2026 is here, and we’re already getting fire music. This song came out on the very first day of the year, and I’m kinda surprised that it’s not getting more love. This shit is special. VULGAR is a newly formed duo comprised of the one and only Vic Spencer alongside an artist with whom I was previously unfamiliar named Mano. I’ll talk about the song itself in a bit, but first I just wanna talk about the artists. A quick perusal of the VULGAR YouTube page will inform you of the duo’s modus operandi. The entire thing seems to be a tribute to the late great MF DOOM. There’s a video entitled VULGAR LORE where they basically explain the idea behind the DOOM masks that they’re wearing in the music video below. Basically, they’re Doombots: members of MF DOOM’s robot army. When I learned the concept these guys are going for, I literally exclaimed out loud, “Holy fuck.” It’s so clever to me. I love it. Most importantly, the song itself is excellent.
I really love the juxtaposition this pair has going on. Mano’s soft, catchy sung vocals next to Vic Spencer’s super deep, attention grabbing rap voice is a winning combination. The melodic, piano-driven production is awesome too. The voice clip at the beginning of the track about “Why do they look like me?” adds to the lore as well. These motherfuckers are world-building, man. I fucking love it. And guess what the name of the upcoming album is? THE VILLAINS, VOL. 1. Fire. Anyway, both of the verses are performed by Vic, while Mano is in charge of the hook. I love the way Vic was flexing and talkin’ shit on this joint.
I wear shit you can't get, so it's pissin' you off
Tear rappers into shreds if they gettin' involved
You gonna wish you never fucked with me
Now I got all these rappers duckin' me
Run into they truck and flee, rappers lookin' ugly
Meanwhile me and Mano somewhere in the coupe puffin' weed
You still livin' luckily
I’m glad he didn’t try to bite DOOM’s rap style. There’s enough original flavor here to prevent it from feeling like a cheap knockoff. Anyway, when the credits roll we see that Vic’s alias for the group is Victor Von Spencer, while Mano is MANO VON DOOM. The instrumental is produced by Mano himself alongside someone named Ramz. One thing that I think is really cool is how mysterious the duo seems while still putting out just enough information for me to be able to write a thorough review. I think the music video is the only place to stream this song for now, but Vic doesn’t usually take long to release music, so I don’t think we’ll have to wait too long for THE VILLAINS. Musically, this is the most exciting thing to happen this year so far in my opinion. I’m really looking forward to hearing the album. I enjoy pretty much every Vic Spencer release I hear, but this is like another level of creativity from him. I can’t wait. Check the song out and let me know what you think in the comment section. Subscribe to VULGAR’s YouTube page too. At the moment I appear to be the only subscriber, which is crazy to me. I better not see any of those bullshit “it’s been a slow year for music so far” posts come February. Y’all stay sleepin’, but I’m here to ring the alarm. THE VILLAINS IS COMIN’!
