As I said during the conclusion of the last review, I don’t really consider myself a fan of 2Pac. Obviously I respect his cultural impact, but the music itself isn’t really that great to me. I like the majority of his albums, and I don’t think any of them are bad or even mediocre. There’s not a lot of range in terms of quality though, which I guess could be a good or bad thing depending on your perspective. He was very consistent. While he didn’t have any bad or mediocre albums, he also didn’t have any albums that I would personally call great. I’m also not a Jay-Z fan but if I had to choose one artist over the other, I’d go with him. Jay has albums that are far worse than my least favorite Pac album, but he also has albums that are way better in my opinion. I’d take 4:44 over all of Pac’s work combined. This is what I mean when I talk about the range of quality. The vicissitudes in Jay’s discography are more extreme. There’s not much fluctuation in the level of quality when it comes to Pac’s work in my opinion. Marc Lamont Hill recently stirred up some controversy by calling 2Pac the most overrated rapper of all time. I’m sure there are plenty of rappers who are far more overrated, but I understood where he was coming from. If you take away the cultural impact and context of every album, the music itself just doesn’t impress me that much. I’ve noticed that pretty much everyone from my generation that I talk to says that 2Pac is overrated. In fact, I actually like Pac more than most of the people from my generation that I speak to. I think he’s one of those artists whose work you won’t really appreciate in full unless you were there when it happened. I think I said something similar about Jay when I finished his marathon. So yeah, I don’t really consider myself a fan, but I do enjoy a good amount of Pac’s work, and I think he was a good artist. I’m just not head over heels in love with him like a lot of other Hip Hop fans are.
