest song on the album so far. It’s so fucking boring. Absolutely nothing about this song stands out in a positive way. I’m offended by how underwhelming everything about this song is. Honestly, I need to stop going easy on mediocrity. This shit is wack to me.

6. SHINE produced by Tay Keith

This beat is a little better than that of the previous track. It’s still not that good to me though. I don’t care for the melodic hook. I’m insulted by how bad the first verse on this song is. His flow was mind numbingly dull. It’s a little better on the second verse, but not enough to make the song any more enjoyable. I’m not fuckin’ with this track. The production is average, and the verses were really bad. This shit is mediocre to me.

7. WORKIN’ ME produced by Murda Beatz

This is one of the three singles Quavo dropped from this album. I’ve already heard it before. It’s not good. It’s another super generic Trap song with no interesting qualities. The beat is nothing special, and the hook is boring as hell. The best thing about this song is its short length. His autotuned moaning in the background doesn’t sound good. His flow on the verses is super boring. This is a super mediocre track that I’ll never listen to again.

8. HOW ‘BOUT THAT? produced by Romano & OG Parker

I actually like the production on this track. It’s not amazing or anything, but it’s better than most of the other beats so far. The melodic hook didn’t really do anything for me, but it’s not particularly bad. The first verse was pretty goddamn boring. This is definitely the best song on the album so far, but that’s really not saying much. Both of the verses are really wack. The production is the only decent aspect of the song to be honest. This isn’t a good song, but it’s more tolerable than every other song so far. I’ll go easy on this track. It’s okay.

9. CHAMPAGNE ROSÉ featuring Madonna & Cardi B produced by Murda Beatz

I’m really not feelin’ the repetitive hook from Madonna on this track. That’s a super random feature. The first verse from Cardi B wasn’t very good. It was relatively decent though I guess. Jesus Christ this hook is so bad. The second verse from Quavo did absolutely nothing for me. It’s struggle bars. Was that verse from Madonna really necessary? Did she really have to do that to us? This is honestly the wackest song on the album so far. The feature from Madonna was annoying as hell. Cardi B is the best part of the song, and her part isn’t even good. This shit is wack to me.

10. KEEP THAT SHIT featuring Takeoff produced by Dun Deal

The beat on this song is pretty good compared to most of the other instrumentals on this album. The simplistic hook isn’t really good, but it gets the job done I guess. The first verse from Quavo is pretty boring. Takeoff’s verse was definitely the best aspect of this song. It’s not that good, but it’s a major step up from Quavo’s contributions to this song. It probably would’ve been better if his verse was a little longer. It’s fine though I guess. This is definitely one of the most tolerable songs on the album. I don’t think it’s good. I’m never gonna listen to it again. I hated it less than the other songs though. It’s okay.

11. FUCK 12 featuring Offset produced by EarlThePearll & CuBeatz

This track surprisingly opens up with an audio clip of a Malcolm X speech. This song easily has the best beat on the whole album so far. It’s dope. I’m not feelin’ Quavo’s corny flow on the first verse. The lyrics have absolutely nothing to do with the police. It sounds like every other verse Quavo’s ever performed. Offset’s verse was okay I guess. His flow was definitely better than that of Quavo. The hook is okay. I guess. I mean… I don’t know. I feel like it’s kind of a shitty song. I definitely enjoyed it more than a lot of the other songs though. The Malcolm X audio clips seem really out of place. This isn’t a good song. It’s mediocre to me.

12. LOSE IT featuring Lil Baby produced by Vance & JADED

This track has a super average Trap beat. I’m really not feelin’ this sung verse from Quavo at the beginning of the song. This is boring as fuck. Lil Baby is the best thing about this song. He had a much more energetic flow than Quavo. This is one of the most boring songs on the album honestly. The production is basic as hell, and Quavo’s verses sucked ass. Lil Baby’s verse was relatively decent, but it still wasn’t that impressive. This shit is wack to me.

