Don’t sleep on this latest album from Will Tesla. It was released on April 10th this year. I first became familiar with Will Tesla a year ago when he was featured on TreaZon’s album, I Shouldn’t Be Alive. He really impressed me with that feature, so when I was informed of this new album from him I was fairly certain that I would enjoy it. One thing I noticed about this album is that there are a lot of familiar video game samples. That was really cool. The opening track is entitled Betrayal, and it’s really dope. One of the first things I noticed is that Will Tesla’s voice reminds me of Ty Farris. That’s one comparison I couldn’t get out of my mind, so I guess that should give you an idea of what kind of an MC Will Tesla is. The dude is a fantastic lyricist. He killed the verse on Betrayal.
Ventriloquist nigga, I'm ready to snap
Shit is so fire, they runnin' it back
UAV when I'm killin' them, nigga
No wonder my city is up on the map
R.I.P. Nip, this a victory lap
Swear they be tryin', but can't fight the facts
Niggas be hatin', I got what they lack
This a new era, I'm not with the cap
His flow is really nice on this track. The song is dope. It’s followed by an even better track entitled Karma. I love the production on this track. It makes me think of winter for some reason. It sounds like audible snowfall. The beat is dope as fuck. Will killed the first verse too. I think his performance here is a big step up from that of Betrayal, which was already really good. I even like the melodic hook on this track. The second verse is performed by Dasanto, who I was also introduced to by the aforementioned TreaZon album. His flow really impressed me on this track. He was floating. The final verse is by an artist named One Ppl, who I was previously unfamiliar with. I really enjoyed his performance as well though. I really had a hard time deciding who had my favorite verse, and I’m still not totally confident in my answer. I ended up choosing Dasanto though. His flow was just too smooth. The song is five and a half minutes long, but it doesn’t feel too longwinded. I think it’s dope as hell. It’s followed by another highlight entitled Changes. The beat on this song from Quote the Producer is even better than that of the preceding track. This song has one of my favorite instrumentals on the whole album. It’s fantastic. Will killed this shit too.
Our immigration plan could use a couple polishes
But everything is polarized, I hate fuckin' politics
Conservative, republicans, liberals, moderates
All they make is empty promises and talk a lot of shit
So fuck 'em all, I'ma set that shit aside now
It's time to make a change to all that shit we like to cry 'bout
Promise I'ma ball even if I miss the tryouts
Stranded on a ocean, I'm just tryna find a lighthouse
The melodic hook is pretty nice as well. I don’t really have any complaints; I think the song is dope as hell. It’s followed by Forward, which I’m pretty sure samples something from the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack. I’m almost positive I’ve heard it in Super Smash Bros. Brawl before. I might be wrong about the game it’s from, but I know for a fact that it’s in a videogame. It makes for a really good beat though. I think the instrumental is fire. It sounds really bright and lighthearted. I think this track has some of the album’s best lyricism up to this point as well.
I'm on the edge, the fringes of this society
Politicians, they lied to me, officers keep they eye on me
Homies go and they die on me, look at the irony
I be longing for peace with weapons on the side of me
That second verse was cold as hell.
My skin tone was dangerous, had to take a major risk
Everything I write is my life, so fuck a plagiarist
God flow, I could make believers out of atheists
Eyes low, I swear the loud got me on that lazy shit
He fuckin’ killed this track. The song is dope as hell to me. The next highlight I wanna talk about is Press Start. This is easily one of the best tracks on the album. The production here is glorious, and the song has some of the best rapping on the whole project. Will did his thing on this track, but the real icing on the cake is the guest verse from TreaZon. This is one of the best features I’ve heard in 2021. This man fucking snapped.
Life on the edge
I'm so close, and yet I might take a step
I don't know, but now at nights I don't rest
And my heart so cold, I feel the ice on my flesh
He sounds so fuckin’ good over this beat, man. I love how fucking aggressive his flow is. Everything about his performance from his flow to his vocal delivery to his lyricism was on point to me.
Lookin' at my daughter, and I wonder how I did that
Never would've knew that someone had an impact
That effective, her and her mother so pure
Me, I'm the motherfuckin' mismatch
Havin' them is almost like a mishap
I don't feel worthy, always thinkin' someone tryna hurt me
Weaponry is always goin' click clack
Gotta keep it loaded, I done seen the paranoia been back
I love it. The song is dope af. It’s followed by another major highlight for me entitled Flowers. I know this track samples a videogame soundtrack, but I can’t for the life of me remember what game it’s from. I wanna say it’s Final Fantasy, but I’m probably wrong. It’s a gorgeous instrumental though. It’s easily one of my favorite beats on the album. I feel like this track has some of the album’s heaviest lyricism too.
Is it here to stay? Scratch my heart and tear away
Why the fuck T'Challa & the Mamba can't be here today?
Nipsey Hussle for a dollar, grindin' I ain't here to play
Year been full of trauma and it's gettin' hard to bear the weight
It’s another one of my favorite tracks on the album. I think it’s dope af. The next highlight for me is entitled Shinigami Flow. I like how this track has such an energetic beat, and I of course love the belligerent lyricism from Will.
Solo dolo when I'm on this road I gotta potent flow, my stepping stone is your totem pole System overload, they feelin' chills, I'm flowin' cold 16s could take any rapper, kill 'em, and turn 'em ghost These niggas dead if they in my scope Or they in my quotes or this shit I wrote No goin' back, so I'm careful when I make my notes Kickin' the chair on these rappers while they in my rope Now watch 'em hang, I laugh while I see 'em gasp for air Me, I never had it fair, so I never had a fear Gotta play it safe, so the magnum? Yeah I had a pair Twin revolvers like I'm Shalashaska up in Metal Gear
I think this track probably has my favorite performance from him on the whole album. He fucking spazzed here. The song is dope af. The title track, Chapter 2, features a very prominent Final Fantasy 7 sample, which is cool. As always, the rapping from Will is great.
I'm in the crib, pandemic got me trippin'
Reminiscin' on some better days before the social distance
While now I'm all alone, I think my sanity is driftin'
Water overflowin' and the dam been kinda rippin'
But, I hope it hold; like the current, I just pull my soul
On my toes, bell been ringin', never know for whom it tolls
People departin' on the daily, now coughin' kinda scary
And walkin' kinda eerie 'cause your city closed
This track in particular reminded me a lot of Mega Ran. I think it’s really good, even if it isn’t one of my favorite tracks on the album. The beat is cool, and the writing from Will is great. The song is dope. The closing track is a really lighthearted outro entitled Sticks & Stones. I love the vibrant, guitar-driven production from Ayeitscam. It’s a really joyful-sounding instrumental. The first verse from Will is great, and I like the way Q-Flo comes in right behind him. I’d never heard of him before, but I’m pretty sure he’s a Christian rapper just because he mentioned it towards the end of his verse. He did a great job though. His flow and rhymes were real nice. The song is dope. I fuck with it, and I think it’s a good way to close the project.
This album is even better than I was expecting it to be. I honestly think it’s one of the better projects I’ve heard in 2021. Will Tesla proved himself to be not only a competent lyricist, but a dope songwriter. It really just comes down to the production and rhymes just being really good. This isn’t some super creative, experimental concept album. It’s just a guy who’s really good at rapping making fun songs over some great production. I do think it’s cool how he sampled a bunch of video game soundtracks for these beats. That’s why I feel like Will Tesla is like Ty Farris mixed with Mega Ran. I’m a big fan of both of those artists, so I mean that in the best way possible. This shit is dope as hell. Don’t sleep on it.
