Album Review | Vic Spencer – If George Bush Was Cool

This album was released on April 7th this year. This is the second project Vic Spencer has released this year if I’m not mistaken. The first one was a collaboration with 38 Spesh, which I enjoyed despite its brevity. With that said, I was hoping that this latest project here would be a bit more ambitious and fleshed out. I was not disappointed. In fact, this project actually ended up being even better than I was expecting. I guess I should’ve known I would enjoy it though because it has contributions from a lot of artists that I fuck with. As soon as I heard the first track I had a feeling that I would need to write a review, and I ended up being correct because the whole project goes hard.

The album begins with WMIZ World Premiere, which is produced by Jlvsn. The beat is fire. I don’t really know how to describe why I like it so much. It’s fire though. Same goes for the verse from Vic. He killed this shit. In fact, I feel like his flow has only gotten better lately. He sounds great here.

Imagine if George Bush was cool
Imagine if no mechanics never picked up a tool
I’m sick of your rules, I’m fresh as hell sittin’ in school
I’m the big dog that love shittin’ on fools

This song is kinda short, but the length works since this is just the intro. The song doesn’t feel incomplete or anything. I think it’s really dope. It’s followed by a highlight called The New Nobody. This one’s got one of my favorite beats on the album from someone named CJ. It kinda reminds me of the beat to Cambatta’s Grand Number TheoRam. It’s pretty amazing honestly. I love how heavy the bass is. Vic killed it too.

The mic burnin’ from the syphilis bars
Disrupt countries, nigga, I live with the sarge
Put the mask on and sit in my car
Smack you one time, you’ll have ridiculous scars
Bitch, I’m a star, and nah, not the ones on the radio
Not the sky either, I’m the guy that provide ether
Smokin’ on a strain at that
Make sure all my posts move counterattacks
No longer live the king, Vic Spencer don’t want the crown
It’s about nine people stoppin’ me in traffic downtown
I wonder what’s happenin’ now
I ain’t Illuminati, I ain’t summa cum laude
I’m the new nobody

I really loved that line about your head exploding in the sky and your eyes falling in someone’s commode. That was fire. I mean, it’s a weird ass bar. It’s creative though. I like it. This whole song is just one long verse, and usually when I listen to songs that have such straightforward structures they feel a bit undercooked, but that’s not the case here at all. In fact, almost every song is structured this way on the album, but at no point do any of the songs feel incomplete. I think it’s just because the verses are usually pretty long. He’s not just spitting a 16 and then dipping. The songs are a decent length, ya know? Anyway, I really fuck with this track. I think it’s dope as hell. The following track is even better to me. It’s called Cottage Grove Seminars, and it’s got a phenomenal instrumental from GRAYMATTER of Mutant Academy. I love how dark, yet cinematic this beat sounds. Vic killed the first verse too.

If I ain’t touchin’ the mic, then I’m somewhere smokin’
Or I’m doin’ both, even the microphone started chokin’
I got a target, but it’s out in the open
This shit is over with, load the clips
I’m where the ocean is, this is a motion pic

There’s also a pretty awesome verse from Grafh. I loved that line where he said he was more like Biggie Smalls than Big Sean. That was tight.

Tell Virgil, “write ‘brick’ on my brick”
Extendo lookin’ like I screwed a nightstick on my grip
A thousand grams of fried fish on my grits, I eat hearty
You in the streets hardly
Get your favorite rapper beat and robbed at his release party
I spark ‘til the steam foggy
Leapfrog, he retarded, at least partly

Honestly, I think this is one of the best features I’ve heard so far this year. This track is definitely going in my “Best Features of 2023” playlist. They both killed this shit. I love it. The beat does get slightly repetitive after a while, but that’s just a nitpick. I think the song’s dope as hell. The next track is yet another highlight entitled Basement Flu.

I really love the production from Don Carrera on this song. I’m becoming a big fan of him. I loved his work on that X-Calibur EP from Sleep Sinatra, so I was looking forward to this track a lot, and it didn’t disappoint. I love how dusty the drums sound. The first half of the song is really nice, but the second half is even better. The beat switch is really nice. Vic sounds great over it too. The hook is really simplistic, but it works well. The rhyme is tight. I fuck with it. The main reason I love this song so much is just that I think the production is really good, and Vic’s rapping over it is great. The song’s dope as hell. Track 5 is yet another highlight entitled Excellent Operations.

