Album Review | Styles P – Dime Bag

This album was released on November 2nd. This is the second album Styles P has released this year. It’s the third one if you count the collaborative album he did with Dave East. This’ll be one of the only albums I’ve ever listened to from him. The last project of his that I checked out was 2013’s Float with Scram Jones, but that was so long ago that I don’t even remember how I felt about it. I don’t know how I’m gonna feel about this project. I’m rarely blown away by a Styles P song. I think he’s a good rapper, but a lot of the songs he makes just aren’t that good to me. I’m gonna try to keep an open mind though. I’m sure this won’t be wack. I unfortunately don’t have the production credits for every single song, so you’ll have to forgive me for that.

1. War N Peace produced by Black Saun

The beat on this track is really dope. I just listened to this entire song. It’s pretty good. Like I said, the beat is dope, and the two verses are good too. I even like the hook. There’s not really a single aspect of this track that I dislike. I think this is a really good way to start the album. I really don’t have much to say about this track. It’s just a good song. I don’t have any complaints. This shit is dope to me.

2. Never Fight an African produced by J Rhodes

This track has a really weird beat. I’m not really feelin’ it to be honest. The first verse from Styles P was cool though. I’m not really crazy about the hook. It’s a vocal sample. I’m not sure what language that is from whoever’s singing. It doesn’t really sound that bad, but I didn’t enjoy it that much. The second verse wasn’t bad. The third verse was cool. This is an alright song I guess. I just wasn’t really feelin’ the production. Styles’ rapping isn’t bad though. I won’t be coming back to this song, but I think it’s decent.

3. Time Machine

The piano driven beat on this song is really good. The first verse from Styles P was pretty good. There’s an uncredited male vocalist on the hook. He sang pretty well. I like the hook. The second verse is dope. The third verse was good too. I feel like I haven’t heard a song with three full verses in forever. This is a good song. It didn’t blow me away, but there’s not really anything I dislike about it. Styles P rapped well, the beat is good, and I even like the sung hook. This is dope.

4. Couple Dollars produced by Dayzel

The beat on this track is really dope. The hook from Styles P is nothing special, but it works. The first verse is pretty dope. The second verse was cool too. The more I listen to this song the less I like the hook. I don’t know what it is about the hook I dislike so much. It’s just kind of annoying to me. The third verse was pretty dope. I think this is a good song. It’s definitely not one of my favorite tracks so far, but I enjoyed it. It’s dope.

5. Out the Way produced by Vinny Idol

The beat on this song is decent. I just listened to this entire song. It’s okay I guess. The verses are all pretty solid, and the hook’s not bad. It’s just not that interesting of a song. The repetitive beat gets old quick, and none of the lines are really that quotable to me. It’s kind of a boring song. I wouldn’t actually call this bad, but I don’t really think it’s good at all. This song did nothing for me. I won’t be coming back to it.

6. Money & Checks

The beat on this song is pretty nice. I just listened to this entire track, and I don’t really have anything to say about it. The three verses are pretty solid, and the hook is fine. That’s it. Nothing about this song stands out as being particularly great. It’s definitely not a must-listen song. I enjoyed it though. The production is cool, and the verses are good. Sometimes that’s all it takes for me to enjoy a song. This shit is dope.

7. Life Then Death produced by Poobs

I love the dark production on this track. The first verse is pretty solid. The rapped hook is nothing special, but it works. Huh… The more I listen to this song the less I like the production. It actually sounds kinda cheap. It’s a bit too repetitive for me. I like how dark it is though. The verses on this song are hard as hell.

I’m old school but I’m so cruel
Plant-based, but I will fry your face like it’s tofu

That’s the hardest line in the song to me. This is definitely one of the best songs on the album so far. It’s dope.

8. Marie Antoinette

The beat on this track is nice. The first verse is cool. There’s not really a hook on this song. There’s just a break between each verse. I like the way this track is structured. All three of the verses are pretty good. I don’t really have much to say about this track. There’s not really anything that I disliked about it. The beat’s cool, and the verses are all dope. This is a good song. It’s not gonna blow anyone away, but I don’t have any issues with it. This is dope.

9. Lottery Games

The beat on this song is okay I guess. The first verse was cool. The hook’s nothing special. The second verse was fine. I’m gonna be honest; this song didn’t really do it for me. Nothing about it really stands out in a positive way. The verses were fine, and the production’s not particularly bad. It’s just not that good. This shit is really bland. It’s a really underwhelming song. I won’t be listening to this again.

10. Self Made produced by Vinny Idol

Ehhh… This beat is kinda flat to me. The first verse isn’t bad, but he didn’t really say anything that stuck with me. It’s just okay to me. I feel the same way about the second verse. It’s just fine. The hook is nothing special. The final verse was fine. This is another pretty underwhelming song to me. It’s not bad, but nothing about it stands out in a positive way. It’s kind of a boring song. I won’t be returning to this one. It’s decent though.

This is a pretty solid album. You pretty much know what to expect from the entire album after hearing the first track. If you don’t like traditional Hip Hop you won’t like this album at all. The songs are all structured the same way. Most of the songs have three verses and a rapped hook. The production is nothing special, but it gets the job done. There’s really nothing special about this album. It’s just a standard rap album. I think it’s pretty well done. None of the songs are bad. Some of them just aren’t very good. Overall this is a good album though. It’s not gonna blow anyone away. It’s a solid listen though. I enjoyed it.