13. RERUN featuring Travis Scott produced by Ikaz Boi & WondaGurl

The beat on this song is decent. I’m not really feelin’ the hook. The first verse in which they were trading bars did nothing for me. I’m not a fan of Travis Scott. I’m not entertained by hearing his autotuned singing. Quavo sounds like Travis Scott with a different voice on this track. They have the exact same style here. I’m not feelin’ this song at all. This is one of the wackest songs on the album in my opinion. This shit is bad.

14. GO ALL THE WAY produced by Pharrell Williams

The beat on this song is pretty dope. I don’t like the way Quavo’s singing all over this song with autotune. It’s a bit too poppy for me. It probably should’ve been a single for this album to be honest. It sounds pretty accessible. I feel like mainstream Rap fans would really fuck with this. I think it’s pretty terrible personally. I was surprised to see that the song is only about three minutes long. It feels a lot longer than that. I’m not feelin’ it. It’s wack to me.

15. LAMB TALK produced by Quavo & Buddah Bless

This was one of the three singles Quavo dropped from the album. It’s another super generic Trap song. The production is nothing special, and the hook is boring as hell. Quavo really just isn’t that good of a rapper, so the verses did absolutely nothing for me. His flow was a little more interesting on this song than it was on a lot of the previous tracks though. I’m never gonna listen to this song again. I think it’s slightly better than the previous handful of songs, but it’s still not good. It’s mediocre to me.

16. BIG BRO produced by Dun Deal

This song is slower paced than a lot of the other tracks on the album. I’m not feelin’ it. He’s singing with autotune, and it doesn’t sound very good. The repetitive hook sucks. I don’t like the way he’s moaning with autotune in the background. It sounds fucking bad, man. The production’s nothing special, and the verses on this song are boring as hell. This is another bad song. I’m really not feelin’ this shit. It’s wack to me.

17. SWING featuring Normani & Davido produced by Murda Beatz & G Koop

Oh nooo… I’m REALLY not feelin’ the poppy, dancehall-ish rhythm this beat has. This is pretty much a Pop song. I’m really not feelin’ it at all. I don’t like the sung first verse from Quavo, nor do I care for the hook. I wasn’t feelin’ Normani’s verse either. This really isn’t my kinda music. Davido’s verse sounded like it ended a bit too early. That’s fine by me though. I wasn’t enjoying it. I’m really not feelin’ this song. This shit is wack to me.

18. BUBBLE GUM produced by Buddah Bless

This was another one of the three singles he released before this album came out. It’s not good. I really have nothing to say about it honestly. It’s a super generic Pop Rap track that I’ll never listen to again. However, I do think it’s probably the best song out of the three singles he released. I can’t really say I enjoyed it personally, but I don’t think it’s complete trash. I see why he chose this as a single. It sounds like a really accessible, poppy, mainstream song. It’s just not for me personally. I think it’s mediocre.

19. LOST featuring Kid Cudi produced by Joseph DaVinci, Mike Almighty, Kid Cudi & Quavo

I just listened to this entire song. Kid Cudi’s verse was really the only enjoyable aspect of the track to me personally. I don’t really like the way Quavo’s singing sounded. The understated production didn’t really do anything for me. The weird talkbox vocals that come in during the outro sound bizarre. I don’t think this is a trash song. It’s definitely one of the more tolerable tracks on the album. I can’t really say I enjoyed it though. I don’t think it’s good, but it’s not that bad. It’s just mediocre to me.

This album fucking sucks to be honest. I don’t think there’s a single good song on this project. The best tracks are just tolerable. I think the singles are a pretty good indicator of what the rest of the album sounds like. It’s just super run of the mill Trap music with a few Pop songs sprinkled in. This is pure mainstream garbage. I don’t mean to sound like a hipster, but this is like listening to musical junk food. Quavo is the McDonald’s of Rap to me. It’s just typical mainstream production with super boring flows and repetitive hooks. I’m not feelin’ this album at all. Why the fuck was this shit so long? We really didn’t need this much music from Quavo. He could’ve cut this project in half and it still probably would’ve felt too long. This shit is wack to me.
