Album Review | Bloodblixing – HOW THE BLIX STOLE CHRISTMAS: GANGSTA EDITION

This album was released on December 24th this year. I was really looking forward to hearing this album because I love the cover art, and there are a lot of features from artists I really fuck with. I knew the mixing would be ass, but I really fuck with Bloodblixing‘s production, so I was still excited to give this a listen. The entire project is self produced.

The album begins with a song entitled #FREESMOKE, which features an artist with whom I was previously unfamiliar named O Dawg. I really love the instrumental on this track, and O Dawg sounded pretty good on the first verse. It wasn’t a show-stealing performance or anything, but I definitely enjoyed it. What really makes this song stand out to me is the way the beat switches up after his verse. The second part of this beat is pretty awesome. Blix sounds pretty nice over it too. His flow isn’t super flashy or anything, but his loud ass delivery sounds really good. It’s a dope song. The following track is called SPIRITZ IZ HIGH (THE DOUGH), and I was really looking forward to this one because it features Lync Lone, of whom I’ve become a really big fan. The instrumental on this track is excellent, and I enjoyed the opening verse from Bloodblixing.

I'm a main character, everyone is extra
Wish papa was still around to give me lectures
A diamond on the ground, it surpass the pressure
My clothes is real fly, you can feel the texture
Your style is augmented, my shit is authentic
When I sit down with these clowns I'm all in it

The lyricism isn’t super creative or unique, but his delivery and flow sound pretty nice. I fuck with the hook on this track, and Lync killed the second verse. I love his melodic delivery, and his flow is as smooth as ever.

Fly as bird shit, you wanna be fly? You gotta earn it
I supply and compromise with the guys who runnin' the circus
Peep the verses, you gon' pick a side or read the verdict
I glide high and submerge, I'm never stuck to the surface

The bad mixing kinda makes it hard to understand what’s being said sometimes, so I may have misquoted some of those lines. I don’t think he said “peep the verses.” However, as you can see, he was rhyming really well. The song’s dope. I like it even more than the preceding track. Track 3 is called BLING BLING, and it features Teller Bank$. Teller killed this shit, but I was slightly disappointed in the production. The primary loop is really awesome, but the drums don’t hit as hard as I expected or wanted them to. I was really excited when the song started because I thought this shit was gonna bang hard as hell, but I was let down by the percussion. Maybe if the mixing was better it would sound better. I don’t know. It’s still a really dope song though. The rapping is great. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t dislike the beat at all. It’s just not as fire as I was expecting it to be when it first started. The song’s dope though. I fuck with it. Track 4 is called COKE WHITE + SNOW*, and it features Nonazz. I wasn’t really into Nonazz’s flow that much on the opening verse sadly. I probably would’ve appreciated his performance more if the mixing wasn’t so bad; like I mentioned before, the quality of the mixing makes it pretty hard to hear what’s actually being said. I definitely preferred Blix’s verse.

Stuck in a cocoon, now I'm a butterfly
G's, I'll see you soon when I let butter fly
As a youngin' always had blind faith
Originality matters, this always helps my case

This is a cool song, but nothing about it really blows me away. I definitely like it to some extent, but it’s far from a highlight on this record for me. Track 5 is called BBALL ON CHRISTMAS DAY, and it features an artist named Patty Honcho. The only project I’ve heard from Patty is called The Blaxploitation, and I didn’t really care for it personally, but it was more because of the production than his rapping. I think he’s a really talented MC. His verses on this track were pretty good. I really like the beat on this track too. The bass sounds ridiculous just because of how bad the mixing is, but I like the beat overall. Personally, I think Bloodblixing had the more entertaining performance on this track.

Hunger inspired me to pick up a gun
In Rock, Paper, Shoot, man, I always won
I stand tall to Goliath, I don't ever run
My pillow talk to a Delilah, then murder your son
I know dimes who was nickel squeezin'
Made it feel like 4th of July, but 'tis the season
Laid down the foundation and built it by brick
Past folks been hatin', your friends will always switch

I think the reason I preferred his verse so much is because his voice is better in my opinion, and I like the part of the beat that he rapped over more. I really enjoyed this track a lot though. I think it’s dope. Track 6 is called HOW-TO-ROB-ON-CHRISTMAS 101, and I was honestly dreading listening to this one because it features BlaQ Chidori. The only project I’ve heard from him was OffTop 3, but I really hated it. However, he’s thankfully not rapping on this track at all. This is just an interlude in which he talks about the history of Christmas and gives instructions on how to rob people for the holidays. I definitely enjoyed this track more than I expected to, but it’s not the kinda thing I would ever listen to more than once. It’s a solid interlude though. Track 7 is a highlight entitled RED DOT ON YA NOSE LIKE RUDOLPH, and it features 2 Dolla Will & Yung Regis. Bloodblixing killed the first verse.

Let's open the floodgates
One of them niggas who love hate
But I also hate love
3, 2, 1, I'ma take off

His flow and delivery sound really nice. I love the beat here too. This is definitely one of the hardest instrumentals on the record. The way it switches up for 2 Dolla Will’s performance is fire, and he sounds awesome here. I love how energetic and aggressive his delivery is.

