EP Review | Nems – Bamboo

This extended play was released on February 28th this year. Nems released one of my favorite albums of 2019 with Gorilla Monsoon, so I was pretty excited when he announced this EP. It’s only three tracks, but I’ll take whatever I can get from him because he’s a fucking beast on the mic. He also released a mixtape called Gorilla 2: Any Given Sunday last year, which I hadn’t heard until recently. I probably would’ve heard more discussion about it if it was an actual album. It’s dope though, so make sure you check it out if you haven’t yet. Anyway, I’m not expecting this to be as amazing as Gorilla Monsoon, but I know I’m gonna really fuck with it. I’m excited.

1. YKTFV produced by Vinny Idol

The beat here really caught me off guard. I typically don’t expect this sound from Vinny Idol, and I certainly wouldn’t ever expect Nems to spit over something like this either. I love it though; it’s awesome. It’s kind of an Electronic sounding beat that I’d expect someone like Mega Ran to rhyme over. Nems fucking killed that first verse too. As always, he just comes off as a total brute who’s super disrespectful and inconsiderate.

All we know is headshots, red dots, dead blocks
You lookin’ stupid like a white nigga with dreadlocks
They talk crazy on the ‘gram, and then the feds watch
I’ll run down on a agent and take a fed’s watch
Now they pushin’ for a case
I’ll wipe my ball sweat then mush you in the face

I knew what the acronym in the title stood for before I even listened to the song. I find it a little corny on paper, but it sounds fine when he says it in my opinion. I think the beat can get a little annoying after a while, but I don’t mind it too much. It’s really dope to me, and Nems killed both of his verses. This shit is dope as hell.

2. Hustle produced by DJ Skizz

I’m kinda torn on DJ Skizz’s production here to be honest. It’s just a bit too over the top for me. I like the percussion, but everything else about the beat is just really annoying to me honestly, especially those warbling synths. I like how aggressive Nems’ delivery is here though. It’s just hard to appreciate his lyricism when the annoying ass beat is so distracting. I think his performance here was fine, but it’s not one of those situations where a really great verse is ruined by a trash beat. I don’t feel like I’m missing out by deleting this track from my library. The song is honestly pretty mediocre to me overall. I’m never gonna listen to it again.

3. Dononomics produced by Saint Believ3

This beat is a lot smoother than what I would ever expect Nems to rap over. This is the kinda shit I typically associate with Rick Ross; in fact, there’s literally a sample of Rick Ross’ ad-lib that comes in during the hook. It’s a fine beat though. The first verse was pretty solid, although none of the lines really blew me away. Honestly, this is another song that I’m kinda torn on. I don’t think it’s bad at all, but this just isn’t really my style. I’m not a fan of those super smooth, lavish songs that Rick Ross always does. It’s just not really interesting to me at all. I don’t think anything about this song is particularly bad, but it’s just boring in my opinion. I’m never gonna listen to it again, but it’s an okay song.

I have to be honest… This was kinda disappointing. I really love the first song, but the other two tracks weren’t very enjoyable to me. None of these songs were expected at all though. This is completely unlike his latest solo album. All the beats are very different. There’s a lot of variety here. It’s cool that he kinda did something different and experimented with every track. I unfortunately just didn’t find them to be very entertaining. To me, Nems is at his best when he’s being a disrespectful chode. He only really did that on the opening song. I’m sure some people will fuck with the other two tracks, but they’re just not really my style. I don’t think this is a bad project at all. I was just expecting it to be great, and that didn’t end up being the case. It’s worth checking out if you’re a fan, but just don’t expect it to be on the same level as Gorilla Monsoon. I think it’s just decent.
