Album Review | Bloodblixing – SODOM & GOMORRAH GANGSTA EDITION

This album was released on July 7th this year. Bloodblixing already put out one of the better albums of the year alongside Iceberg Theory with SUNDAE FUNNYZ GANGSTA EDITION, so I was pretty excited when I found out about this latest one. Blix himself described this album as having “Avant-garde Bloodblixing beats,” so that should be interesting. There are also a lot of very enticing features all over this project, so this is gonna be an exciting listening experience. I’m not necessarily expecting to love this as much as SUNDAE FUNNYZ, but I will frankly be shocked if I don’t enjoy it to some extent.

The album begins with ALBERT HAYNESWORTH, which features Iceberg Theory & 2 Dolla Will. I think the melodic production is pretty awesome, and the opening verse from Iceberg Theory is excellent. The closing verse from 2 Dolla Will is really great too.

Your mom's a naughty little whore, this the calm before the storm
See 2 Dolla season approach, Butte tweakers so greasy their sweat turns green in the snow

The one aspect of the song that I’m not crazy about is the verse from Blix himself. I mean, the verse isn’t actually bad at all. My issue with it is just that the mixing is noticeably 10x worse on his vocals than it is on either of the featured artists’ vocals. The verse isn’t super amazing or anything, but I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if it was mixed better. Thankfully not all of Bloodblixing’s verses are mixed this poorly on this album. I knew the mixing would be rough, and it’s part of Blix’s style at this point. I can definitely tolerate it when it comes to the instrumentals, but when the vocals sound like they were recorded with a portobello mushroom it’s kind of hard to appreciate the lyrics. Anyway, overall I really enjoyed this track. I think I would’ve enjoyed it even more if it was just Iceberg Theory & 2 Dolla Will, but Bloodblixing’s poorly mixed verse doesn’t completely ruin the song. It’s a dope track. The following track is called FADEAWAY, and it’s performed by Obijuan. I think the dark instrumental here is absolutely stellar. I especially love the light, dusty drums that come in after the first 24 seconds. The verse from Obijuan is pretty solid. I don’t love his flow or his monotone vocal delivery, but his lyrics are tight. The instrumental is the best aspect of this song to me. I still really enjoyed this track overall though. I think it’s dope. Track 3 is called JOSEPH STALIN STYLIN’ ON ‘EM, and it’s performed by Unruly, who really impressed me here. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy his performance here as much as I did because his recent album with klwn cat didn’t leave much of an impression on me. The rapping here is really great though.

Seven days old when God created the dirt
We all congregate in the ground 'cause our father's fate was deserved
Shawty rock and shake to the sound of my heart decayin' through words

The beat here is really cool too. The weird horn loop makes me think of Hades’ Underworld from Kingdom Hearts II. I don’t know what I like more about this song between the production and rapping. This is another really great track. It’s followed by ASESINATO EN BLANCO, which features Milc, and is my favorite song on the album. The beat here is fucking insane. This is the weirdest beat I’ve heard all year. It’s incredible though. I love the weird drum pattern, and the different sounds that fade together just sound so crazy. Just listen to the background noise that fades in after the first 36 seconds. It’s crazy. Crazy! Milc fucking killed his verse on this track too. I’ve stated in the past that his style isn’t really my cup of tea, but I think this is the best verse I’ve ever heard from him. He murdered this shit.

It's embarrassing, they Google Imaging two-doors
I don't know what's worse, your 16s or your mood boards
How 'bout if you not 16 don't make a mood board
Go get a full time job, dog, you're too bored

