This extended play was released on July 15th this year. It’s been kind of a while since I’ve covered a SeKwence project, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard one from him that I didn’t like. His Chameleon & Budget Cuts 3 albums are really good. I’m Better Than Everyone might be my favorite song from him. Check those albums out if you haven’t yet. Anyway, I loved the first entry in this WHAT THE HELL GOIN’ ON series, so when I saw that they released a second one I was pretty intrigued. I really fuck with Ruci’s production. Fun fact: one time I recorded a verse over a Ruci instrumental and posted it on Soundcloud. The mixing was terrible because it was basically a voice memo laid on top of the instrumental. I took that shit down since it sounded like shit, but I think it says a lot that I chose a Ruci instrumental to go over. Obviously I wouldn’t have done that if I wasn’t a fan. Anyway, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this project as much as the first one, but I kinda knew going into it that I would like it to some extent.
The project begins with CRUXIFIED, which has a really nice, chill, kind of jazzy beat. It’s very melodic and wavy. I guess that can be said about this project in general. SeKwence’s flow on this track is really nice, and he sounds mad comfortable over this production style.
This shit remind me of the times when we was coppin' dubs
A few connects for everything when we was shy for drugs
We tryna break this recreational shit, we tryna break this generational shit, these curses
Still be on me, we don't struggle in the same way, I still be workin' for the lowest wages, I don't deserve it
As I’ve said before about previous albums, SeKwence’s rhyme patterns are pretty unique to me. The rhymes always land kind of unpredictably. Like, the way he rhymed “curses” with “workin’” and “deserve it.” I didn’t even notice which words rhymed the first time I heard this song. I just knew the shit sounded good. Once I really focused on the lyricism I was able to discern more of the rhymes though. The hook is pretty straightforward, and it works really well. This is just a really chill song that is fire to smoke to. It makes me feel like I’m sitting on the beach watching a sunset. It’s really dope. The second track is called BITCH CLEAN THE RUG, and it’s even better in my opinion. I love SeKwence’s flow on this track. It’s really bouncy, and it gives me the coveted involuntary head nod every time I hear it. The beat on this track is pretty bouncy too. The bass that comes in around the forty second mark sounds fantastic. The piano loop is great as well. I honestly think that this song might have the best rapping from SeKwence on the whole project. I really love his performance here. This song honestly grows on me more and more every time I hear it. I think it’s dope as hell. Track 3 is an interlude called BARRY4PREZ, and it’s performed by Barry Marrow. I really like this one. I think the kind of spacey instrumental sounds like something Devin the Dude would rap over these days. Barry’s verse here is really nice too. It’s not a super lyrically dense track. The main appeal for me is just Barry’s flow and vocal delivery. He just sounds really good here.
Trippin' balls off of cow shit
Real runtz and you know it's the loudest
Fake runts, boy, I know you be smokin'
Real runtz, take a hit, and you chokin'
No blunts, pussy boy, I'm swingin'
Thought you knew, hope you know I'm a demon
Got your bitch in here, she creamin'
Ride the mic with my dick, she be singin'
This is another song that’s great to shmoke to. I think it’s dope. It’s followed by SELFISH. Once again, the beat is kinda spacey. I like how it has a lot of different elements that come in and out throughout the runtime of the track. For example, there’s a bass pattern that doesn’t come in until about forty seconds into the song. It feels like the beat is constantly building. The rapping is what really makes this song stand out for me though. The first verse from SeKwence is really good, and the hook is pretty nice too. There’s a guest verse from an artist named NoGum Hundo. I was previously unfamiliar with them, but they really stood out here.
So much I gotta see, I'm on a quest like The Odyssey, a better man is what I'm tryna be
And what I gotta be 'cause shit was lookin' so fucked up, it damn near could've been comedy
Again, it’s not that the lyrics are super technical or dense. It’s just that his flow and delivery sound really great. For whatever reason I was on the edge of me seat waiting to hear each line. I think he killed this shit. The song’s dope. The next track is called BAREKNUCKLES1000, and it’s honestly one of my favorite songs of the year. The beat sounds like a bouncier, less boring version of something DāM-FunK would do. It’s pretty nice. However, the main reason this song stands out so much to me is because of the hook honestly. That’s one of my favorite hooks of the year. As a stoner, this shit really resonated with me.
Break it, roll it, light it, smoke it
I ain't trippin', I'm goin' through motions
I ain't trippin', I'm fryin', I'm floatin'
I ain't touchin' no shit 'less it's potent
The opening verse from SeKwence is really great too. His flow was mad nice. This might actually be his best verse on the project. The guest verse from Norfside Shae is fantastic as well. Again, this is one of my favorite songs of the year. It’s interesting because I’d actually say this is my least favorite beat on the project. They really killed this shit though. The song’s dope as fuck. It’s followed by W.T.H.G.O. Outro, which is an instrumental track co-produced by Promise. It’s pretty awesome honestly. This might actually be my favorite beat on the project. I kinda wish SeKwence rapped over it, I can’t lie. It’s the kind of instrumental that’s good enough to enjoy without rapping though. I think it’s fire. The last track is a remix of SELFISH with a verse from Astral Trap instead of NoGum Hundo. This version is pretty much on par with the original. Astral Trap’s verse is great. It just gets better and better as it progresses. I don’t know which version of the song I prefer honestly. I feel like my preference would depend on my mood. Both versions are dope.
This EP is great. I feel like if you’re not into chill, laidback music that’s good to shmoke weed to then you may not appreciate it as much as me. This shit just sounds mad relaxing though. It’s the kinda music that I wanna get comfortable and chill out to. As always, SeKwence is a beast when it comes to beat selection, and all of the features came through with great performances. SeK’s flow is as sharp as ever, and the hooks here are good too. I really don’t have any consistent gripes with this EP. I liked every track, including the instrumental outro. This made me more excited to hear the upcoming album that SeKwence has been teasing. As a fan, I’m definitely satisfied with this follow up to the original entry in the series. In fact, I think this one is even better in all honesty. I hope we get a third one in the future because this shit is dope. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments below.
