This single was released on June 8th this year. Black Thought is one of my favorite MCs of all time, and he currently has my album of the year alongside El Michels Affair, so I was pretty psyched when I saw him announce this track on Instagram. Apparently him and Black Rob used to talk about doing a whole album together. I don’t think they recorded the full thing, but we at least got this track, so that’s pretty cool. I really don’t have any experience with Black Rob’s music. The only time I’ve ever heard him rap was when he was featured on Diamond D‘s first Diam Piece album. I really enjoyed his performance there, so I think I’ll dig what he did on this latest track. It’s produced by Nashiem Myrick, 6 July, and D-Dot.
I’m really not crazy about the instrumental on this song. The weird piano loop just sounds kind of shitty to me honestly. The first verse from Black Rob is pretty good though. I like how he managed to carry the same rhyme scheme throughout the entire performance. That was cool. This is gonna sound super nitpicky, but just hear me out; I don’t like the way he keeps emphasizing the word “up” at the end of each bar. He should’ve stressed the preceding word instead because that’s where the unique rhyme actually was. As it is, it makes it sound like he’s rhyming the word “up” with itself over and over again. Anyway, the hook on this track isn’t really anything special, but Black Thought fucking killed the second verse on this track. His flow and vocal delivery are super aggressive. I love it.
My ill hunger is Killmonger, the king is dead
I come to whoever claim king, and bring his head
My K swingin', I got it made, no Special Ed
Rappers hung over the edge, you be the next one
It ain't no savin' you, bitch slap the best one
One complaint I do have about the Black Thought verse is that it sounds kinda shittily recorded. I’m not sure if it just wasn’t mixed and mastered properly or what, but it sounds pretty rough to me. I can kinda get past that though. It’s not nearly bad enough to completely ruin the song. Anyway, I think this track is okay overall. My biggest issue is the weak production. The rapping is very good though. I’m sure this will be a pleasurable listen for fans of Black Rob. It doesn’t sound like something that was disrespectfully cobbled together by vultures after his death. I’m glad this song happened. It’s not something I’m gonna be listening to again in the future, but it’s still exciting. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments below. You might enjoy it more than I did.
