My friend Skyler wrote this pretty awesome blog post about Stevie Wonder about half a decade ago, but I didn’t stumble upon it until a day or two ago. Personally, if somebody asked me right now who the greatest musician of all time is, Stevie is definitely the first person who would pop into my head. I actually don’t know if contemplating it any further would produce a different answer. Skyler pretty much nailed why I am so in awe of him. I was considering just tweeting the link to this post with a 🎯 emoji, but then I remembered that WordPress has a “Press This” feature where I can just repost it to my actual blog. I really think this deserves as many eyes as possible because it’s an important perspective to which too many people aren’t privy. This statement in particular was the main thing I felt…
“[Stevie Wonder is] somebody I always admired for being disabled and finding a way to do everything he loved, and maintaining a positive spirit. But his is a unique form of positivity that didn’t feel like it was blind to his own struggles and those of the world, and was instead one that acknowledged them and fought them while being someone with a communal spirit who wanted the world to be better.”

That’s really a big factor in why Stevie is such a lovable presence in the world to me. He’s on that Bob Marley shit. He seems very spiritually, mentally, and emotionally robust. When I hear his work, I hear someone who loves music, and is elated to be able to engage in the medium. He just sounds like someone who really puts his heart into his work. There’s an undeniable sense of joy and serenity permeating his output.
My personal favorite Stevie Wonder album is Innervisions, but my favorite song by him is on an album I actually don’t really like that much as a whole. It’s undeniably a classic record, and I definitely don’t think it’s anywhere near bad. It’s very well crafted, but the songs just aren’t really the type of thing I would want to listen to more than once for personal enjoyment. The album I’m referring to is Talking Book, which came out in 1972. My favorite song by him is the only one I really liked on the album, I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever), which is the closer.
I don’t even really have much to say about the song itself because when you listen it kinda goes without saying. That chorus is just beautiful. I genuinely sing that shit out loud to myself probably every single day of my life. At the very least once a week. It’s gold. Anyway, if you clicked on this blog post and read all the way to this point, and you haven’t or aren’t going to read the blog post I linked from Skyler, I’m mad at you. That was the whole point of this shit bro. Check that shit out, and follow him. ✌🏽