I don’t think Bloodblixing’s verse is nearly as good, but it’s still pretty solid. The beat is just too weird for me to not love it. It made me think of Fantastic Damage honestly. It’s discordant but in an oddly pleasing way. With that said, I could definitely see certain listeners who aren’t into more unorthodox instrumentals thinking that this is trash. I love it though. I think it’s dope as hell. Track 5 is called WILDEST DREAMZ, and it features Slayton Dixon. I’ve enjoyed all the features I’ve ever heard from Slayton Dixon, so I should probably check out one of his albums. He killed this shit. He sounds like a less lackadaisical version of Curren$y in my opinion. His flow and rhymes are fire here. The second verse on this track from Blix was pretty good too. It’s not really that interesting lyrically, but his flow and delivery sounded good. I don’t really think the beat here is crazy or anything, but it’s definitely enjoyable. It serves its purpose as a nice backdrop for the verses well. It just sounds relatively conventional, especially as a follow up to the preceding track. The main appeal of this song is definitely Slayton’s verse for me. I think this shit is dope overall. It’s followed by SUMMERTIME MOONLIGHT, which features YUNGMORPHEUS. He’s an artist whose name I’ve seen floating around the internet a lot for the past couple years, and I think he has some of the coolest cover art I’ve ever seen. However, for some reason I’ve just never felt compelled to listen to his music. I think the name “YUNGMORPHEUS” was a turn-off for me if I’m being totally honest. Anyway, this was my first time actually ever hearing him rap, and I enjoyed his performance. It wasn’t a super amazing verse that has me scrambling to check out his discography, but it was sufficient for this track. I actually enjoyed Bloodblixing’s verse more personally. I think this is one of Blix’s best verses on the whole project. The beat on this song is also pretty fire. That’s probably my favorite aspect of the song. This might sound random, but I really wish I could hear Nas rap over this beat. He would sound amazing on this shit. This song really grew on me honestly. I liked it when I first heard it, but now I love it. I think it’s dope as hell. It’s followed by another highlight called GODSMACK – SECRET SCRIPTURES*, which features NODUO. This shit is fire. The production from Blix is superb, and Nonazz & no god. both sound awesome over it. When I heard no god.’s performance on Blank Thought’s my life flashed before me, I was a little turned off by his high-pitched voice. It’s grown on me a lot since then though. I think there’s a nice contrast between him and Nonazz’s voices. They both killed this shit. The final verse from Blix isn’t as great as the first couple verses, but it’s still enjoyable. This is definitely one of my favorite songs on the album. It’s followed by PAPA JOHNS, which might be the number one best song on the project. This shit is fire. It really grew on me a lot too. I thought it was cool the first time I heard it, but now I absolutely love it. Blix’s flow during this quatrain is one of my favorite parts of the song…

Baby, I hope that's me
Real nigga who you're supposed to be
Don't let these lames come close to me
Only real ones, they know it's me

That’s fire. The second verse on this track from LUNAR is what really pushes this shit to the next level for me though. I love his vocal delivery, and his flow is fire.

I bathe in the blood of my enemies
Don't make me cut off your extremities
I roll up an eighth of the remedy
Y'all ridin' the wave like anemones

I kinda had a nerdgasm the first time I heard this dude use the word “anemones” in a rhyme. I wish y’all could’ve seen my reaction to that. That shit’s fire. I love it. Again, this might be my favorite song on the album. It’s really grown on me a lot. I love both of the verses, and the beat is fire. I think the song’s dope as hell. Track 9 is called String Theory, and it features Sunmundi. I enjoyed the Midnight Oil album he dropped earlier this year, so it was exciting to see him featured here. This shit did’t disappoint at all. His verse is really fantastic, and definitely one of the best on the album in my opinion.

It's capital rapture with the fruit basket patch up
Flip the switch on a fire starter until my Earth and metal match up
The space age modern master
Every sage was once defined by her ignorance and then it passed her

The beat is really fire too. For whatever reason I feel like Jay Electronica would sound beautiful over this instrumental. That would be so good. The closing verse from Bloodblixing is solid, but definitely not as great as the first verse from Sunmundi. I enjoyed the song a lot overall though. It’s a dope track. Track 10 is called 1, 2, WIT 3 45.Z, and it features Planet Eerf. This song kinda reminds me of E.T. by Outkast. The beat has a similar vibe in my opinion. This one’s weirder though. This weird, jazzy instrumentation comes into the backrground after about 50 seconds and it’s kind of discordant, but it oddly works. I think this is one of the coolest beats on the album. The opening verse from Planet Eerf is pretty nice, and I actually really loved Bloodblixing’s verse a lot too. My favorite aspect of this track is definitely just the production though. Overall, I think this is another one of the best songs on the album. It really grew on me a lot. I love it. It’s followed by another highlight called DA EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (BOBA FETT). The song features an artist named King Author, and I’d never heard of him prior to listening to this album. However, he actually probably has my favorite verse on the album. He fucking slaughtered this shit. His flow and vocal delivery sound amazing.