Merry Blixmas, all I want is bales of hairy spinach
Saint Nicholas chompin' cookies, sippin' dairy with it
Your naked sister under the mistletoe with a spliff to smoke waitin' for William
Blicky Boyz, you know we stay countin' the days 'til Christmas
I got a sleigh with reindeer and like 80 midgets
That make gifts for every holiday wishlist

I saw someone on Twitter say that this is a cool project, but that it doesn’t feel like Christmas. It’s true that the production isn’t super festive or anything, but a lot of the lyrics are Christmas-themed, so I have to disagree. This 2 Dolla Will verse is definitely the most Christmas-themed part of the whole album. I love it. Lyrically, I think he had the most entertaining performance on this track. However, from a technical standpoint, Yung Regis probably had the best verse. This is honestly my favorite song on the album. I think it’s dope as hell. Track 8 is called COUNTIN’ CASKETS, and it features Pro Zay. His flow on the first verse is really nice, and I think he sounds great over this beat. As always, his vocal delivery sounds super menacing and gravely. I really like the way the beat switches up for Blix’s verse. His flow is excellent, but I can’t say I agree with his decision to lather his vocals in autotune. It’s not something that ruins the verse for me though. The poor mixing didn’t really bother me as much on this track because I feel like Pro Zay & Blix’s vocal deliveries are loud enough to overpower the bass. It’s a really dope song. The following track is called 12AM IN THE NORTH POLE, and it’s technically a solo track, although it does have some uncredited narration from LUNAR. This track definitely has one of my favorite beats on the album, and I appreciate the relatively personal, thoughtful lyricism.

Life is a uphill steep, I got brothers who still in the street
My cousin doin' life, if I was dead then it would've been me
My name, I gotta keep it discrete
They dissin' on the kid, this shit is interesting
On the beach, sand between my feet, just reflecting
It's goin' up in each direction, it's goin' all ways in this intersection

I like how the instrumental switches up after about 70 seconds, although I definitely prefer the first part of the beat. Out of all the tracks on the album, this one probably has the best rapping performance from Blix. He really went in here. I found the speech from LUNAR pretty entertaining. I guess he kinda explained why he doesn’t rap on this project. He hates Christmas. I can’t say I relate, but I understand. Anyway, this song really grew on me honestly. I liked it the first time I heard it, but not as much as I do now. It’s a dope track, and it transitions into the following song, SANDBRIDGE BEACH, VIRGINIA, really well. I absolutely love the beat on this track. It’s really hard-hitting. The Jeezy ad-libs sound amazing too. I love how he included that. Along with the preceding track, these are two of the best solo songs I’ve ever heard from Bloodblixing. I love this couplet…

She bendin' over backwards
Get her as licked like a backwoods

I also liked how he had a line about ordering a BLT sandwich from Panera Bread in the second verse. The hook on this track is really nice too. I think I’d enjoy this track even more if the mixing was better, but it’s still really dope to me as it is. The following track is called PRESENTS UNDER DA TREE (CAN’T BAN BLOODBLIX) and it features Matt Mars. I wasn’t really looking forward to hearing his verse because my opinion of him soured when he threw a temper tantrum in my DM’s over me rating his album a 3 out of 5 on RateYourMusic, but I can’t front here; his verse was really great. That might actually be my favorite verse that I’ve ever heard from him. His flow was really nice. The line about wanting to be hooked up to a weed IV was pretty funny. The beat on this track is cool, but it’s far from a highlight for me on this record. I definitely like it to some extent though. Same goes for the second verse from Bloodblixing. Overall, this is a pretty good song. The penultimate track is called HEDGE FUND MAZE, and it features an excellent verse from Sleep Sinatra.

I'm thought proverbial
This what it sounds like when God murder you
Scratch serials, crash servers, I jam vertical
Had this bitch jumpin' like a sermon
Catch the Holy Ghost, and now your spirit ain't returnin'
What's mere vermin to men of myth?
How I'm buildin' I'm a megalith
Steady my hands, I'm tryna dead some shit
This is like if the Heaven's flipped and emptied clips
Reminisce back on my mortal days, I was wreckin' it

He killed it. I love how Bloodblixing told ReviewTechUSA to suck his dick for talking shit about him. That’s gotta be one of the most random rivalries ever. I love it though. I used to watch ReviewTechUSA’s videos back when I was like 13 years old and really into video games. I think he’s kind of an idiot in hindsight though. He’s said a lot of dumb shit. Anyway, this song is really dope. I fuck with it. The closing track is called LAST CHRISTMAS, and it’s another solo track. I love the kind of somber production on this track. This is definitely the most introspective song I’ve ever heard from Bloodblixing.

My mother was a good parent, but sometimes she didn't wanna be apparently
I know George Speckum is looking down on me probably
His spirit follow me, remember my childhood in fragments
PTSD is everlasting, my motivation come from negative comments
While my beats is loud, and the rhymes alarming
Awkward child, far from charmin'
Rough as gristle, far from Charmin

This is definitely my favorite solo track I’ve ever heard from Blix. I’ve never heard anything this personal from him before. This was very unexpected for me. The track honestly grew on me even more with repeated listens. It’s definitely one of my favorites on the album. I think it’s dope as hell.

This album is really good. There’s not a single song here that I don’t like. It was nice to get some more personal content from Bloodblixing on the solo tracks. I feel like I enjoyed his rapping a lot more on this album than I usually do. The beats are all pretty good, and most of the features were pretty entertaining as well. I will say that the poor mixing is starting to get a bit tiresome. As much as I think it gives Bloodblixing’s music a recognizable style, I have to admit that I think I would enjoy it more if it was mixed properly. I think Bloodblixing is a unique enough rapper to not need to rely on poor mixing to make his music stand out. It’s not a big enough issue to ruin the music for me though. I fuck with this album. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments below. I think it’s dope.