I love Bloodblixing’s production on this track. That horn loop is fire. The rapping from Vic is great too. I loved that closing line about testing the mic because he spits HIV.

Niggas gotta learn to operate, stop the hate
Before the chopper spray I get locked away
Do dumb shit, get done quick
Handicapped rappers swear to god that they run shit

There are just two verses on this track with a short break in between. Once again, the reason I love it so much is just that the production is phenomenal, and Vic rapped really well over it. This track is dope as hell. It’s followed by Bonnet Doo Rags, which features Estee Nack & Koncept Jackson. I think the boom bap production from Dibia$e is pretty awesome. The opening verse from Vic is really dope too.

Noname & Jean Deaux, ain’t that the same thing?
Chicago full of facades, so I hate to claim king
Niggas put out songs and they vocals too low
Your engineer don’t care about you, he just puffin’ your dro
Niggas out here soundin’ like me, that’s cool
Just give me my props when I dunk on the opps
I don’t do ring around the rosie raps, what you see is what you get
They still gotta depict words ‘cause they stupid as shit

The way the beat switches up as soon as Estee Nack comes in is really cool. He sounds great here. I love how he started the verse. He sounds awesome here. I’m sadly not as crazy about the closing verse from Koncept Jackson, but it’s not bad at all. I just don’t think he enunciates his bars that well. It’s kinda hard to decipher what he’s saying. The verse is fine though. I think Vic had the best performance on this song, but the features aren’t bad at all. The song’s dope. The next track is a highlight called Permjuice. The production from Earl Saga is actually really awesome. It’s the kinda beat that I’d only wanna hear a really dope lyricist over. I think it’s amazing, and Vic sounds fantastic over it.

Back up the car to my brother’s house
Other routes to my enemies house was found
Put the mask on, get my dash on to my spouse blouse
And step back out to the streets to solve the beef
Niggas out here scared of me
You’ll play this one time, motherfucker, it’ll stay on repeat
But back to the streets, niggas with heat lookin’ for me
But I ain’t hard to find, I wash clothes by the moss over East

Strictly in terms of flow, I think this is one of Vic’s best performances on the album. He killed this shit. The song’s pretty brief, but it doesn’t feel too short. I think it’s dope as hell. The following track is called Freelance Shooter, and it’s got a really nice, jazzy instrumental from Sovren. As always, Vic sounds fantastic over it.

I’m amongst the population of motherfuckers that’s gettin’ it
Amongst those that chose they souls to be infinite

The beat switches up after about one minute and gets a bit more energetic. It’s still really jazzy though. Once again, this song is kinda short, but there’s enough going on here to keep things interesting. The beat switch helps a lot. The outro is cool too. I fuck with this song. I think it’s dope. The following track is called Brilliant Desires, and it’s produced by someone with whom I was previously unfamiliar named Dot Org. This is one of the weaker beats on the album to me, but that’s not saying much. It’s still a very good instrumental. It’s just really lavish-sounding, and I generally am not super into that style of production. It sounds like a bubble bath in the form of music. It’s cool though. I still fuck with it. The verse from Vic is great.

Flippin’ the bird at the birds that rap like chirps
I was last place, but now I’m first
Whoever is second better have a weapon
Never look to the devil for all my blessings
All the cribs I paid rent for was built off edges
I survived and then showed off my leverage
After I made the cost of victory I needed a beverage
Sat my black ass down, enjoyed life for a second
This shit is not promised no more, they robbin’ the stores
Niggas out here mobbin’ for war
Gotta be ready, grab the Glock and the machete
Rambo shit, artillery heavy

He killed this track. I really fuck with this one. I think the song’s dope. Track 10 is called Chronic Medley, and it’s produced by The Standouts. The beat here is really awesome. It’s definitely one of my favorite instrumentals on the album. I love how it switches up about halfway through the track. The second part of the beat is even better than the first in my opinion. Vic’s rapping here is great as always.

I'm sick of the same shit, different toilet type of days
High as hell on the low end, boilin' up the haze
Destroyin' the old phase, it's amazing, accomplished, astonishing
Victor is the shit when he vomiting

I really love the part towards the end where he starts rapping about that trend of Hip Hop legends scamming up & coming rappers on IG.

