This song was released alongside a music video directed by Cole Bennett on June 23rd this year. This is apparently the first single from a “Lyrical Lemonade” album. I think it’s really interesting that they’re putting out an album. There are a lot of cool things they can do with it. A visual album directed by Cole Bennett would be really cool. Anyway, I’m not really sure how I’m gonna feel about this song, but the names attached have me really curious about it. I haven’t heard a beat from Dr. Dre in what feels like forever. I guess the last thing he put out was that collection of singles for Grand Theft Auto a couple years ago. That was okay I guess. Anyway, now that I’m talking about him, I guess now would be a good time to let y’all know that my Dr. Dre marathon is incredibly outdated, and I don’t love Compton nearly as much as I initially did. I mean, I haven’t listened to it in forever, so I don’t even know how I would feel about it today. I definitely think I would still like it, but I don’t know that it would be my favorite Dr. Dre album anymore. I don’t really listen to any of Dr. Dre’s music that much anymore though. There’s only so many times you can listen to the same three albums before getting bored, ya know? Anyway, I wasn’t a fan of Juice WRLD at all when he was alive, mostly because of the song Lucid Dreams. That song was and still is terrible to me. However, I’ve enjoyed several features that I’ve heard from him since then, and I don’t think all of his music is as bad as that song. Juice WRLD has definitely grown on me over the years. However, my opinion of Cordae has sadly gone in the opposite direction. I enjoyed his debut album, but the one he released last year was the epitome of midpack. Everything he’s done since that first album has just felt really watered down and stale. I’m hoping his performance on this song will make me a believer again, but I’m not gonna get my hopes up too high.
Well, this song was not what I was expecting at all. It’s basically a glorified remix of Eminem‘s Role Model. There isn’t a new beat from Dr. Dre & Mel-Man on this song at all. I have to say, I’m pretty damn disappointed. This isn’t bad at all, but it’s just really not what I wanted. The rapping is pretty good, but I’m never gonna listen to this again. There’s no setting in which I would rather listen to this than the original version of Role Model. This is just a really odd choice for a lead single to an album. I’m at a point in my life where I don’t really care to hear artists rap over other people’s beats, which is funny because I used to really like when they did that. I just would much rather hear a more original song these days. Honestly, if I had heard this song before writing the preamble to this write-up, I wouldn’t even be reviewing it. This felt like a waste of time. Maybe I’m being too harsh though. I think that if this song came out when it was first recorded it would’ve hit harder. However, the circumstances are too different these days. My expectations are way different. The fact that the music video got over a million views in under a day led me to believe that this song would be more special than it is. I did enjoy the rapping to some extent. I don’t think the lyrics themselves are that good in terms of content, but the rhymes and flows sound pretty good. That’s pretty much all I have to say about the song though. The beat is of course fire. However, as I said before, there’s no reason for me to listen to this song when Role Model still exists. This was a disappointment. You might enjoy it more than I did though, so give it a listen and let me know what you think in the comments below.