The empire strike's back, life's snatched
Mind'll hijack Iraqi desert storm forecast time right where you guys at
If I snap so will your spine, payin' chiropract'
I'm attached to the higher ups avoidin' the flytraps
Off the grid, why provide that
Loopholes, it took the new quotes to do a life hack
Live nigga stats, monopolize strategies for war, exercise rap
Begin to drill like Chiraq, flag black and gold, Cyrax

The closing verse from Bloodblixing is pretty nice too. It’s really the King Author verse that makes this song stand out to me so much though. I also really like the kind of old school sounding production. The song’s dope as hell. Track 12 is called MONEY MAGNET, and it has another great feature from LUNAR. I really love the melodic production on this track. It sounds really pretty. I think this would’ve been another one of my favorite songs on the album if LUNAR had an even bigger presence here. He’s definitely my favorite part of the track. It’s not that Blix was bad on this song at all. It’s just that LUNAR stood out a lot. The song’s pretty great overall though. Track 13 is called 187, and it’s performed by Knowitall. He’s an artist whose name I’ve seen floating around Twitter a lot, but this was my first time actually ever hearing him rap. I’m definitely gonna check out the album he dropped with Barto100 though because he really impressed me here.

Stomp competition, they repetitive
My music in your head is like being fed medicine
I'm better than them, confident I'm better than Em
The pencil lead like your head to attend

I definitely misquoted that last line. I couldn’t really make out what was being said, but either way the bars are fire. Particularly the one about being better than Em. That’s one of my favorite lines on the album. The song is dope as hell overall. The penultimate track is called LOST MY LIFE BUT I FOUND IT, and it’s definitely my least favorite song on the album. I still like it overall, but I have some complaints. First of all, I just think the beat is a little too repetitive. It gets really old by the time the song ends. I really like the percussion a lot though. It’s just the melody that gets old. The opening verse from Slayton Dixon is really good, but I’m sadly not a fan of the hook from Blix at all. It’s just too simplistic and repetitive for me. Thankfully his actual verse is pretty good. I think the song’s tight overall. I just have some issues with it. I fuck with it though. The closing track is entitled MAY THE BRIDGES I BURN LIGHT THE WAY (BROKEN DREAMZ), and it features Iceberg Theory. Needless to say, his performance is superb. The first verse is fire.

I dream in Aramaic, but the pen sees Greek
Know my thoughts been elsewhere if my pen seems weak
The work became a virgin, just contemplative mystique
Gone clean, turn scriptures NC17

I’m unfortunately really not a fan of the manner in which Bloodblixing begins his verse. It sounds really bad to me. The rest of the verse is quite good though, so I definitely enjoyed his performance overall. The beat is pretty awesome too. I am a little ambivalent towards the sample on the hook. Something about the melody and the vocals just sounds a little lame to me. That’s a nitpick though. The song’s dope overall.

This album is pretty great. I really love the production here, although I have to say that I don’t find Bloodblixing’s other work to be less “avant garde” than this. He’s always had kind of an experimental edge. There are beats on NBA STREETZ GANGSTA EDITION that are weirder than some of the beats here in my opinion. Anyway, I mainly enjoyed this album for the production and features. I’m really not sure that I would enjoy a solo album from Bloodblixing without features. It’s possible though. He’s not a bad rapper, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t mostly come to his projects for the beats. The features on this project all did a really great job too. In fact, I don’t think there was a single feature that I didn’t like. Even artists I haven’t loved in the past ended up impressing me here. This is a really dope album. Give it a listen and let me know what you think in the comments below.
