This extended play was released on March 3rd this year. Sleep Sinatra is one of my favorite rappers right now, so I listen to everything he puts out. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a project from him that I don’t like. In fact, now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever even heard a single song from him that I don’t fuck with. He’s thankfully a really prolific artist too; he actually has a brand new album called Incorruptible Saints produced by Televangel dropping tomorrow, which I’m really looking forward to. He also dropped a mixtape at the end of May that I’m gonna be checking out. On the other hand, we have The Architect, who fully produced this project. I’ve enjoyed their work with Planet Asia in the past. They’ve also done work with some Hieroglyphics members, such as A-Plus & Tajai. Even though I know I’ve heard production from The Architect in the past, I’m not familiar enough with them to really have any expectations for this project sonically. I know I’m gonna fuck with the rapping though, so I’m really looking forward to this.
The project begins with Infinite Ammo, which has a very lighthearted, yet hard-hitting beat. I love how dusty the drums sound. The hook on this track is nice, and the verses are of course very good.
The final warnings, I shine absorbing darkness The balance make me whole hearted Could throw a dart blindfolded and still hit my target Kick it like a pistol sparkin' from official marksmen Life made me hard, I'm walkin', future uncharted Carvin' my name in stone here even when departed You hear the beat, biters compete and couldn't reach a carcass Flyin' harder, Sagittarian archer, my aim the farthest Rock with Architect the Archangel, trumpets when the heavens' callin'
I think I misquoted those lines, but I’m pretty sure I got them mostly right. I swear I could listen to Sleep Sinatra rap forever. He never has any generic, filler lines. I’m always genuinely interested in what he has to say, which is why he’s one of my favorites. His flow is excellent too. This shit is really dope. The following track is called Zeruel, and it’s got a really weird beat. I’m honestly not sure how I feel about it. The melody is just really goddamn repetitive. This is easily my least favorite beat on the project. The drums sound good though, and Sleep killed it.
Been on my self validation, all the clout we get boof
Vibes like the play shiftin', know your house could get moved
Spirit of panthers prowlin', pouncin' on the pig's crew
Still ACAB, gotta chant it like aid that to my roots
Raise the stakes to new heights, collapsin' the proof
This is thought in action that actually moves
Brain carry the world's weight, and got capacity too
Shake a situation and drop you like gravity, dude
Get manically bruised, pad equal to padded walls in a room
Absorb what I been through and dissolve it in loops
Again, I think I definitely misquoted some of those lines—particularly the fourth one. Anyway, the rapping is thankfully good enough to keep this song entertaining despite the fact that I don’t really care for the production. I think it’s a pretty good song overall. Same goes for the following track, Hadron Collider Clap. The beat on this track is definitely better than that of the preceding track. It’s still pretty repetitive though. The first verse is really nice, but the second verse is where Sleep really killed it in my opinion.
I been busy perfectin' my signs, so when it's tested
It's high grade, aligned with my ways and inner essence
Pen a message, but it's strike time, so here's to rememberin'
I see a silver skyline when I be steppin'
The hook on this song is nice too. If the production was less repetitive I’d definitely like this song more, but I still enjoy it as it is. I think it’s pretty good. It’s followed by a highlight called Eruption. I think this song has some of the best rapping on the whole project.
They say I'm a functionin' alcoholic, I tell 'em I like the bars a lot
Punch you in the parking lot for acting like you harder, stop
This is not one of them gimmicks that you call for props
This is real livin', I'm givin' 'em what they ought to cop
Extended clip roll you out and transform you like an autobot
Problems stop, bet you ain't think it could get harder, rock
That part was popped like a recoil when calling shots
I seen hell and the Devil told me his call was blocked
I actually really like the beat on this song too. This might be my favorite beat on the EP. Even the hook stood out a lot on this song. I really like the Will Smith line. I love how he’s become the poster boy for slapping the shit outta niggas. That’s hilarious. The second verse on this song is fire. He really killed that shit. I love how there are actually three verses on this song too. You can actually tell that he put a lot of effort into this track. Again, it’s one of my favorites on the project. I think it’s dope as hell. The closing track is called Affirmations for the Rapture, and it’s got another one of the best beats on the project. It’s a lot more laid back and jazzy than most of the preceding material. I think it sounds really good. I absolutely love the drums on this one. Sleep rhymed his ass off on the first verse.
Conjuring soul over the drum break
Speaking gold, feel this controlled on deeper substrates
Too much hate'll have your heart in a hushed state
Rollin' up this duct tape, this dumb strength
Things that we overcome show us how to shrug fate
Shook off the challenge, found balance with enough takes
Tuck papes, tryna make change in the floodgates
These niggas lack the awareness to try to touch pain
The second verse is even better. His flow is relentless. I love it. The melodic hook is pretty great too. That’s probably my favorite hook on the project. Overall, I have no complaints. I think this song is dope as hell.
This project is great. I think the production from the Architect is kind of a mixed bag. The beats range from mediocre to pretty damn great. What keeps things interesting is Sleep Sinatra himself. He sounds as hungry as ever here. Every verse here is really good. His flow and rhymes are on point, and I even like the hooks on this thing. There’s not a single track on this EP that I don’t like. I can understand why some people might not like certain tracks because not all of the beats are great, but I really enjoyed this thing. This release left me wanting more, which I think is a sign of success for an EP. Thankfully, as I mentioned earlier in the preamble to this review, Sleep is remaining very prolific, so I have more shit to check out. This one is dope though. I really enjoyed this. Give it a listen and let me know what you think in the comments below.
