If it isn’t clear by now, Mega Ran is easily my favorite Nerdcore rapper. Going through his catalogue led to some of the most fun I’ve had with music all year. It’s a shame that he’s been pigeon-holed into the whole Nerdcore thing because he’s not just some gimmicky nerd who likes video game soundtracks. This dude is a super talented artist who has an extensive discography featuring several non-Nerdcore releases. I think I said this in an earlier review, but I was shocked by how much I ended up enjoying his very first project. That was a really heartening and pleasant way to start this discography-binge. Until recently, the only song that’s ever made me cry is a song that I made myself, but I honestly started tearing up a little bit when I heard 306 by Mega Ran. There are so many amazing songs in these projects, and I encourage anyone who’s unfamiliar with Mega Ran’s work to check these shits out because it’s awesome. He’s a relatively big artist—I think he’s probably the most popular Nerdcore rapper—but he’s still criminally slept on in my opinion. It’s a tragedy that I wasn’t aware of his existence until this year. Dude is a beast. He’s also been super prolific over the years. He has not gone more than 12 months without releasing at least one project since 2006. That’s crazy when you really think about it. I’ve listened to approximately 50 projects from him, and I can count on one hand how many are actually wack to me. When he drops a project that I don’t like at all, it usually just comes down to the content. I have no interest in wrestling or the Netflix series Stranger Things, so some of this shit just didn’t appeal to me at all. However, the overwhelming majority of his work is very good to me. Stop sleeping on this dude. He’s awesome. Oh, by the way; why the FUCK has there not been a full length Writer’s Guild album? Man, they’ve seriously become one of my favorite groups. I just wish they dropped more music. They only ever do like one song every year. I’d personally be more excited about a Writer’s Guild album than a Black Hippy album or even a Slaughterhouse album to be honest. Those dudes are all amazing. Anyway, when I rate discographies like this, I usually split them up by format—mixtape, album, etc.—and by artist. However, Mega Ran’s released so much shit that it’ll just be easier for me to rate them in chronological order. It should also be noted that there are a select few projects that I haven’t heard. Aside from the one I just reviewed, I didn’t listen to any of the mixtapes. There were also some obscure releases which I was unable to locate unfortunately. I also chose to skip the remix projects. So yeah. 😀
