Song Review | Napoleon da Legend & J-Scienide – Luxurious Apartheid

This song was released on June 9th this year. I think I was first exposed to Napoleon da Legend when he went on Shade 45 for a Friday Fire Cypher about 6 years ago. Then I heard him on K-Beta’s magnum opus, Bad Rap. However, I didn’t really start listening to his music until last year. On the other hand, I first discovered J-Scienide when he was featured on Sleep Sinatra’s In God’s Image album. I went on to enjoy his Periodic Tables of Excellence album from last year. When I first got the Bandcamp email about this latest song, I didn’t really take a good look at the credits, so I assumed it was just a solo track from J-Scienide. It’s the first single from a collaborative album by him and Napoleon da Legend though. J-Scienide handled the production, and Napoleon is rapping. I didn’t even really know that J-Scienide was a producer, so I wasn’t sure how I would feel about the instrumental here, but it thankfully ended up meeting my standards.

My favorite aspect of the instrumental is definitely the drums, which sound really goddamn dirty. I love how murky and dusty they are. I also love the vocal sample that comes in after about 26 seconds. Napoleon fuckin’ killed this shit too. His flow and rhymes just get more and more intricate as the song progresses.

Remain nameless, charisma contagious
Before you even mention my name, you get shot before the syllable changes
Interchangeable, jettin' through many chambers, I'm in range too
Now claimin' stake on a piece of land I was chained to
Transactional relations, international formations
Low aptitude for patience, cops on avenues is racist
Throw it back at you verbatim, seen clergymen lie
Zero encouragement, want us to put in work 'til we die
Undiplomatic conversations, feet flyin' up to faces
Prophecies of pointed pride, I'm just a live confirmation
A general, stay bein' hungry even though the plate is plentiful
While they talk, my impact on the game remains immeasurable

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a verse from him that didn’t impress me, so I wasn’t surprised by how well he rapped here. I can always count on him to murder a verse, so it’s really up to the producer to make an interesting canvas for him, and thankfully J-Scienide came through with a really nice instrumental. The cuts from DJ Jon Doe are just the icing on the cake. Shoutout to Damu the Fudgemunk for mixing and mastering this track too. Anyway, give this track a listen and let me know what you think in the comments below. I think it’s really dope.
