This single was released on May 23rd this year. Maze Overlay is an artist who I discovered through his feature on Sleep Sinatra’s DIVINENATION album. He released an album with Sadhugold earlier this year called Afghani Gold, which I haven’t listened to yet, but am looking forward to checking out. I’ve only heard like one or two verses from him, but, based on what little I’ve heard, I’m sold. I think he’s a really talented lyricist, so that’s why I decided to give this track a listen. It’s the first single from an upcoming project entitled Nouveau Antiqua. Thankfully, it did not disappoint.
The song is produced by an artist with whom I was previously unfamiliar named Wax Pack. I think the instrumental is pretty great. I really love the dusty percussion. Maze killed the first verse too. His flow is smooth as hell. He also has a pretty unique voice. I’m not good at explaining what people’s voices sound like, but I wanna use the word “velvety” to describe it. I don’t know if that makes sense. It may or may not mean something to you. I like his voice though. It sounds good.
Villain still in the field like a running back
Walter Payton with these statements fillin' duffle bags
I seen ghosts turn a couple hundred into twenty racks
Leave it to the dealer to wash the money like bubble baths
There’s not really a hook on this track. The two verses are just divided by what I believe is an audio clip from Ocean’s 11. I’ve never seen that movie before, so I had no idea who Danny Ocean was before checking this song out. The second verse is just as great, if not better than the first one in my opinion.
Bugatti dollars like dough, it help me ride slow
I was Danny Ocean pullin' jobs with my eyes closed
Like walkin' a tightrope with a blindfold
Daylight savings how I'm fuckin' up these timezones
I really don’t have any nitpicks with this song. It didn’t totally blow me away, but I definitely enjoyed it quite a bit. It’s possible that I would’ve enjoyed the song even more if I was a big fan of Ocean’s 11, but I’m not sure. I don’t know exactly how much of this song is based on that movie since I’ve never seen it. I’m not really a movie guy. I hadn’t even seen Pulp Fiction until late last year. Anyway, this song is really dope to me, and it has me looking forward to the upcoming album, which is entirely produced by Wax Pack. Check this shit out and let me know what you think in the comments below.
