Song Review | Cloud Envy – Star Trek

Cloud Envy released one of my favorite albums of 2021, so I was eagerly awaiting his return, and very curious to see how he would follow it up. Back to the Flows was honestly such a great album that I wasn’t sure if he’d be able to match its quality again, but the features and freestyles I’d heard from him since then definitely reignited my hope. When he finally dropped this latest single, I was super excited to give it a listen, and it did not disappoint me at all.

The song kinda has a dreamy instrumental. The loop sounds really shiny, but I wouldn’t say it sounds too clean or overproduced. It sounds like musical stardust. It helps that the bass is nice and hard-hitting too. The hook is really catchy as well. It’s cool to hear Cloud Envy experimenting with a more melodic approach, although I guess that’s not necessarily out of character for him. The main appeal of this song is just the actual verse for me though. He killed this shit. His flow is buttery smooth. He just sounds so good whenever he raps. His flow and voice are perfect. I really love this part of the song…

Road to get rich, GPS say we close
Now we in cruise control, a toast
To me, I deserve what I'm gettin', a dose
And she had me spinnin' the block
Outside, ain't no time for the talkin'
Locked in, all my brothers is solid
I splurge any time that I please
One verse, don't forget who it is
I had 'em rethinking from something I did on the regular
That be the truth and this girl is the messenger
How I do less and my more is still better, huh?

The way his vocal delivery kinda grows and gets more aggressive during this part sounds fucking awesome. Again, that’s my favorite part of the song. It really feels like the climax of the track to me. It’s so satisfying to listen to. I will say that the manner in which the verse ends is a little jarring, but it’s something I got used to after repeat listens. I also wanna make sure I mention the opening line of the verse. It’s very straightforward, but for whatever reason I just love the way he starts this shit.

Five in the morning in Brooklyn, I'm zooted

I don’t even know why that’s so hard to me. I love it though. This just makes me even more excited to see what Cloud Envy does next. Give this track a listen and let me know what you think in the comments below.
