EP Review | Sadistik – L’appel Du Vide

This extended play was released on July 27th this year. Sadistik has been on a crazy run for the past couple of years. Last year he released two of my favorite extended plays of 2020, and I’m obsessed with his 2019 album, Haunted Gardens. I think Sadistik is one of the best writers in Hip Hop right now. His lyricism is really beautiful to me, so I think this is gonna be one of the best projects of 2021.


There aren’t any tracks that I don’t like on this project, so I’ll write about the whole EP in the proper order of the tracklist. It begins with Modern Times, which is produced by ORKA. I really love how melodic and pretty the beat here is. It’s also pretty dark though. I think it’s dope as hell. The first verse is beautifully written.

Pulling out my holy vows so in doubt sullen now
Skull without a spoken sound, sew my mouth so devout
Wolves howl at eroded house, blow it down, smoke an ounce
Buried clones in baritones, I know because I note it down
No one out only ghosts and owls in the this lonely town
I never understood what was left to meet the flood
They sell a hundred evils leave the dead to feed the young
Your hell is other people and that heaven reeks of blood

I think the weird, manipulated vocals that come in for the hook sound really cool. The second verse is even better than the first one in my opinion.

A fossilized abyss like the tarpits that I saw
I still smell the scents on the carpets that you walked
Sad aromas that followed me back to California
'Til your eyes look like the targets that I draw
I stand adorned with a crown of thorns lost my wings so I sprouted horns
We fall asleep to the sounds of war, I’m Salvador
Painting pain on flowers, why’s the rain taste so metallic?
These aphids in the attic made me change into a masterpiece

The song’s got a pretty straightforward structure, so the main selling point is really just the rapping. A more memorable hook probably could’ve pushed this song to the next level for me, but I think it’s dope as it is. The following track is called Gasoline, and I covered it earlier in the year in one of my Best Singles of the Week posts.

This is a collaboration that really caught me off guard. I don’t really know anything about Caskey other than the fact that he was signed to Young Money at some point. Or maybe it was Cash Money. I don’t know. It just seemed like YMCMB was signing anyone at one point. I remember that they signed Chanel West Coast, and at that point I completely stopped following them. I don’t know why I followed their work in the first place because I was never much of a fan. I actually think this track was my first time ever hearing Caskey rap though, and he did a good job. I liked that escape artist line he opened the verse up with.

Locked in a mental prison, lucky for me I’m an escape artist
What’s a bullet to a David Blaine? Man, you’re better off shooting at fake targets
I couldn’t cry, that’s a great harvest; cutting the head off a snake
I’m never counting on no one, just counting on all of the new dollar bills I can scrape

The opening verse from Sadistik is of course the main appeal of this song to me though. He fucking slaughtered that verse.

When I die Tutankhamun a cue to comment on comets
That come from my cuticles beautiful homage
Please don’t press me I’ll go nuclear
Sometimes I feel empty in my nucleus
I’m Mt. Vesuvius, these people petty for some new VS’s
Pressure pressing diamonds 'til they’re blinding in my bluebird chest
They running in circles to dumb down their virtues

I know mine, I’m the blood of the earth

This song is just another example of why Sadistik is one of my favorite writers in Hip Hop right now. The way he writes is just beautiful to me. The beat from Inteus is really nice too. This track sounds like something that could’ve been on Delirium, which was one of my favorite EPs of 2020. Overall, I think this is a really dope track, and I look forward to hearing even more from Sadistik this year. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Track 3 is called Mariana, and it features production from Illoquence & Rhythmatical.

I think the beat is pretty cool, but, once again, it’s really the actual rapping from Sadistik that sold me on this track. He slaughtered this shit.

Out here in the underground, hear when the thunder pounds
Fears in percussive sounds, tears coming from the clouds
Peers tend to dumb it down, I pierce with a hundred rounds
Unannounced come and get the spears that are coming out

All of the verses are fire, and the beat grows on me more and more every time I listen to it. This song also has one of the better hooks on the project in my opinion. I like how Sadistik kinda let the beat ride out for about 40 seconds at the end of the track too. It’s a really dope song overall. It’s followed by a highlight called Limerence, which is produced by Shrimpnose & Vague003. The song has a very straightforward structure, but it’s super well done. The whole track is just this beautiful verse about limerence—I didn’t even know what the fuck that was until I listened to this song; I had to google that shit. It’s a phenomenon I’ve struggled with at multiple points in my life, so this song really resonated with me.

I’d kiss your feet if it would make me feel less incomplete
I wanted what I didn’t need, too wanton with the little things
Bittersweet projector reel still haunted by the imagery
I just miss the feeling of you missing me
I can’t let you go I know I’m only special when the petals show
I’m talking with the spectres while you watch me for the spectacle
Exoskeleton skin, protects those gentle whims
Pretzel limbs when they echo all my existential dread

The way the beat kinda switches up for the outro is really goddamn nice. That kinda added another dimension to the track for me, so I’m glad he included it. I think the song is dope as hell. Track 5 is called BloodBorne, and it has some glorious production from Soudiere. It’s one of my favorite instrumentals on the project. I just think it’s really pretty. The hook on this track is pretty good, and the short verses are fantastic.

Victorious in my gory glory flow is glorious
Baccalaureate story of a Poet Laureate
Euphoria pouring out my pores until the worry sets
Morph aporias until the boring gets harmonious

I won’t be surprised if he ends up making a music video for this track because it sounds like a single. I think it’s really dope. The penultimate track is a single called Samsara, which has production from Foxwedding.

I think the beat here is pretty fucking awesome, and the rapping from Sadistik is as gorgeous as always. The first verse is really good, but the second verse is where he really snaps. His flow and rhyme patterns are crazy.

I cook up my defense like a Phalanx
A fence full of talons
Ask me anything I’ll deflect it with talent
Reflections infected with malice, amputate me
I’ll re-animate after they leave
Limbs hang by a limb I can’t mask the gangrene
When the path that I travel’s dilapidating
In daydreams that I have I decapitate kings

There’s really nothing about this song that I don’t like. I think it’s dope as hell. However, the following track is called The Moon Smiled Back at Me, and I think it’s even better. The production from HXRXKILLER & Mayten is absolutely gorgeous, and Sadistik’s rapping fits over it perfectly.

I’ve been inhaling the thinnest air
Fish scales on my skin and hair
Set sail but you didn’t care
Dancing like I’m Fred Astaire standing on a Finesterre
Ready for the rocks below, chest still full of rocket fuel
Flammable just another animal for fossil fuel
All my words are oxidized jar of flies are molecule

The song is split up into three different verses, and the beat switches up for the final one. I’d say the final verse is the climax of the whole project. He fucking killed this shit, and the second beat is amazing.

Introverted dizzy from the disconcerted tizzies
Mr. Perfect isn’t worth it, give me what I didn’t earn
Put it in an urn live and learn I could never tell the difference
When I’m miniature red alerts read aloud like ministers
It’s hard to breathe when you’re drowning in the goodbyes
But I’m still here now so tell me what that look like?
They use a sword to signify that you’re a good knight
Then use the same one to kill you and say goodnight

I love how the song ends too. This is easily the best track on the project to me to be honest. I think it’s dope af.


This EP is dope as hell. I think it’s one of the better projects to come out so far in 2021, so I’m pretty satisfied with it. Honestly, if you enjoyed either of Sadistik’s extended plays from 2020 then I don’t see why you wouldn’t like this one. It’s more of what Sadistik does best. His writing is as great as always, and his ear for beats is still top notch. This project just solidifies him as one of my favorite writers in Hip Hop right now. I think this shit is really great.