Mixtape placements not doin' shit regardless
It's legends asking the internet to tag the hardest artist
Then they jump into the aspiring artist's email askin' if they hungry
Then turn to vultures and ask them for some money
But the thing is it's not even the legends that's doin' it
It's a big ass company that slid in to ruin shit
Pay the legends so they hand out they handle
Then they suck money from rappers, man, this shit is a scandal

I don’t know if y’all are familiar with what he’s talking about, but it’s a real thing that’s been happening for the past few years. I wanna say it started during the pandemic, but I could be wrong. It’s possible that it’s been going on longer than that. It’s cool to hear Vic rap about it. Anyway, the song is dope as hell overall. It grew on me after repeat listens. I like it even more now than I initially did when I first heard it. It’s followed by Rearranged King, which has production from someone named Jevon Suggs. The first part of the beat is just a really simplistic loop, and I was afraid that it wouldn’t switch up at any point, but it thankfully does after about one minute. Vic’s rapping is the best part of this song in my opinion.

Real enjoyment, mayne
Single ladies think a nail appointment is more important than an oil change
I know you see that damn light while you drive to the nail shop
Rappers that has never been before told me hell's hot
They never been to jail, but tryna tell me 'bout cell blocks
Chicks get plastic surgery, they really need kale shots

I loved the line about eating a sandwich while having sex. That was hilarious. I think the production on this track is solid, although it’s definitely one of the less enjoyable beats on the album to me. It’s still good though—particularly the second half. Overall, the song is really dope to me. Track 12 is called Tripping Blvd, and it’s produced by Shadowed Sounds. It also features an artist named Kandice Nichol. I love how dark & menacing the beat here is. It kinda sounds like something Stu Bangas would make. The beat switches up about halfway through the song and gets a bit more lofi & electronic sounding. I really fuck with the instrumental on this track. Vic rapped really well over it too. Unfortunately I’m not crazy about the featured artist here. I don’t think her rapping is bad, but I’m not really into her singing on the hook. I will say that I don’t dislike it now as much as I did when I first heard it. Her actual verse is pretty fuckin’ dope too. Overall, I think this is a good song. It’s not really a highlight for me on the album, but I definitely fuck with it to some extent. The penultimate track is entitled Phlegmulus Package, and it’s produced by KNGKVMI. This is another highlight on the album for me. The production is really fantastic. I could definitely hear MF DOOM over this beat. That would be fire. I love how aggressive Vic’s vocal delivery is on this track. His flow is really nice too. This is definitely one of my favorite tracks on the album. The production is fire, and Vic sounds awesome over it. I love how he rhymed “apricots” with “aftershocks.” That was fire. When it comes down to it, I really just love this song because the production is stellar, and Vic killed it. The song’s dope as hell. The closing track is called Minor Sacrifices, and it’s produced by an artist named Virtuosoclean. I really love this beat. I don’t know why, but for whatever reason I feel like Nas would sound amazing over it. He never really rapped over a beat like this before. There’s very minimal percussion. The loop is really jazzy and chill. I love it. Vic’s rapping over it is pretty nice too.

Laid in the shade with my bae eatin' some plain Lays
Long as I'm livin' I make sure that I'm paid
Risk it all for minor sacrifices
I still love it, so I had to like it
Some of you people got the saddest vices
Went outside with the pricy Nikes
Resale price, try to get that sliced
Yeah right, nigga, I got left sittin' sideways
I lived to see another day, called it "my day"

I really love that closing line. The song’s really dope, and I think it’s a great way to close the album.

This album is pretty great. There’s not a single track here that I don’t like. I think the reason I enjoyed this project so much is simply that the production choices are really great for the most part, and Vic is in peak condition over all of these beats. Pretty much every single track had at least one or two lines that really stood out. I feel like Vic is just getting better from a technical perspective. His flow felt more intricate than usual here. None of the features are bad. Same goes for the beats. Everyone involved in this project came through. This is one of my favorite Vic Spencer projects now. I’m used to hearing him work with one producer at a time for each project, so it was kinda cool to get a good variety of artists involved in this one. I had a lot of fun listening to this album. If you’re a fan of Vic Spencer, I’d say this is a must listen album of his. You may or may not like it as much as me, but I’m sure there’ll be at least a handful of songs that you really fuck with. This shit is really dope. Check it out, and let me know what you think in the comments below.
