This song was released back in June this year if I’m not mistaken. 1crusafix is a Digicore artist from Ohio with whom I was totally unfamiliar a couple months ago. As many of you know, I have a strong aversion to all the Hyperpop music I’ve heard in the past. However, I never really gave the genre much of a chance in the first place. I heard Stupid Horse and decided that I was gonna steer clear of anything even remotely Hyperpop-related indefinitely. However, in the past few months I have become close friends with an artist named Salad Camera, who has been playing two specific artists damn near every time we hang out: 1crusafix and crusey. I’m slightly more familiar with the former, but I still know pretty much nothing about these guys. Anyway, the stuff they make seems to be a lot less disgusting than whatever the hell I heard a few years ago. I think the bridge for me is VEGA!. VEGA! is very different from most of the other stuff I listen to. I’ve been playing a shit ton of Gen3 around Salad Camera, and I guess he figured I would enjoy some 1crusafix because they’re kinda similar in some ways. A lot of the subject matter is similar. However, I get the sense that VEGA! is a bit more intentional with the humor in his music. 1crusafix doesn’t really make me laugh the way VEGA! does. A lot of the music Salad Camera has been playing for me kinda sounds like a bunch of variations of the exact same song too. I think VEGA!’s a bit more sonically diverse. With all that said, it should be noted that I’m only really scratching the surface of 1crusafix’s artistry. Anyway, on my 27th birthday, Salad Cam played this song, righteous, in the car, and I was like, “wait hold on this is actually kinda fye.”
So, the instrumental is produced by crusey and Advxrse, and it’s actually pretty solid. When it first started, I thought it sounded a lot like a Lex Luger beat, but it quickly sheds that vibe once the bass comes in. I like the beat, but 1crusafix himself is the star of the show for me. The melody of the introductory vocals is a little wack to me, but for whatever reason it just works over this instrumental really well. The hook though… The hook is easily the best part of this song. It’s so fun to sing along with. That melody is fire.
Whatchu got? Yeah, that's sumn light, trap in the north side
Catch him down, I got blood on my all whites
Yeah, that boy a deer in the headlight
Caught him up in traffic, then it's on sight
The first verse is performed by the featured artist, deepinparis. I have to say, this is kind of a lull in the song for me, but it’s not bad. It’s just not nearly as enjoyable as the other parts for me personally. I’m kind of indifferent towards it. One thing that did stand out to me about it was this line though…
Can't fit into these size twenty-six, then I'ma fast then
I was a little confused by this. When I was at Hofstra I used to smoke with this dude who made really bad Sigilcore music who was also bony as fuck. Is being anorexic part of Hyperpop culture? Is it rude for me to even ask that? Probably. Anyway, 1crusafix’s performance is cool—particularly the second part of his verse…
I don't give no fucks, I'm in love with blood
Let me get an ounce of that gas, it's not enough
Take a wood then face it, don't tell me that I bluff
Brodie drop location, we pull up wit' dem guns
It’s really about the melodies. This shit is an earworm. The lyrics have pretty much no impact on my enjoyment of the song. If I had heard this about ten or maybe even five years ago, I would’ve despised this shit. I’m a changed man though. I’m stronger and wiser than I was when this blog first started. I may or may not get into more of 1crusafix’s music. I noticed that he seems to be a singles artist only. We’re probably not getting an album any time soon. I would be curious to hear what a full project would sound like, but for now I’m chillin’ with this song. I think it’s dope.
