Relix the UnderGod – Birdz | Song Review

Relix the UnderGod is an artist I’ve been familiar with ever since I was about 13 years old. I used to listen to his mashup tapes on Datpiff back in the early 2010s. I remember one in particular where he used a line from Rick Ross’ verse on I’m on One as the hook. I think the song was called Purple Flowers. That one was really dope. Oh man, the memories are coming back now. The floodgates have opened. My favorite one was called Yellow Starships. It was a mashup over an original beat featuring Wiz Khalifa, Rick Ross, Drake, and Cory Gunz.

Those features don’t sound super appealing these days, but ten years ago this was really enticing. It’s more fire than you would expect it to be too. If this was an actual song it’d be a hit. Or at least, it would have been when it first dropped. Drake easily had the worst verse, but Cory Gunz killed it. Most importantly, Relix’s production is fantastic. It’s a fire mashup.

I was still subscribed to Relix’s YouTube page all these years later, and I was pretty excited when I saw that he uploaded this new single on September 29th. I don’t really listen to mashups anymore, so I’m glad he just left this as an instrumental.

It’s fire. The dude’s still got it. In fact, if anything he’s only gotten better, which I guess is to be expected. Of course he’s more seasoned now, so it makes sense that his music has elevated in quality. The vocal sample here is fantastic, and I like the new “UNDER GOD” producer tag Relix has. It sounds like it was taken from someone reciting the pledge of allegiance, so that’s pretty cool. I think what really makes Relix’s production so good is his use of bass. His percussion just always sounds so good. It’s really hard to listen to this music without getting the coveted involuntary head nod. This beat just sounds like it would be really fun to rap over. I guess this would be considered a Trap beat because of the hi-hats. Most of the stuff I typically listen to and write about doesn’t sound like this, but I was way more into Trap around the time I listened to those aforementioned mashups. I love this beat though, and I would love to hear a really dope MC over it. It’s enjoyable even without vocals though. Check it out and let me know what you think of it in the comments below. I think it’s really dope.
