This song was released on May 26th this year. Jéan P the MC is an artist I’ve covered before in 2020 back when I was doing those Best Singles of the Week articles. I’ve listened to a couple albums from him, and there are usually a handful of songs that I like, but I haven’t enjoyed a full project overall yet. I think he’s a talented lyricist though. He’s definitely a good rapper. The main reason I haven’t liked an album yet is because I’m just not crazy about most of his production choices and features. This latest song is a step in the right direction though.
The production from Trade Voorhees isn’t amazing or anything, but I definitely like it to some extent. I think it’s pretty good. The main appeal of this song is just the actual rapping from Jéan P though.
Lately I been takin' deep breaths instead of havin' fits
Appreciating gratitude from days of never havin' shit
I bet these haters shocked to see how far with rap I get
Drivin' by yellin' my songs like, "P, that's my shit"
Mind slayer, rhyme sayer, man of many things
Livin' the life of a real one that a kid could dream
The hook is cool, but it’s really the actual verses that make this song worth returning to for me. Jéan P’s flow isn’t too flashy or anything. The selling point is just the actual rhymes and lyrical content.
The MC move a strategy like Sun Tzu
The world is lookin' like a maze, so who you gon' run to?
I'm real about this culture, but yes, I'm havin' fun too
So when you see me in the streets say "peace, peace" and "one, two"
I really like how he rhymed every form of the word “to” with each other. That was really cool. I kinda wish the production switched up at some point because it gets a little repetitive by the time the song is over. However, as a whole, I definitely enjoyed this song.
